Set it up before you fly
After buying you get an email with an installation link and a QR code. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, where the connection is stable and you are not fighting with it after a long flight. The validity does not start at installation, only when the eSIM first connects to a network in Mozambique, so installing early costs you nothing.
Switch it on after landing
Whether you arrive at Maputo (MPM), Beira (BEW), Nampula (APL), Pemba (POL), Vilanculos (VNX) or Inhambane (INH): flip airplane mode on and off, then set the Simbye line as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line specifically. Within a minute or two you are on Vodacom and can message your transfer from the arrivals hall.

Mozambique has several mobile operators. This eSIM connects to the network of Vodacom Moçambique, the Vodafone group's operator in the country.
There is nothing to configure. As soon as you land in Mozambique with the eSIM active, your phone looks for the Vodacom network and registers on it by itself. You never have to type in an APN. The one thing that matters is that data roaming is switched on for the Simbye line. That sounds like it costs extra, but it does not: your data package is already paid for, the switch simply tells your phone it is allowed to join a foreign network. If you still have no signal after a few minutes, select the network manually once, and on an Android phone try turning 5G off and 4G/LTE on.
Vodacom is one of the country's large operators and strongest in the cities. Maputo and neighbouring Matola have solid 4G, and so do Beira, Nampula, Nacala and Tete. Along the tourist coast it holds up well: Vilanculos as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Tofo and Inhambane, Ponta do Ouro in the far south. The honest part: the further out you go, the thinner it gets. On the islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago, in Gorongosa National Park and on long overland stretches through sparsely populated provinces, coverage can disappear altogether. Why your home contract gets expensive in Mozambique
Roaming in Mozambique is not delivered by your provider back home. It is delivered by a Mozambican network that then invoices your provider for it. What eventually shows up on your bill is your provider's markup on that wholesale price, and the markup is highest for countries few of their customers travel to. That is why Mozambique and its neighbours sit in one of the most expensive zones with practically every operator, whether you are travelling from Germany, Turkey, Brazil, India or the United States.
What makes it unmanageable is that you cannot see what you are spending while you spend it. A phone keeps working in the background: uploading photos, syncing mail, updating apps. With daily passes you pay for the days you only glanced at a map twice. With per-megabyte billing the meter keeps ticking unnoticed and you learn the total once you are home. A prepaid eSIM inverts that. You pay once, up front, the plan is capped, and when it is empty it is empty. There is no invoice waiting for you after the trip.
There is also a practical point that often gets overlooked. The eSIM is a second line alongside your normal SIM. Your home number stays active and reachable while all data runs through the plan you already paid for. You do not have to force your phone into airplane mode or chase one Wi-Fi hotspot after another just to avoid a roaming trap.
Where the network reaches in Mozambique and where it does not
Mozambique stretches roughly 2,500 kilometres along the coast, and the mobile network follows the people: dense where many live, thin exactly where travellers want to go. Maputo and neighbouring Matola have solid 4G. The same picture holds in Beira, Nampula, Nacala and Tete. In those places you barely notice you are travelling, maps, bookings and video calls just work.
Along the coast, where most holidaymakers head, coverage is usable but uneven. Vilanculos as the launch point for the Bazaruto Archipelago, Tofo and Inhambane with their dive centres, Ponta do Ouro in the far south near the South African border: in the towns themselves and at the larger lodges you have signal, but at quieter bays it can drop away. On a boat crossing to Bazaruto or Benguerra, do not count on a stable connection. Make your arrangements before you leave the shore.
It gets genuinely thin in the north and inland. The islands of the Quirimbas Archipelago such as Ibo, Gorongosa National Park and long stretches of the overland routes between provincial capitals have no signal at all in places. Plan around it: download offline maps, screenshot your booking confirmations and tickets, and agree with your lodge in advance how you reach each other when the phone goes quiet. And note that a travel eSIM versus a local SIM card changes nothing here. In those places the person next to you has no signal either.
Mozambique requires biometric registration for local SIM cards
Since 2024, getting a Mozambican SIM card means showing up in person with an ID or passport and giving a fingerprint and a facial scan. Cards that are not properly registered get blocked on the regulator's instruction. For a traveller that means a pre-registered prepaid chip bought quickly at a street stall can go dead within days, leaving you with no connection.
This eSIM is not affected by any of that. It is not a Mozambican SIM card but a foreign travel eSIM roaming on the Vodacom network, so there is no registration and no shop visit. The honest trade-off: you do not get a Mozambican phone number. If you absolutely need a +258 number for M-Pesa or for a particular app, there is no way around a local SIM card and its registration.
