Why a regional eSIM pays off on a round trip
Hardly anyone flies to South America to stay in a single country. The classic routes cross borders: Lima, Cusco, La Paz and on into the Atacama. Bogotá, Quito, Guayaquil. Rio, Iguazú, Buenos Aires, Montevideo. Or, in Central America, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama in a matter of weeks.
Roaming on your contract from home is expensive on a route like this and hard to keep track of: different terms in every country and daily charges that only show up on the bill. With a card bought in each country you pay for that route several times over. Every time: the queue at the counter, showing your passport, a minimum amount you never quite use up, and a sales conversation in a language you may not speak. After the third border you have paid three basic fees and left three lots of credit behind.
This eSIM is prepaid and paid for once: 1 to 5 GB, 7 to 30 days, and it keeps running in all 20 countries. The real gain is not the price, though, it is the timing. You are online exactly when it counts: at the bus terminal at six in the morning, at the border when someone asks for your accommodation's address, and at the taxi rank where you would rather check the map yourself.
Where coverage gets thin
In the cities and along the main routes you will barely notice a difference from home. Away from them, the region is simply very empty, and you should plan for that: on the Bolivian Altiplano and the Salar de Uyuni, in the Atacama, on the trekking routes towards Machu Picchu, in Patagonia along the Ruta 40 and the Carretera Austral, in Torres del Paine, and on the river routes and jungle lodges of the Amazon in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador.
Long-distance buses are their own case. On a fifteen-hour overnight ride the signal comes and goes with every village, and between them there is often nothing for a long stretch.
The remedy is always the same and it is worth the ten minutes: while you still have Wi-Fi, download the offline map of the region in Google Maps or Organic Maps, save your tickets and booking confirmations as files rather than as links, and download the offline language pack for Spanish and Portuguese in your translation app. Then a gap in coverage costs you a chat message, not your connection.
What is not covered
The name of the region is bigger than the country list. Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana are not included, so if your route goes there you will need something else for that stretch. In Central America, Belize and Mexico are missing too, and in the Caribbean so are Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, among others.
On the divided island of St. Martin, only the French north is on the list, meaning Saint Martin. The Dutch south, Sint Maarten, is not listed, and that is where the island's main airport, Princess Juliana, sits. Keep that in mind if you arrive or connect on that side.

Nearly every one of these apps sends a code by SMS when you sign up. This eSIM is a pure data plan without its own phone number, so that code always goes to your number from home. The easiest approach is to install WhatsApp, Uber, Cabify, DiDi and, in Brazil, 99 before you fly and log in while you are still on your usual network. Once you are travelling they run normally on your eSIM data. One thing that surprises many travellers: the region's payment apps almost always require a local tax number and a local bank account, Pix in Brazil for instance a CPF. Carry cash for taxis, markets and small shops, and use your credit card for restaurants and hotels.
Rappi
The Colombian delivery and everyday app: food, groceries, pharmacy, and often the fastest way to get something at night. Within the covered region, widely used in Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
Signing up needs a code by SMS, which arrives on your number from home, not on this eSIM. The in-app payment wallet asks for local ID and bank details, so pay with your own credit card or cash at the door instead.
PedidosYa
The delivery service across the southern countries and Central America – food, groceries, corner shop. Within the covered region, strong in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
The confirmation code also arrives by SMS on your home number. You need a delivery address in the country: give the full name of your accommodation, otherwise the driver will not find you.
99
Brazil's own ride app, available in many cities across the country. Paying the driver in cash is possible.
It only works in Brazil, so you will need a different app in the other countries of the region. Registration needs an SMS code, and some payment methods ask for a Brazilian tax number (CPF) that travellers usually do not have.
inDrive
A ride app where you suggest your own price and the driver accepts or counters. It is widely used in many cities in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Guatemala, and paying cash is normal.
Sign-up uses an SMS code sent to your home number. The haggling happens in Spanish, so type your destination and price into the app rather than sorting it out by phone.
Mercado Libre and Mercado Pago
The region's big online marketplace, and with Mercado Pago you pay by QR code in many shops, kiosks and taxis.
The payment wallet needs a local tax number (CPF in Brazil, DNI in Argentina, RUT in Chile) and usually a local bank account, so as a traveller you generally cannot get in. The marketplace only delivers to an address inside the country.
The usual channel across the whole region: hostels, drivers, tour operators and restaurants take enquiries almost exclusively this way. It runs entirely on your eSIM data.
Your WhatsApp number stays the one from home. If you ever have to sign in again while travelling, the code arrives by SMS on exactly that number, so log in before you fly and keep your home SIM in the phone.
