Your eSIM runs on exactly one network in New Zealand, and it pays to know what that means.
Половина мобильных замеров в стране выше этого значения, половина ниже. Speedtest Global Index, июль 2026. Отдельных данных по каждой сети для этой страны нет.
There is nothing to configure. Once you land and switch on data roaming for the new line, your phone registers on One NZ by itself. You do not pick a network name and you do not type in an access point. The one thing worth knowing: this is that single network. Switching over to Spark or 2degrees is not part of the deal, so where One NZ has nothing, you have nothing, even if the phone on the passenger seat still shows bars.
One NZ covers the places travellers actually go: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Nelson, Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown, plus the main highways in between. It thins out or disappears away from those, above all in Fiordland including the road to Milford Sound, in parts of the Catlins and over the Haast Pass. Plan those legs with maps that work offline, and download bookings and tickets in advance.

Why your home contract gets expensive in New Zealand
For almost every mobile provider New Zealand sits on the far side of the world, and the roaming terms show it. Sometimes it is a day pass that restarts every time you unlock your phone in the morning, sometimes a price per megabyte, sometimes a small bundle that is empty after a few videos. What the trip cost you on the phone often only shows up weeks later on the bill at home.
The prepaid eSIM turns that around. You pay once before you travel, you know how many gigabytes you have, and nothing arrives afterwards. No contract, no notice period, no tie to a provider on the ground. If the data runs short you top up along the way, and if you stay longer you simply extend.
Where the network actually reaches
Just over five million people live on an area larger than the United Kingdom, and coverage feels exactly like that. In Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Nelson, Dunedin and Queenstown you have solid signal, and on the main highways in between usually too.
The honest part: New Zealand has real dead zones, and One NZ is no exception. In Fiordland National Park, on the drive to Milford Sound, in parts of the Catlins and over the Haast Pass you have nothing at all for long stretches. That is the mountains and the distances, not the plan. Download offline maps, bookings and track information before you set off.
No registration, but expect dead zones
New Zealand does not require registration for prepaid connections. You do not have to fill in a form beforehand or show your passport anywhere after arrival to make the eSIM work. It is ready the moment you have installed it and switched on data roaming.
What you should plan for instead: some of the most beautiful parts of the country simply have no mobile network. That includes Fiordland and the drive to Milford Sound, parts of the Catlins and the Haast Pass. If you are heading there or walking for several days, download maps, bookings and track information in advance. Separately from connectivity: on top of your visa or the paid NZeTA, entry needs the free New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which you can submit no earlier than 24 hours before your trip begins.

Приложения, которые действительно нужны тебе в Новой Зеландии
A handful of apps make a New Zealand trip noticeably easier, and one of them decides how quickly you get through passport control. They all run on data, and none of them needs a New Zealand phone number. The one exception is the SMS code some services use to secure a brand new account, so set those accounts up before you fly, using your own number, because the data eSIM cannot receive text messages.
NZ Traveller Declaration
New Zealand's compulsory arrival declaration. You fill it in for free in the official app or at travellerdeclaration.govt.nz and show the code at passport control.
You cannot submit it earlier than 24 hours before your trip starts, and it has to be done by the time you reach passport control. It is free. Sites that charge you for it are not the official ones.
AT Mobile
Auckland Transport's app: timetables, live departures and connections for buses, trains and ferries across Auckland.
Standard adult fares can now be paid contactless with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay straight at the reader, and that comes with a daily fare cap. The 7-day cap and concession fares still need an AT HOP card, and you buy that at a machine or in a shop, not in the app.
CamperMate
The standard app for campervan trips: campsites, dump stations, toilets, fuel stops and reviews from other travellers, plus offline maps.
Freedom camping is tightly regulated. On many sites only certified self-contained vehicles with a fixed toilet are allowed, and the fines are steep. Some entries are user-submitted, so the sign on site always wins.
Plan My Walk
From the NZ Mountain Safety Council: tracks all over New Zealand with MetService weather warnings, Department of Conservation alerts for tracks and huts, and the current avalanche advisory.
Download your route and the alerts while you still have signal. On the big Fiordland tracks, Milford, Routeburn and Kepler, you have no reception along the way.
Uber
Operates in the larger cities, among them Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin, Nelson and Tauranga.
In smaller towns there is often no Uber. YourRide, the New Zealand taxi app, connects you to local taxi companies from Whangarei to Invercargill; out in the country a phone call to a local taxi firm is usually all there is. Set your account up before you travel: the data eSIM has no phone number and cannot receive an SMS verification code.
Delivereasy
A New Zealand delivery service that also covers many mid-sized towns where Uber Eats and DoorDash do not deliver.
Card only, there is no paying cash at the door. Outside the town centres the delivery zone ends quickly, so check the address before you fill the basket.
