There is nothing to configure. The first time you switch the phone on in the country it registers with the partner network automatically and stays there. If a spot shows full bars but nothing loads, the same trick almost always works: toggle airplane mode off and on, or restart the phone, so the line registers again. The one thing that matters is that data roaming is enabled for the Simbye line — without that switch it stays silent.
Claro covers the route almost every trip takes: Guatemala City, Antigua, the Panamericana towards Chimaltenango, Panajachel and the larger towns on Lake Atitlán, Quetzaltenango, Chichicastenango, Cobán, Río Dulce, plus Flores and Santa Elena in Petén. It thins out in the mountains and the jungle: on the dirt road to Lanquín and Semuc Champey, in the Cuchumatanes around Todos Santos, on the Acatenango climb, deep inside Tikal National Park and on the boat across Lake Atitlán the connection can drop completely. Tigo, the country's other network, reaches further in rural areas but is not part of this eSIM — worth knowing if you need signal away from the main routes.

eSIM Guatemala instead of roaming on your home plan
Guatemala appears on almost no mobile contract's list of included countries. What your provider charges there is buried in the long country table at the back of the price sheet — a daily flat rate with some, per started megabyte with others, often tiered and with a cut-off nobody keeps in mind on holiday. You do not notice it during the trip, you notice it on the bill afterwards.
The eSIM turns that around: you pay a fixed amount up front, you see how much data you get, and when it is used up it simply stops. No contract, no cancellation, no surprise charge. In practice: data roaming off on your home card, data roaming on for the Simbye line — your number stays reachable for calls and verification codes, while all browsing runs over the eSIM.
How far Claro actually reaches
The classic loop is well covered. In Guatemala City and Antigua everything you expect works, video calls included. Along the Panamericana towards Chimaltenango and on to Panajachel the connection usually holds, as it does in Quetzaltenango, Chichicastenango, Cobán, Río Dulce and in Flores and Santa Elena, the base for Tikal.
The honest part: as soon as you leave the main roads it gets unreliable. On the gravel road to Lanquín and Semuc Champey, up in the Cuchumatanes, on the night climb up Acatenango, deep inside Tikal park and on the boats between San Pedro, San Marcos and Panajachel you often have nothing at all. Those are exactly the areas where Tigo reaches further, and Tigo is not part of this eSIM. Plan for it: download offline maps beforehand, save your shuttle confirmation and accommodation address as a screenshot, and tell your family that two days of radio silence on that stretch is normal.

In Guatemala almost everything runs on data: your shuttle driver writes on WhatsApp, the earthquake warning arrives as a push notification, and anyone who has not sorted out a Tikal ticket in advance stands at the gate counting cash. Set these six up at home on Wi-Fi while your own number can still receive SMS codes — on the ground all you need after that is data.
Uber
Runs in Guatemala City and Antigua, including pickups at La Aurora airport. The fare is fixed before you ride, and you can switch the payment method to cash in quetzales.
Outside the few large cities there are no drivers: nobody picks up in Petén around Flores and Tikal, at Lake Atitlán or in Semuc Champey. There you rely on shuttles and local taxis.
PedidosYa
The country's biggest delivery service, grown out of the former Hugo app. Brings food, supermarket orders and pharmacy items, with the densest coverage in Guatemala City and Antigua.
The account is confirmed by SMS code. Set it up at home with your own number, because this data eSIM cannot receive SMS. Foreign credit cards are not always accepted at checkout.
INSIVUMEH Alerta de Terremotos
The official earthquake early warning from the state volcano and weather institute, free for iPhone and Android. It often alerts you before you feel the quake and grades the warning by your location.
Spanish only. You only get warning time when the epicentre is farther away, from roughly 50 kilometres — right above it the quake arrives before the alert. And it can only reach you while your phone is online: with mobile data switched off the alert never arrives.
GuateGo
The easiest way to book shuttles in advance between Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Semuc Champey, Cobán and Flores, at fixed prices instead of haggling at the roadside.

The Ministry of Culture's official ticket shop for Tikal, Yaxhá, Quiriguá and the other archaeological sites.
Online payment only works with a Guatemalan card. As a foreigner you buy at a BANTRAB bank counter or at the park gate, and there it is cash in quetzales.

The standard navigation app in Guatemala. Drivers report jams, landslides, closed roads and checkpoints in real time, which matters more on mountain roads than the route itself.
It only works online. Download offline maps in Google Maps as well for the stretches without signal before you set off.
