When a regional plan beats a single-country eSIM
A typical Southeast Asia loop is rarely one country. Bangkok, then a night bus into Cambodia, on to Vietnam, and a few days in Singapore or Bali at the end — that is four borders in three weeks. With country eSIMs you buy a separate package for each of them.
That costs you twice. First, you pay for a full package every time, even if you only spend five days in that country. Whatever you do not use is gone when you move on, and across four countries that quickly adds up to several unused gigabytes. Second, it costs time and patience: order, install, switch over, and always exactly when you are tired at a border crossing and need a taxi.
A regional plan turns that around. One allowance between 1 and 50 GB that you spread freely across the trip: a lot in Vietnam, barely any in Singapore, it makes no difference. The rule of thumb is simple — from two countries you save yourself the extra purchases and the switching, and from three the effort of separate country eSIMs really adds up. If instead you are spending three weeks only in Bali, a pure Indonesia eSIM is the better pick.
Where coverage gets thinner
The important part first: Southeast Asia has eleven countries and this plan covers seven of them. Laos, Myanmar, Brunei and Timor-Leste are not included. That hits the classic backpacker route in particular, because Laos sits right between Thailand and Vietnam. If you travel via Luang Prabang or the slow boat, you will have no service there and need a separate solution for that leg. As soon as you are back in one of the seven countries, the eSIM reconnects on its own.
Within those seven countries: cities, major arrival airports such as Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok, Changi in Singapore and Ngurah Rai on Bali, beach towns and tourist areas are well served. It gets thinner where locals also have weak reception — on smaller islands in eastern Indonesia and in the Philippine provinces, in the Vietnamese highlands, inland in Cambodia, and while trekking in northern Thailand.
And one detail that surprises many people: on longer island ferry crossings the network often drops out completely, sometimes for hours. Download maps, tickets and addresses offline before you board. The same goes for night buses through the border regions near Laos and for the crossings in southern Thailand and the Philippines.
