Order and open the email
You pick your data plan and get the eSIM straight to your inbox: a setup link, a QR code and the details to type in by hand. Set it up at home on Wi-Fi and there is nothing left to do on the road.
Arrive in Luxembourg
Whether you land at Luxembourg Findel Airport, pull in by train at Gare de Luxembourg or drive over from Trier, Thionville or Arlon: after arrival, switch mobile data over to the new line in your settings and leave data roaming on for it.
Validity starts, you are online
The days only start counting once you first connect to a Luxembourg network, not when you buy. From then on you browse, share the connection by hotspot with a laptop or tablet, and top up whenever you need to.

В каких сетях ты будешь на связи в Люксембурге?
In Luxembourg the eSIM finds a network on its own — there is nothing for you to set by hand.
The moment you switch your phone on in Luxembourg, the eSIM registers with Orange Luxembourg or Tango, whichever is available where you are. You pick nothing and type nothing in. If it does get stuck somewhere, the usual trick works: turn airplane mode on and off again, or set network search to manual in your settings and tap Orange Luxembourg or Tango yourself. Watch out close to the border: in Schengen, Wasserbillig, Rodange or Troisvierges your phone likes to grab the German, French or Belgian network from the other side. This plan is for Luxembourg only, so hold the network manually there if in doubt.
Coverage is dense wherever people live and work: Luxembourg City with the station quarter, the old town and the office towers on Kirchberg, the south around Esch-sur-Alzette, Belval, Differdange and Dudelange, the rail and motorway axis through Mersch, Ettelbruck and Diekirch up to Clervaux, plus the Moselle towns of Remich, Grevenmacher and Schengen and the tourist spots Echternach, Vianden and Mondorf. It thins out where the country cuts deep: in the hiking gorges of the Mullerthal, in the Our valley and around the reservoir at Esch-sur-Sûre, and in the forests of the Éislek in the north. The capital can lose signal too, mainly down low: in the casemates, in the rock around the Pfaffenthal lift and down in the Grund. Up on the bridges you are usually back to normal reception. So download your hiking maps before you set off.

When a data line of your own actually pays off in Luxembourg
Let us be honest: many people travelling to Luxembourg already have data included in their plan at home. So we are not going to pretend you will save a fortune here. There are still good reasons for a line of your own, and they are quite specific.
The first one is the work phone. Luxembourg is a place of work: Kirchberg, the banking district, the conference halls, plus tens of thousands of people commuting in every day from Trier, Thionville and Arlon. If you are here on business, you often do not want private browsing, streaming and video calls home going through the company line. A second, clearly separated data line in the same device solves that without carrying a second phone.
The second reason is mundane and hits almost everyone: your own allowance runs out. After two days of navigation, map downloads and uploaded photos a small bundle is empty, and topping up with your own operator from abroad is rarely quick and rarely cheap. Here you just top up — no contract, no minimum term, and nobody checking your documents.
The third applies to everyone not coming from next door. Travellers from the United States, Turkey, Brazil or Japan seldom have a plan that covers Luxembourg sensibly — it is billed by usage, and you only find out what that costs once the bill arrives at home. A prepaid bundle whose size you knew in advance is simply the calmer option.
Where the networks reach — and where they do not
Luxembourg is tiny on the map, but the landscape is anything but flat, and that is exactly what decides your reception. In Luxembourg City, on Kirchberg, in the station quarter and along the tram line, coverage is dense. The same goes for the industrial south around Esch-sur-Alzette, Belval, Differdange and Dudelange, for the Mersch–Ettelbruck–Diekirch axis, and for the motorways towards Trier, Metz and Arlon that half the country drives every morning.
Away from that it gets less reliable. The Mullerthal with its narrow rock clefts, the Our valley on the German border, the area around the reservoir at Esch-sur-Sûre and the forest stretches of the Éislek are beautiful precisely because there is so little built there — and masts are part of what is not built. For a hike that means: download the map first, agree on a meeting point first. That is not a weakness of this eSIM; any Luxembourg card would behave the same.
And the capital has a quirk that surprises visitors: it is built on two levels. Up on the bridges reception is usually good; down in the casemates, in the rock at the lift to Pfaffenthal and in the lanes of the Grund it can drop out. A few steps later it is normally back.
Registration: what applies in Luxembourg — and what applies to you
Under the law of 7 June 2017 there are no anonymous prepaid cards in Luxembourg any more. Anyone buying a Luxembourg prepaid SIM with a +352 number has to register it in their own name with a valid ID card, passport or residence permit — in the shop, or online with a photo of the document. Without that registration the operator switches the card off. This applies to residents and visitors alike.
This eSIM is not affected: it is a data-only plan without a Luxembourg phone number, so there is nothing to register and no ID to show anyone. What you do not get, we will say just as plainly — no +352 number, no SMS, no calls over the network. If you need a local number in Luxembourg for authorities, a bank or a tradesperson, there is no way around a registered local card.
A second point that gets practical in Luxembourg: the border is never far. In Schengen, Wasserbillig, Rodange or Troisvierges your phone sometimes grabs the German, French or Belgian network from the other side. This plan is for Luxembourg only — set network search to manual for a moment and pick Orange Luxembourg or Tango, and you are back on.
