Set it up before you fly
The eSIM arrives by email. One tap on the link, or scan the QR code from the mail, and the line is ready — calmly, on your Wi-Fi at home. Nothing is counting yet: validity starts with your first connection in Gabon.
Land in Gabon
Whether it is Léon-Mba in Libreville, Port-Gentil or Mvengue near Franceville: airplane mode off, data roaming on for the new line. Airtel normally shows up within a minute or two, with nothing to type in.
Get going
Maps, bookings, email and the hotspot for your laptop work straight away. If your data runs low you top up any time — same eSIM, no swap, no new QR code.

This eSIM connects to the Airtel network in Gabon — you don't have to pick a network.
You don't have to pick a network. Gabon has two networks, Airtel and Moov Africa Gabon Telecom, and this eSIM runs on Airtel. After landing you turn off airplane mode and switch on data roaming for the new line — that is all, and you never type in an APN. If nothing shows up after a few minutes, airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again fixes it in most cases, or you search for networks by hand in the settings and pick Airtel.
Count on coverage in Libreville and the neighbouring communes of Owendo and Akanda, at Léon-Mba airport, and in Port-Gentil, Franceville, Moanda, Oyem and Lambaréné. Along the coastal road and the railway line towards Franceville the signal drops again and again and comes back in the towns. In the national parks and in the forest in between, no signal is the rule rather than the exception; on Pointe Denis across the bay from Libreville, do not count on coverage either.
가봉에서 eSIM과 현지 유심 중 어느 쪽이 좋을까요?
| 비교 | Simbye eSIM | 현지 유심 |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | None — the eSIM roams and never enters the Gabonese subscriber register | Passport required; the regulator ARCEP has unidentified cards blocked |
| Where you get it | By email, set up before you even leave home | At an Airtel or Moov shop in town, with opening hours and a queue |
| Payment | Online by card, in your own currency | Cash in FCFA; hardly any shop takes cards |
| Language | All in your language, no conversation needed | Contract and form in French |
| Phone number | None — data only | Comes with a Gabonese number, the real advantage of the local card |
| Airtel Money | Not usable | Can be set up with it, if your documents are accepted |
| First hour after landing | Online immediately, right in the arrivals hall | First find a shop, fill in the form, wait for activation |
| Topping up | Any time, online, same eSIM | Buy a scratch voucher at a kiosk and type in the code |
Why your home contract gets expensive in Gabon
For almost every operator in the world, Gabon sits in the most expensive roaming zone. What a gigabyte costs there is rarely visible before you travel — it is billed afterwards, often through day passes that renew at midnight, or through data that keeps ticking in the background while you are not even looking at your phone.
The reason is unglamorous: your operator buys the data in Gabon and adds its margin. A prepaid eSIM turns that around. You pay once, up front, you know exactly how much data you have, and when it is gone it is gone — no invoice appears that you did not order. No contract, no notice period, no registration, and you can top up whenever you need more.
Where the network reaches — and where it stops
Gabon is mostly rainforest, and coverage looks exactly like that. In Libreville, in Owendo and Akanda, at Léon-Mba airport, and in Port-Gentil, Franceville, Moanda, Oyem and Lambaréné you get ordinary mobile internet. In between it comes and goes: along the coastal road and the Trans-Gabon railway to Franceville the signal stands in the towns and disappears on the long stretches between them.
In Loango, Ivindo and Lopé, on the rivers and on the tracks heading into the forest, expect no signal at all — not slow data, none. Download your map offline beforehand, screenshot your bookings and write phone numbers down. And one more thing that belongs in an honest description: Gabon runs on 4G. There is no commercial 5G network there yet; the regulator and the two operators are still preparing for it.
Social networks are currently restricted in Gabon
On 17 February 2026 Gabon's media authority suspended access to the major platforms — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and WhatsApp among them. At the end of July 2026 the measure was still in force, with no announced date for lifting it. With WhatsApp, people report it working on some days and not on others.
This is a decision taken inside the country and we cannot lift it. We therefore cannot promise you that the blocked platforms will be reachable over this eSIM. Everything else — maps, email, browsers, booking sites, banking — works normally. Agree a second way to reach the people at home before you travel, and check the current situation again shortly before you fly.

가봉에서 정말 필요한 앱
Gabon speaks French and mostly pays in cash, in FCFA. Almost every local payment app is tied to a Gabonese phone number, which you only get with a passport in your own name — this eSIM does not give you one. What works on data alone: maps, bookings, email, your bank app from home, and the apps below. Anything that asks for an SMS code is better set up at home, on your own number.
Yango
A ride-hailing app announced for Libreville: the price up front instead of haggling at the kerb. Uber does not operate in Gabon.
As of August 2026 only driver recruitment had started and no launch date was published — check shortly before you travel whether anyone is actually driving in Libreville. Outside the capital it is not a thing. Sign-up needs an SMS code — create the account with your home number before you fly. For shared taxis you still need cash in FCFA.
My Airtel (Airtel Money)
One of the country's two mobile money apps, alongside Moov Money. Shops, drivers and small businesses settle through it, though cash is still king.
Requires a Gabonese Airtel number registered to your name with a passport. A data-only eSIM does not give you one — budget for FCFA in cash.
Yobo
A Libreville delivery app: meals, groceries and parcels to your hotel or flat, in Libreville, Akanda and Owendo.
You pay by mobile money or cash at the door — mobile money is out without a local number. Outside those three communes nobody delivers.
Setrag
Timetables, delays and disruption notices for the Trans-Gabon railway, from Owendo via Lopé to Franceville.
Tickets are not sold in the app. You buy them at the station counter — bring cash.
Lodges, guides, drivers and small hotels in Gabon reply here first, often faster than by email.
Caught up in the country's platform suspension since February 2026 and works on and off. Agree a second channel before you travel, such as email or a call on your home number.
Google Maps
Usable in Libreville. What matters more is the offline map you download over Wi-Fi before you fly.
Between the towns and in Loango, Ivindo and Lopé you have neither signal nor map. Many tracks are not mapped at all — without a guide or a saved route you are driving blind.
