Book before you travel
Choose your data package, pay, and the eSIM arrives by email within minutes – with a one-tap setup link and a QR code. Set it up at home on Wi-Fi: you need no Hungarian network for that, and the validity does not start yet.
Switch it on after you land
Validity begins with the first connection in Hungary. After landing at Budapest Ferenc Liszt or at Debrecen, turn on data roaming for the new line. From there the phone finds an available Hungarian network by itself.
Online in Hungary
The connection is up after a minute or two. Set the eSIM as your line for mobile data; your home number stays active for calls and texts. When the data runs low, top up any time without swapping the eSIM.

In Hungary your eSIM picks Telekom, Yettel or One on its own – you set nothing.
You do not pick a network. The eSIM registers on its own in one of the networks available – Telekom, Yettel or One. If it loses signal, it looks for the next one. Only if a spot gives you trouble is it worth going into the settings: on the eSIM line, turn off automatic network search and try another of the networks offered. What does matter is switching on data roaming for that one line, because it registers as a foreign line. You never have to type in an access point.
Hungary is well covered. Magyar Telekom is the largest operator; Yettel and One, formed in early 2025 out of Vodafone Hungary and DIGI, split the rest roughly evenly. All three run 4G nationwide and 5G in the cities. In Budapest, in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Győr, Miskolc, Kecskemét and Székesfehérvár, around Lake Balaton from Siófok through Balatonfüred and Tihany to Keszthely and Hévíz, in the Danube Bend at Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom, and in Eger and Tokaj, you have signal throughout. It thins out where almost nobody lives: the puszta around Hortobágy, the forests of the Bükk and Mátra, the Zemplén hills and the small villages of the Őrség on the Slovenian border.
|---|---|---|
| ID and registration | Not needed, you buy online with an email address | Required: Hungary demands photo ID for every prepaid SIM, and operators must re-confirm customer data every year |
| Where you get it | By email, at home before you fly | In a Telekom, Yettel or One shop – for foreigners usually only at a staffed branch |
| Time it takes | A few minutes, scan the QR code and you are done | Travel there, queue, forms – ID and signature required on the spot |
| When validity starts | With the first connection in Hungary, 7 to 180 days depending on the plan | At the moment of purchase in the shop |
| Phone number | None, data only | A Hungarian number is included |
| Calls and texts | Not on this line; your home number stays active alongside | Possible |
| Paying | Online by card, no forint cash needed | In forint on the spot, often with Hungarian-only menus |
| Topping up | Online any time, the same eSIM stays in your phone | Via machine, app or shop, mostly in Hungarian |
What roaming on your home contract really costs in Hungary
The moment your phone finds a network in Hungary, your domestic rate stops applying and your provider's roaming price list takes over. What that looks like differs completely from contract to contract: sometimes a small included allowance, sometimes a day pass charged for every day you start, sometimes billing per megabyte. Two weeks at Lake Balaton with maps, photos, videos and a bit of streaming in the evening runs through it faster than most people expect – and from then on every further gigabyte is charged separately. A prepaid eSIM turns that around: you pay once up front, the allowance is fixed, and nothing can appear on next month's bill.
Then there are the cases where a second line is simply more practical: the work phone whose data was not meant for a holiday, a contract with no roaming at all, a longer stay without a Hungarian contract. And everyone who would rather skip the shop visit: Hungarian law requires photo ID for every local prepaid SIM, operators must have the data re-confirmed each year, and foreigners without Hungarian ID need a staffed branch for it. The eSIM runs alongside your normal SIM: calls and texts on your usual number, internet on the data plan.
How far the three networks reach
Three operators share Hungary. Magyar Telekom is the largest; Yettel – formerly Telenor – and One split the rest roughly evenly. One has carried that name since the start of 2025, grown together out of Vodafone Hungary and DIGI. All three run 4G nationwide and 5G in the cities, above all in Budapest and its surroundings, in Debrecen, Győr, Szombathely and Kecskemét, and around Lake Balaton. You do not tie your eSIM to any of them – it registers on its own in one of the networks available where you are.
