Как работает Simbye eSIM для Катара?
Подключение менее чем за 2 минуты
Buy the eSIM and set it up
Right after your purchase you get an email with a link and a QR code. One tap on the link is enough, or scan the code with your camera. Do it calmly at home on WiFi — your plan does not start counting down yet.
Land in Doha
Qatar has exactly one airport for scheduled flights: Hamad International (DOH), southeast of Doha. The old Doha International now only handles cargo and government flights, so you will not arrive there. Once you have landed, switch on data roaming for the Simbye line. The moment your phone registers in Qatar the plan starts and you are online, often before you reach baggage claim.
Get moving
Call a taxi, plan a metro route, load the map, order food. For a laptop or tablet just open the hotspot, that is allowed. And when your data runs low, top up wherever you are — no shop needed.
In Qatar your phone connects to Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar on its own — there is nothing for you to set.

As soon as you land in Qatar and switch on data roaming for the Simbye line, your phone connects to one of the country's two networks: Ooredoo Qatar or Vodafone Qatar. That happens in the background, and it is normal for the phone to switch between them. There is no APN to type in anywhere. If the connection is not there right after you land at Hamad International, turn flight mode on for ten seconds and off again, or start a manual network search in your settings — that gets the line up almost every time.
Qatar is small, and coverage follows where people live. In Doha you have signal everywhere: West Bay, Msheireb, Souq Waqif, The Pearl, Katara, Lusail and Al Rayyan with Education City. The same goes for Al Wakrah, Al Khor and Al Thakira, for Umm Salal and Al Daayen, and along the main roads out to Dukhan in the west, Mesaieed in the south and up to Al Zubarah fort in the north. It only thins out far from town: in the dunes at Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea on the Saudi border, and off the tracks around Zekreet. If you are booking a desert trip, download the map offline first — then a dead spot out there costs you nothing.
eSIM или местная SIM-карта в Катаре?
| Сравнение | Simbye eSIM | Местная SIM-карта |
|---|---|---|
| When you get online | Set up before you fly, connected the moment you land in Doha | Only after queuing at a kiosk in the arrivals hall |
| ID required | No, nothing to show and nothing to register | Yes, registration is mandatory in Qatar — the original passport is required, copies and photos are not accepted |
| Where you buy it | Online, delivered by email with a link and QR code before you leave home | At the Ooredoo and Vodafone desks past baggage claim at Hamad International, or in a shop in the city |
| Payment | In advance, in your own currency | On the spot in Qatari riyal at the counter |
| Phone number | None, data only, no calls or SMS over the network | A Qatari number is included |
| Your SIM tray | Stays untouched, your home number stays reachable | You have to pull out your SIM and keep it safe for the rest of your trip |
| Topping up | Top up any time from your phone, no shop visit needed | Top up at a machine, with a scratch card or in the operator's app |
| If something goes wrong | Support by email, in English or German | Back to the counter, usually in English or Arabic |
Why roaming on your home contract gets expensive in Qatar
Wherever your contract is from, Qatar is almost never part of what it covers at no extra cost. The moment your phone registers on Ooredoo or Vodafone Qatar, your provider's ordinary international price list applies. Without a travel add-on, many contracts bill per megabyte there — and since your phone keeps working in the background, a few maps, chats and photos add up faster than you would think. A prepaid eSIM turns that open-ended bill into an amount you decide on before you fly.
The second point is timing. The old routine went like this: land, queue at the kiosk in the arrivals hall, show your passport, swap the SIM, stow the old one somewhere. In Qatar registration is mandatory when you buy locally, the original passport is required and copies are not accepted. That is exactly the half hour after a night flight you skip when the eSIM is already set up at home. And because the plan only starts with your first connection in Qatar, you lose no days by buying it early.
There is a practical side effect too: your SIM tray stays untouched. Your usual number stays active, so calls and texts from home still arrive — the bank, the airline, the verification code. Only your data runs over the eSIM.
Where the networks reach in Qatar
Qatar has two networks, Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar, and both are built for a small country where the vast majority of people live in greater Doha. Coverage there is dense: West Bay with its towers, Msheireb Downtown, Souq Waqif, the Corniche, The Pearl, Katara, the new district of Lusail with its stadium, and Al Rayyan around Education City. The Doha Metro's three lines are served as well — load your route before you ride the escalator down, in case the signal drops in the tunnel. Stations and trains also give you a daily WiFi allowance.
Outside the capital it holds up along the settled areas and the main roads: Al Wakrah and Mesaieed in the south, Umm Salal and Al Daayen north of Doha, Al Khor and the mangroves of Al Thakira on the east coast, Dukhan in the west and all the way up to Al Zubarah fort at the northern tip. For the usual loop around the country that is gap-free.
Do expect it to thin out where nobody lives. In the dunes at Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea on the Saudi border, and off the tracks near Zekreet on the west coast, the connection can disappear entirely. For you it simply means: save the map offline, agree the meeting point in advance, and the desert trip is relaxed with or without bars.
App-based calls are restricted on Qatari SIM cards
In Qatar, voice and video calls over apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype are restricted on local Qatari SIM cards. This eSIM runs over international roaming, where travellers generally report that such calls still go through. We are not promising it: the local network decides what connects.
Chats, voice messages, photos and videos work normally either way. If you depend on a video call, plan around Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams — those are usually not affected.

Приложения, которые действительно нужны тебе в Катаре
Doha runs on apps — Karwa Taxi or Uber to get around, Talabat and Snoonu for food, the Hayya app for paperwork. Almost all of them want a confirmation code by SMS the first time you open them. This eSIM is data only and has no phone number of its own, so here is the tip that matters most: set the accounts up at home, while you can still receive the code on your usual number. Once you are in Qatar, all you need is data.
Karwa Taxi
The official turquoise taxis run by Mowasalat. Book a ride in the app, track the driver, pay by meter. At Hamad International, Karwa is the service that picks you up right outside the terminal.
Qatar does not use street addresses the way you are used to, but zone, street and building numbers. Drop your destination as a pin on the map or the driver will be hunting for it.
Uber
Works normally in Doha, shows the fare up front and charges the card you saved. Under the "Taxi" category you can also hail a Karwa taxi through it.
For the first ride from the airport the Karwa rank is usually the simpler option. Careem left Qatar completely in February 2023.
Snoonu
Qatar's own super app: food, groceries, pharmacy, flowers, laundry and courier in one place. English and Arabic, international cards accepted.
Setting up the account sends a confirmation code by SMS. This eSIM is data only and has no phone number — have the code sent to your usual number, or set the account up before you travel.
Talabat
The most widely used delivery app in Qatar, with the biggest choice of restaurants and supermarkets. Takes international cards and cash on delivery.
Talabat also sends a confirmation code by SMS when you create the account — a foreign number is usually accepted, you do not need a Qatari one. This eSIM has no phone number, so set the account up before you travel, on your usual number.
Sila
Sila (صلة) from Qatar's Ministry of Transport puts metro, bus, tram and taxi into one journey planner. The Doha Metro runs three lines — Red, Green and Gold — meeting at Msheireb station.
Load your route before you head down into the station — the signal can drop out in the tunnel. Stations and trains also give you 30 minutes of free WiFi per day.
Metrash
The Ministry of Interior app (formerly Metrash2) for visas, ID and traffic fines. If you live in Qatar, almost every official errand runs through it.
Not usable for tourists: registration requires a Qatari ID and a Qatari phone number. To check a rental car fine, use the MOI web portal with your passport number instead.
