Set it up at home
After your purchase you get an email with a link and a QR code. One tap on the link or one scan with the camera is enough, and Wi-Fi is all you need. The eSIM then sits ready on your phone and counts nothing yet — the days you bought do not expire.

After landing at Bahrain International Airport in Muharraq — or right after the border checkpoint if you come in from Saudi Arabia over the King Fahd Causeway — select the new line for mobile data and allow data roaming for it. You do not pick anything by hand. Once you land in Bahrain and switch the new line on for data, your phone registers with stc; in the network list it shows up as "stc" or "STC BH". Only two switches matter: allow data roaming for this line, and select it as the line for mobile data. No manual APN is needed. If nothing happens after landing, airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again fixes it almost every time — or switch once from automatic to manual network selection in your settings and tap stc.
Bahrain is a small country, which makes this easy: Manama, Muharraq with the airport, Seef with the malls, Juffair, Adliya, Riffa, Isa Town, Hamad Town, Budaiya and Saar all sit close together and are covered. So are the Amwaj Islands in the north, Bahrain Bay, the race circuit at Sakhir, Al Areen park and Durrat Al Bahrain in the far south; even out at the Tree of Life in the desert you are usually reachable. stc states it has rolled out 5G nationwide — whether your device gets 4G or 5G depends on the phone and where you are standing. Two honest exceptions: on the King Fahd Causeway towards Saudi Arabia your phone can latch onto the Saudi network before the border, and this plan does not cover it. And far out on the water — boat trips, the Hawar Islands, a fishing tour — it gets thin.

Why your plan from home gets expensive in Bahrain
Inside the EU you simply take your tariff with you. Bahrain is not part of that, so the roaming rules do not apply. Your operator files the country under a distant price zone billed per megabyte, or sold as day passes that add up fast. The awkward part is that you only notice when the bill arrives. A few maps in Google Maps, a voice message, one video uploaded from the souk — and it runs.
Then there is the second hurdle. A local Bahraini prepaid SIM is cheap, but it costs you time and paperwork: since 2017 you have to appear in person at a shop, show your passport and give a fingerprint. For a three-day business trip or a long weekend in Manama, that is a lot of admin on day one. The data eSIM skips both: you set it up at home over Wi-Fi, the days only start with your first connection in Bahrain, and your own number stays reachable as a second line — which matters, because hotels, drivers and delivery riders there really do call. What the plan cannot do, we say plainly: no Bahraini phone number, no calling over the network, no SMS.
How far the network reaches — and where it does not
Bahrain is an island state of roughly 780 square kilometres, barely larger than the city of Hamburg. You can drive it end to end in about an hour. That is the real reason mobile coverage here is so uneventful: there is simply not much empty ground. Manama with Bab Al Bahrain and the National Museum, Muharraq with the airport and the Pearling Path, Seef with the malls, Juffair, Adliya, Riffa, Isa Town, Budaiya, the Amwaj Islands, the race circuit at Sakhir, Al Areen and Durrat Al Bahrain in the south — you are covered in all of them. stc states it has rolled out 5G across the whole country; whether your phone shows 4G or 5G depends on the device and where you stand, and we will not promise you a speed we cannot measure.
Two places are worth knowing about. First, the King Fahd Causeway: on the 25-kilometre bridge to Saudi Arabia your phone can switch to the Saudi network before you even reach the checkpoint, and this plan does not cover it. If you cross regularly, plan for that. Second, the water: on boat trips, out at the Hawar Islands or on a sandbank like Jarada, the signal thins out or disappears — not a fault of your eSIM, just the distance to the nearest mast. Underground car parks beneath the big malls can drop out briefly too, as they do everywhere in the world.

This is a pure data plan and does not come with one. Set those accounts up at home, while your own number is still reachable.

The ride app used across the Gulf: cars in Manama, Seef and Juffair, to the airport and back.
Sign-up sends a code by SMS. The data eSIM has no phone number — set the account up at home, or have the code sent to your home number.
Talabat
Delivery app for restaurants and supermarkets such as Lulu, often late into the night.
The driver calls when he cannot find the address. Without a reachable number handover gets messy — put the hotel name, building and room number in the notes field.
Bahrain Taxi
Local taxi app with licensed drivers and a meter, around the clock, including pickups at the airport in Muharraq.
Booking and follow-up questions run heavily by phone. If nobody can call you, Careem or Uber with card payment is the easier route.
JESR (King Fahd Causeway)
The official app for the bridge to Saudi Arabia: waiting times at the checkpoints and live cameras.
Only relevant if you drive across. On the bridge itself your phone may switch to the Saudi network — you then have no data from this plan until you return.

Practically unusable for visitors: registration requires an account with a Bahraini bank. Pay by card or in cash in dinars.

App of the state bus company: routes, timetables and live bus positions for the red buses, airport connections included.
You cannot buy tickets in the app — you pay on board or with the GO Card. Bahrain has no metro or train; it is still only planned.