In practice that means: in Budapest with the Castle Hill, Parliament, the baths and the ruin bars, in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, Miskolc, Győr, Nyíregyháza and Székesfehérvár, on the northern and southern shores of Lake Balaton from Siófok through Balatonfüred and Tihany to Keszthely and Hévíz, in the Danube Bend around Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom, and in Eger and Tokaj, you have signal throughout, in many places on 5G. It goes thin where almost nobody lives: the puszta around Hortobágy, the forests of the Bükk and Mátra, the Zemplén hills on the Slovak border and the small villages of the Őrség in the west. There you drop back to 4G, and in some valleys signal can disappear altogether. For navigation it is enough almost everywhere – if you want to be certain, download the region's offline map beforehand.
Check your own contract first, before you buy
We are not going to claim this eSIM is the right answer for everyone. If your plan covers data in Hungary on reasonable terms and the allowance lasts your trip, you need nothing else. Reading your provider's roaming price list takes two minutes and settles the question.
The eSIM makes sense if your plan bills abroad per megabyte or through day passes, if the allowance will not last a two-week holiday, if you need a second line next to a work phone – or if you would rather skip the shop entirely. Because a local SIM is real effort in Hungary: the law requires photo ID for every prepaid card, operators must have customer data re-confirmed each year, and foreigners without Hungarian ID need a staffed branch to do it. Our eSIM registers as a foreign line and needs none of that.

Two things up front, then the rest takes care of itself. First, nearly every one of these apps confirms sign-up with an SMS code, and your data plan has no phone number – so create the accounts at home with your usual number, and in Hungary you only need internet. Second, card payment is accepted almost everywhere in Hungary, even for small amounts, and the currency is the forint, not the euro. And one reason to be online right at the airport: the ticket for the 100E airport bus from Budapest airport into the centre takes a minute in the BudapestGO app. Without internet you have to find the ticket machine or the BKK sales point in the terminal. For the run out to Lake Balaton the MÁV app sells the train tickets, and Bolt gets you across Budapest when no taxi is nearby.
BudapestGO
The official app of BKK, Budapest's transport authority. Live timetables for metro, tram, bus and the HÉV suburban rail, plus single tickets and 24- and 72-hour travelcards, payable with a foreign card.
The ticket for the 100E airport bus is quickest to buy in this app. Download it before you fly and activate the ticket before you board – inspectors check thoroughly.
Bolt
Rides on demand in Budapest and the larger cities. Uber came back in 2024 and dispatches the same licensed yellow taxis. Budapest taxi fares are regulated citywide at one rate, with no surge pricing.
Sign-up is confirmed by SMS code. Your data plan has no phone number, so create the account before you travel using your normal number.
Wolt
One of the two big delivery services, active in Budapest and in more than twenty other cities from Debrecen through Szeged and Pécs to Siófok. The other big app is called foodora – it was renamed from foodpanda in 2023, nothing else changed.
Sign-up runs on an SMS code, so set it up at home first. Outside the cities there is barely any delivery area.
MÁVPlusz
The new app of Hungarian Railways MÁV and the Volánbusz coaches: timetables, delays and tickets to Debrecen, Pécs, Eger, Szeged or Lake Balaton, plus the county and national passes.
The English version is still incomplete, country names appear partly in Hungarian during sign-up and not every country is on the list. If it fails, buy on mavcsoport.hu or at the counter.
e-Matrica (Nemzeti Útdíj)
The motorway vignette – not an app but the official site ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu. Hungary has no sticker; the vignette is digital and tied to your number plate. If you stay in one region, the cheaper county vignette is enough.
It must be valid before you enter the motorway; if you are already on it, you have 60 minutes to buy one. Plate and country code must match exactly or it is void. Rental cars usually come with one.
Facebook Messenger
Hungary's most used messenger by a clear margin over WhatsApp; Viber is widespread as well. Hosts, small restaurants and drivers often reply only there.
It runs on your Facebook account, so no phone number is needed. A freshly created account does sometimes ask for an SMS confirmation, so set it up before you travel.
