Set it up at home
Buy the eSIM on Wi-Fi and install it from the link or QR code in the email. Nothing is running down yet — the clock starts only when the eSIM first connects to an Icelandic network.
Switch it on after landing
Nearly all international flights arrive at Keflavík (KEF), about 50 km from Reykjavík; a few routes land at Akureyri (AEY) in the north, and domestic flights use Reykjavík (RKV). Turn off airplane mode and switch on data roaming for the Simbye line — you should be online within a minute or two.
Check it and drive off
Set the Simbye line as your default for mobile data and keep your usual number active for calls and texts. Download offline maps, weather and road conditions while you still have a signal, before heading for the highlands or the Westfjords.

Your eSIM is registered with two Icelandic networks: Síminn and Vodafone Iceland. Your phone decides which one you get — it picks the stronger signal wherever you are and switches back and forth as you drive. There is nothing to set up and no access point to type in; just switch on data roaming for the Simbye line. If you see bars but nothing loads, turn off automatic network selection in your settings and pick the other network by hand.
Iceland is an inhabited ring around an empty interior, and the networks follow the people. Along the Ring Road (Route 1) and in the towns, coverage is solid: Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Reykjanesbær and Keflavík Airport, Selfoss, Hveragerði, Vík í Mýrdal, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri and Húsavík. The routes most people drive are covered too: the Golden Circle with Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, the south coast with Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It thins out in the Westfjords around Ísafjörður, in narrow side valleys of the Eastfjords, inside some road tunnels and above all in the highlands: on the F-roads to Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk and Askja, and on the Kjölur and Sprengisandur crossings, no signal is the norm. Download maps, your route and your bookings before you leave the coast.

Why roaming on your home contract gets awkward in Iceland
Iceland is a country you drive through rather than sit still in: the Ring Road, the Golden Circle, the south coast, Snæfellsnes. Navigation, weather checks, road-condition pages, webcams and uploaded photos add up faster than most people expect. What your carrier charges for data abroad usually shows up afterwards on the bill — or there is a cap you only learn about once you hit it, and that tends to happen exactly where you need the map.
This eSIM turns that around. It is prepaid: you buy the data before you fly, you cannot spend more than you bought, and there is no contract and no registration. You can install it calmly at home days in advance, because the validity only starts when the eSIM first connects to an Icelandic network. Plans run from 1 to 20 GB, plus unlimited options, over 7 to 30 days — enough for a long weekend or for the whole Ring Road in summer.
Then there are the plain cases: a prepaid plan with no international option, a work phone that has no business carrying private data, or simply wanting a second line that keeps working if something happens to the first. If there are several of you in the rental car, one hotspot covers everyone, and your usual number stays active and reachable alongside it.
Where the networks actually reach in Iceland
Iceland is sparsely populated and the networks follow the people. Almost everyone lives on the coast along the Ring Road, and that is exactly where mobile internet is dependable: in Reykjavík and the capital region including Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður, in Reykjanesbær and at Keflavík Airport, in Selfoss, Vík í Mýrdal, Höfn, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri and Húsavík. The routes most people drive are covered too: the Golden Circle with Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss, the south coast out to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
The interior is another story. The highlands have no settlements, so there are almost no masts. On the F-roads to Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk or Askja, and on the Kjölur and Sprengisandur crossings, having no signal is the norm rather than the exception. The Westfjords around Ísafjörður, narrow Eastfjord side valleys and some road tunnels have gaps as well.
Your phone moves between Síminn and Vodafone Iceland on its own; there is nothing for you to set. In the uninhabited parts of the country, plan as if there were no signal anyway: load maps and your route offline, check road conditions on road.is while you still have coverage, and tell someone where you are heading.
Straight talk: a prepaid data plan, and no Icelandic number
This eSIM runs alongside the line you already use. You buy the data before you fly, you cannot spend more than you bought, and there is no contract, no registration and no meter running in the background. It makes sense if your carrier bills data abroad separately, if the roaming allowance you do have is capped and runs out mid-trip, if you are on prepaid without an international option, or if you want a second line next to your private or work number.
And one point that matters more in Iceland than elsewhere: this is a data-only plan. You get no Icelandic phone number, you cannot make calls on it and you cannot send or receive text messages. The official 112 Iceland emergency app sends your location by text and then places a call — that runs over your normal number. So keep your usual SIM active, especially if you are driving or hiking alone.

Iceland gets by on remarkably few apps. Almost everything is paid by card, down to the coffee at a petrol station — you will barely touch cash. What you actually need is weather, road conditions and a way to send your location if something goes wrong. The Icelandic Met Office at vedur.is carries the wind and storm warnings, the road administration at road.is shows which passes are closed or iced over, and safetravel.is is where you leave a travel plan. Install the official 112 Iceland app before you fly. In the capital region Wolt delivers food and groceries; outside it, delivery is barely a thing. Icelandic banking and government apps such as Ísland.is or Aur require an Icelandic ID number and cannot be set up as a visitor — and you do not need them. Do download your route offline before you set off, whether in Google Maps or an offline map app: the interior has long stretches with no signal at all.
112 Iceland
The official emergency app from Iceland's 112 emergency line and the ICE-SAR rescue teams. It sends your location to the emergency number 112 and can log your position at intervals while you hike, so someone can find you.
To do that it sends a text message and then places a call — both run over your normal phone number, not over this data eSIM. Keep your usual SIM active.
Veður (Met Office)
Weather plus storm and hazard warnings from the Icelandic Met Office. In Iceland both can change within a few hours.
Nothing updates without a signal. Load the forecast while you are still in town, before heading into the highlands or the Westfjords. The Met Office aurora forecast is on vedur.is.
Umferðin (Road Administration)
Road conditions, closures and webcams from the Icelandic Road Administration, in your browser at umferdin.is. Shows whether a track, a mountain pass or a coastal stretch is currently open.
The F-roads into the highlands open only in summer and close without warning. Do not trust the route Google Maps suggests.
Hopp
Icelandic app for taxis and e-scooters. Covers Reykjavík, the surrounding towns, Reykjanesbær and Keflavík Airport.
Uber and Lyft do not operate in Iceland, and outside the capital region there is essentially no app-based ride service — you need a rental car, the bus or a taxi by phone.
Klappið (Strætó)
Ticket app for the yellow Strætó buses in Reykjavík and the surrounding area, with single fares and passes.
Sign-up does not work with every foreign phone number. On the bus you can pay contactless with Visa or Mastercard instead.
Parka
Pays parking fees in Reykjavík and at many visited sites, including Þingvellir National Park.
Not every car park uses the same app; some places use EasyPark. If you do not pay, the bill reaches you later through the rental company.
