Why a regional eSIM adds up on a multi-country trip
Trips in the Middle East are rarely single-country trips. The classic Gulf loop runs from Dubai via Abu Dhabi to Doha, Manama and Muscat. The Levant route starts in Amman, takes in Petra and Wadi Rum and then crosses the border into Israel. And for a great many travellers Turkey is not a destination at all but the connecting point on the way to the Gulf or on to the Caucasus, to Yerevan and Baku — a stopover in Istanbul, a night or two long.
With single-country eSIMs you buy four or five separate plans on a route like that. Each has its own minimum allowance and its own start date. Two days in Bahrain do not need a full plan, yet you have to take one anyway, and the remainder expires unused at the end. That is exactly where the difference comes from: a regional plan puts everything into one pot that you actually finish, instead of five pots of which four stay half full.
On top of that comes the effort no price list shows you. A local SIM means, at every airport: find the shop, show your passport, wait for the registration, pay. The Middle East eSIM is already set up before you reach the gate, and at the next border you do nothing at all.
What to know before you book
First, coverage away from the cities. In the mountains of Oman, in Wadi Rum, in eastern Anatolia, on the mountain passes of Armenia and in the desert between the Gulf states it gets thin. Dead spots exist there on every network, local card included. Download the maps for your route offline beforehand and it stops being an issue.
Second, the plan has no phone number. SMS verification codes will not arrive — and practically every regional app, from Careem to Talabat to Yandex Go, asks for one of those codes at sign-up. Set the accounts up before you leave, while your own card is still in the phone, and that is handled.
Third, in the United Arab Emirates voice and video calls over WhatsApp and FaceTime are usually blocked. That is a rule of the country and it affects hotel WiFi and local SIM cards just the same. Chatting works normally; for calls you need an app licensed there.
And fourth, the allowances: you can choose between 1 and 5 GB, valid for 7 to 30 days. For maps, messages, taxi apps and bookings even the small plan is generous. For daily video streaming, or a laptop hanging off the hotspot for two weeks, take the 5 GB plan and count on the hotel WiFi as well.
このeSIMがカバーしないもの
「中東」と聞くとエジプトも含まれると思われがちですが、エジプトは対象外です。レバノン、イラク、イラン、シリア、キプロスも含まれません。カイロ、ルクソール、フルガダには別のeSIMが必要です。コーカサスではもうひとつ大事な点があります。アルメニアとアゼルバイジャンは対象ですが、ジョージアは含まれません。コーカサス周遊のほぼすべてでトビリシが3か所目の滞在地になるだけに、ここがいちばん痛い抜けです。
ルートそのものについても正直にお伝えします。アルメニアとアゼルバイジャンの間、そしてアルメニアとトルコの間の陸路国境は、現在閉鎖されています。これらの国の間を移動するには空路か、まさにこのeSIMが対象としていないジョージア経由しかありません。eSIM自体は両国で問題なく使えます。問題はネットワークではなく国境です。
