The eSIM is registered on Airtel and Orange at the same time. When you switch it on, your phone picks whichever signal is stronger, and falls back to the other one if that signal drops. There is nothing to configure, no access point to type in and no number to register. One thing matters: data roaming has to stay switched on, or the connection stays silent even though everything else is set up correctly.
The masts stand thickest in Antananarivo and around Ivato airport, plus Toamasina, Mahajanga, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Toliara and Antsiranana. On Nosy Be you have coverage in Hell-Ville, Ambatoloaka and along the hotel beaches, and the same holds in Morondava and in the village of Andasibe. Along the RN7 between Antananarivo and Toliara the signal drops out repeatedly between the stopover towns, and on the trails of the national parks — Isalo, Ranomafana, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Andringitra, Masoala — you usually have nothing at all. Download your maps, bookings and music while you are still in town.

Why your home contract gets expensive in Madagascar
What roaming in Madagascar costs is set by your own operator, not by the network on the ground. The price usually sits in a country zone far down the tariff sheet, often as a daily flat rate or an amount per megabyte, and it varies so much between operators that quoting a general figure here would be worthless. That is exactly the problem: before you travel, you do not know what you are agreeing to.
On top of that, roaming runs quietly. Your phone attaches by itself as you taxi in, apps sync in the background, a video loads — and you see the bill weeks later at home. A prepaid eSIM turns that around: you pay a fixed amount up front, the allowance is capped, and when it is used up it stops. No contract, no notice period, no extra charge next month.
How far Airtel and Orange actually reach
Madagascar is big, and the network follows people rather than sights. In Antananarivo, around Ivato airport, and in Toamasina, Mahajanga, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Toliara and Antsiranana you normally have stable mobile internet. On Nosy Be the same goes for Hell-Ville, Ambatoloaka and the hotel beaches, and it holds in Morondava and the village of Andasibe.
Between those points it thins out. On the RN7 from Antananarivo to Toliara you have signal in the stopover towns and often nothing at all for minutes in between. In the national parks coverage usually reaches the gate and the lodges, and stops on the trails of Isalo, Ranomafana, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Andringitra or Masoala. That is not a fault in your eSIM, it is where the masts stand — and the reason to download maps, booking confirmations and music before you leave town.
Registration is mandatory — and what that means for you
SIM cards in Madagascar have to be registered to a person. Buy one locally and the counter photographs your passport, usually along with your entry stamp; unregistered cards get switched off. For you that means a queue in the arrivals hall, a form to fill in, and no connection until it is done. On a late arrival at Ivato the kiosks may not even be staffed.
The data eSIM skips that route, because it runs as a guest on the Airtel and Orange networks and gives you no Malagasy phone number. The trade-off deserves to be said plainly: without a local number you cannot use MVola, Orange Money or Airtel Money — and for many Malagasy people those are simply how everyday payments work. Bring enough cash in ariary, particularly outside Antananarivo and Nosy Be.

Two things stand out in Madagascar straight away: there is no Uber, and outside the hotels almost everything is paid in cash. Knowing in advance which app people actually use here, and which one demands a Malagasy number, saves you a first day of trial and error. Download everything before you fly — with 1 to 3 GB in your pocket you do not want to spend the allowance on app downloads.
Piqla
Antananarivo's home-grown ride app. You book ahead and watch the car on the map instead of haggling over the fare at the kerb.
Works at scale only in Antananarivo. Set the account up before you fly — the confirmation code arrives by SMS, and a data eSIM has no number. Uber, Bolt and inDrive do not operate in Madagascar; outside the capital you agree the price with a street taxi before you get in.
Misy
The second ride app, covering taxi, motorbike and bajaj. Beyond Antananarivo it also serves Nosy Be, Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) and Toamasina.
Same here: create the account before you travel, the confirmation code comes by SMS. Paying by mobile money requires a Malagasy number — on a data eSIM you pay the driver in cash, so carry small ariary notes.
MVola, Orange Money and Airtel Money
Madagascar's mobile money. Market stalls, small restaurants, guides and guesthouses settle up through it; for many locals it is simply the wallet.
It only works with a local SIM registered against your passport. A data eSIM has no Malagasy number, so cash in ariary is your fallback — and ATMs thin out fast outside the bigger towns.
The country's default channel: drivers, guides, lodges and tour operators all reply here, often by voice note. It runs on your eSIM data, calls included.
Sign in at home before you fly. If you get logged out on the road, the verification SMS goes to your home number — and you cannot reach that without your own SIM card.
Maps.me or OsmAnd
Offline maps built on OpenStreetMap. They know the dirt tracks, village names, park gates and many lodges that other maps simply leave out.
Download the Madagascar map while you still have WiFi. Park trails and many rural roads have no signal — out there, only what is already on your phone helps.
Facebook and Messenger
Madagascar's main channel for reaching a business. Plenty of guesthouses, guides and tour operators run a Facebook page instead of a website and answer there faster than by email.
There is no booking system behind it — your reservation exists only in the chat. Get the date, price and address confirmed in writing before you send a deposit.
