Switch it on after landing

Why one regional plan beats a stack of country plans
A trip through this region rarely stays in one country. Island hopping takes you across Antigua, St Kitts, Nevis and St Lucia in a matter of days. People travelling South America tend to combine Peru with Bolivia and Brazil, or Argentina with Uruguay and Paraguay. And plenty do both: a few days in the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico first, then on to the mainland.
Buy a separate eSIM for every country and you pay a minimum amount every single time — including for the two days you spend on a small island. Across four countries you end up with four opened packages, and whatever is left in each of them expires with its own validity.
Here the data is a single pool: what you do not use on Barbados is still there in Bogotá. The bigger gain, though, is practical. You set up once at home with a QR code and have nothing left to do at the next country's airport — no hunting for a shop in the arrivals hall, no swapping a card, no registering with your passport.
Where coverage gets thin
Network quality in this region is very unevenly spread. In the big cities — São Paulo, Bogotá, Lima, Buenos Aires, Santo Domingo, San Juan — and in the island tourist centres, coverage is usually not a problem. Leave those zones and that changes.
On very small islands such as Anguilla, Montserrat or the outer Grenadines there are often only one or two networks, and they mainly cover the inhabited coast. On the mainland the gaps are large: the Amazon in Brazil and French Guiana, the highlands and Altiplano in Bolivia and Peru, the Gran Chaco in Paraguay, much of Argentine Patagonia. On boat crossings between the islands you will usually be offline.
So plan for offline too: download maps of the region in advance, keep booking confirmations and addresses as screenshots. And keep your usual SIM in the phone — this plan has no phone number, so for an ordinary call or a verification text you still need your own line.
Well-known destinations that are missing from the list
The plan is called Caribbean, but it does not cover the whole Caribbean. Not included are Cuba, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Aruba, Martinique and the US Virgin Islands, among others — only the British Virgin Islands are listed. If one of those is on your route, you will need a separate solution there.
One entry on the list is also misleading: the Netherlands Antilles has not existed as a country since 10 October 2010, so it is not clear which islands that entry covers today. Do not count on it as part of your route until that is settled.

These six cover what you actually use day to day here — and we flag where a verification text or a local bank account is required. All of them run on the eSIM's data. Set them up at home, though, while you still have your usual number for verification texts: this plan has no phone number of its own, so the code cannot arrive on the eSIM.
Across much of the region this is the usual way to stay in touch. Guesthouses, tour guides, drivers and restaurants answer here faster than by email, and calls run over data.

Uber
Runs in San Juan, Santo Domingo, Bogotá, Lima, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Price and route are fixed up front, so there is nothing to haggle over.
There is no Uber on the smaller islands such as Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Dominica or the Cayman Islands. There you take licensed taxis on fixed rates, or a shared route taxi.
inDrive
Widely used in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. You name your price and drivers bid on it — useful where meters are rare.
Registration runs through a verification text. Create the account before you leave, otherwise you cannot get in once you are there.
