Choose the amount of data that fits your trip and order. You get an email straight away with a setup link and a QR code. No account and no copy of your passport required.
Set it up at home, start it in the Netherlands
Install the eSIM in peace before you travel, either by tapping the link or by scanning the QR code with your phone. Your normal card stays in the device. The line only goes live when you arrive in the Netherlands and connect for the first time — whether that is at Amsterdam Schiphol, Eindhoven, Rotterdam The Hague, Groningen Eelde or Maastricht Aachen, at a station or at the border. That is also when validity starts, so you lose no days beforehand.
After you arrive
Turn off flight mode, switch data roaming on for the Simbye line and set it as the line for mobile data. Within a minute or two you will see KPN, Odido or Vodafone on screen. If not, flight mode for ten seconds fixes it. Then you can book the train or the taxi right away.

In the Netherlands the eSIM connects on its own to one of the three networks: KPN, Odido or Vodafone. You never pick a network and you configure nothing.

Once you arrive, your phone picks the network by itself: KPN, Odido or Vodafone. Which one you get depends on what comes in best where you are standing. There is no APN to type in and nothing to configure. Only two things matter: switch data roaming on for the Simbye line, and set that line as the one for mobile data. If nothing happens after a few minutes, flight mode for ten seconds almost always sorts it out. And if one network is weak in a particular spot, you can set network selection to manual in your settings and try another one.
The Netherlands is small and densely built, so mobile internet is rarely the problem here — usually 5G in the cities. Where it gets thinner (the ferries to the Wadden islands, out on the mudflats, in the dunes) and why reception dips on the train between Amsterdam and Rotterdam is covered further down.

When roaming on your home contract gets expensive
Roaming on your own contract is rarely predictable, and it gets expensive in four places.
First, a plan that is unlimited at home is almost always capped once you travel: there is a fair use limit, and beyond it your operator bills per gigabyte. Unlimited mobile internet in the Netherlands is not something your home contract guarantees. Second, many operators charge a flat daily fee outside their home market, and that fee runs on days you barely touch the phone. Third, the allowance for abroad is often small and gone after a few days, and you can only top it up on your operator's terms. Fourth, plenty of company phones simply have roaming switched off, and there is nothing you can change about that from the road.
If you are arriving from Turkey, Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, the Gulf or the US, look at your tariff before you fly: depending on the operator you pay a daily fee, get a small extra allowance, or pay per megabyte. And there is the practical reason that has nothing to do with price: a second line you can just switch off when the data is gone, without your private number going offline.
Where the networks reach and where they don't
Three networks operate in the Netherlands: KPN, Odido and Vodafone. The country is small and densely built, so real dead spots are rare. Across the Randstad with Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, and likewise in Eindhoven, Groningen, Nijmegen, Arnhem, Maastricht, Haarlem, Delft and Leiden, you have coverage everywhere, usually 5G in the cities.
It is the same at the places you actually travel for: Zaanse Schans, Keukenhof near Lisse, Kinderdijk, Giethoorn, the beach at Scheveningen, the woods of the Veluwe and the Zeeland coast. It thins out on the ferries to the Wadden islands Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, out on the mudflats and in the dunes. On the Amsterdam–Rotterdam line, reception drops for a few seconds now and again between two cities, which is the journey and not the eSIM. Tunnels and underground car parks behave as they do anywhere in the world.
If nothing works in one particular spot, go into the network selection: setting it to manual and trying one of the other networks is often faster than waiting.
Two things to sort out before you fly
This is a data-only plan: no Dutch phone number, no calls and no SMS over the network, which also means no SMS verification codes. Calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal work normally over data, and you dial the 112 emergency number using your normal SIM.
And the setup belongs before departure: you need Wi-Fi once to install it, while validity only starts when the eSIM first connects inside the Netherlands. There is no ID or registration requirement for prepaid there, so nothing to upload and no passport to hand over.

The messenger here is WhatsApp too. Nearly every plan, every Tikkie and a lot of restaurant bookings run through it. If you are driving, you will usually have Flitsmeister on, the Dutch traffic and camera warning app. It is allowed there, while in Germany you are not permitted to use the camera warnings while driving. On-street parking can be paid by app using your number plate almost everywhere, typically with Parkmobile or EasyPark; machines still exist alongside. Two things catch travellers out again and again. The railway's rental bikes, the OV-fiets, are generally not available without a personal OV-chipkaart: you have to order one in advance and wait for it to arrive by post, plus a bank account for the direct debit. On a short visit, use a normal rental shop or an app service like Donkey Republic instead. And popular museums such as the Anne Frank House sell timed entry online only, often weeks ahead. That is exactly the moment you want data on the go. In many shops the rule is pinnen: cards yes, but not every credit card is accepted.
NS
The Dutch railway app: live departures, platform changes, disruptions and e-tickets for intercity and regional trains. You can pay by credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, no Dutch bank account needed.
An NS ticket is valid on the train only, not on buses, trams or the metro. And if you check in with a bank card or phone instead of buying a ticket, you must check out again at your destination, otherwise you are charged far too much. The card readers do not take American Express.

It is a planner, not a ticket shop for every route. On buses, trams, the metro and trains you normally check in directly with a contactless bank or credit card or with your phone — and you must check out again at your destination, otherwise you are overcharged.
Uber
Works normally in the Netherlands and covers Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and the surrounding area, plus towns like Delft, Leiden and Haarlem. Drivers there hold a taxi licence, so it is closer to ordering a regulated taxi by app than to ridesharing.
Outside the Randstad it thins out. In smaller towns and on the islands the wait can be long or no car comes at all, so call the local taxi company or take one from the station rank instead.
Thuisbezorgd.nl
The country's big delivery service, with a wide choice of restaurants including in smaller towns where nobody else delivers. The app is available in English.
Each restaurant decides which payment methods it accepts. Credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are usually there and iDEAL is not compulsory, but check before you order rather than when the driver is already at the door.
Tikkie
The normal way to split money in the Netherlands: a restaurant bill, a ticket, a tank of fuel. You get a link over WhatsApp and pay through it.
Paying a Tikkie effectively runs through iDEAL, which needs a Dutch bank account. With a foreign card the link opens but usually will not go through. Pay the person back in cash or via PayPal instead.
Buienalarm
Rain radar down to the minute: the app tells you whether you will stay dry for the next two hours and exactly when the shower passes through. In a country where almost everything is done by bike, this is how you plan your day.
Free and no sign-up, but it is purely a weather app: no tickets, timetables or payments here.
