Book and install before you travel
Pick your data plan, pay, and you get an email with a link and a QR code shortly after. Install the eSIM calmly at home on Wi-Fi – your phone stores it and waits until you need it. The validity period does not start yet.
Switch it on when you arrive
Flights into Eswatini land at King Mswati III International Airport (SHO) at Sikhuphe in the Lubombo district, about 70 kilometres east of Manzini, with most connections coming from Johannesburg. If you drive in from South Africa you cross at Ngwenya/Oshoek, Lavumisa/Golela, Mahamba or Matsamo – opening hours differ between the posts, so check before you drive. Turn the eSIM on once you have landed or cleared the border: it finds Swazi MTN by itself, and your validity starts with that first connection.
Stay online on the road
You can share the connection from your phone to a laptop or tablet, and top up whenever data runs low – no shop, no scratch card. Before heading to Malolotja, Bulembu or the Lubombo area, download your maps and booking confirmations; coverage gets thin out there.

In Eswatini your eSIM connects to the Swazi MTN network on its own – there is no network to pick and nothing to type in by hand.
There is nothing to configure. As soon as you land at Sikhuphe or cross the border by car, your phone finds the Swazi MTN network and connects. If nothing happens after a few minutes, switch flight mode on and off once and check that data roaming is enabled for the eSIM – without that switch the connection stays dead. On some Android phones it also helps to set the network mode from 5G to 4G/LTE.
Coverage is strongest along the Mbabane – Ezulwini – Lobamba – Matsapha – Manzini corridor, which is where most travellers spend their time anyway. Malkerns, Siteki, Big Bend, Nhlangano, Simunye and Piggs Peak are usually fine too, as are the Ngwenya and Lavumisa border posts. It thins out away from the main roads: in the mountains around Bulembu, in Malolotja Nature Reserve, on the Lubombo plateau and in parts of the Hlane and Mkhaya reserves the connection can drop to 2G. That is still enough for WhatsApp messages, but not for maps, video calls or booking sites. Download your maps, reservations and border paperwork while you are still in town.

Why roaming on your home plan gets expensive in Eswatini
Eswatini, called Swaziland until 2018, is an independent kingdom between South Africa and Mozambique. What your provider charges for data here is set purely by its foreign-country roaming list, and southern Africa is rarely at the cheap end of those lists – whether your contract runs in Frankfurt, Istanbul, São Paulo or Dubai. Some plans still bill by the megabyte, others sell day passes that only pay off if you use them every single day. Finding that out from the bill after the trip is a bad way to learn it. A prepaid eSIM fixes the amount before you go: 1 to 3 GB, 7 or 15 days, no contract and no registration.
There is a second wrinkle: many people do not arrive by air at all, but by rental car from Johannesburg via Ngwenya or Lavumisa. That is the moment your phone quietly switches to roaming, mid-drive, with no shop anywhere near. An eSIM you installed beforehand takes over at the border. It also saves you the trip to an MTN shop, where a local card would mean showing your passport and being registered.
The third reason is mundane but common: you need the connection for things that simply do not work offline – the booking confirmation for Hlane, the WhatsApp question to the lodge in Ezulwini, the map to the track into Malolotja, your rental company's online form. Without data you are standing at the gate unable to phone anyone, because you have no local number.
Where the network reaches – and where it doesn't
Eswatini is a small country, and most of its life happens along one axis: from Mbabane in the highlands through the Ezulwini valley with Lobamba and the Mantenga cultural village, on past Malkerns and the industrial town of Matsapha to Manzini. Along that stretch the Swazi MTN network is at its densest, and you can usually count on a usable 4G connection. The larger towns elsewhere are connected too – Siteki on the Lubombo, Big Bend in the sugar belt, Simunye, Nhlangano in the south and Piggs Peak in the north – as are the Ngwenya, Lavumisa and Mahamba border posts and the airport at Sikhuphe.
It thins out exactly where the scenery is best. In Malolotja Nature Reserve and the mountains around Bulembu, up on the Lubombo plateau and in parts of Hlane and Mkhaya, the connection can fall back to 2G or disappear altogether. 2G is still enough for a WhatsApp message, but not for a map, a video or a booking site. That is not a fault in your eSIM, it is simply the terrain: a lot of mountain, not many masts.
In practice: download your offline map, your booking confirmations and anything else you will need while you are still in Mbabane or Manzini. If you are heading to Mkhaya, confirm the 10:00 or 16:00 pickup at Phuzumoya in advance – at the reserve itself you cannot rely on a signal. And plan on making that video call home from the lodge over Wi-Fi rather than from a viewpoint in the highlands.
The ID requirement applies to shop-bought SIM cards, not to your eSIM
Every SIM card in Eswatini has to be registered to a person. If you buy a card locally, the agent photographs your passport and registers you before the card works. It only takes a few minutes, but it only happens during shop hours. Do not count on finding an open sales point late in the evening or right at the border.
Your data eSIM is not affected by this. It connects to the Swazi MTN network as a visitor, with no counter and no passport copy. The trade-off: you do not get a local +268 number. Anything tied to such a number stays out of reach – above all mobile payment through MTN MoMo and e-Mali, which locals use for small amounts. Carry a card and some cash in lilangeni or South African rand for those situations.

에스와티니에서 정말 필요한 앱
Eswatini is small but has its own app landscape: what is taken for granted in South Africa often does not exist here, and the other way round. Set everything up while you still have Wi-Fi and while your usual number can receive verification codes – on a data-only plan no SMS code can reach you later. WhatsApp is the normal channel for lodges, guides and tour operators, so save those numbers in advance and download an offline map for the drives to Malolotja, Hlane and Mkhaya. English is an official language alongside siSwati, so a translation app is rarely needed.
Almost everything runs through it in Eswatini: lodges, drivers, tour operators and small restaurants reply on WhatsApp faster than by email or phone.
Set WhatsApp up while your usual number can still receive an SMS – registration needs a verification code. Out in the countryside the network often drops to 2G, which still carries messages but usually not voice calls.
MobiRide
The local ride-hailing app. You order a car in Mbabane, Manzini, Matsapha and the Ezulwini valley, see the fare upfront and pay by cash or card.
Uber does not operate in Eswatini – bringing the app across from South Africa gets you nothing. Outside the bigger towns you are down to shared minibuses (khombis) or a driver arranged in advance.
Swoop
Food delivery in Mbabane, Manzini, Matsapha and Kwaluseni, from the familiar chains to small family-run restaurants.
It only delivers to those four places. There is no delivery in the game reserves or in towns like Siteki and Nhlangano.
MTN MoMo
The country's mobile payment system. Locals use it for small amounts, for topping up airtime and for sending money, including where there is no card machine.
It only works with a local MTN number registered in a shop with your passport. A data-only plan cannot get you in, because sign-up and approvals run over SMS and keypad codes. The same applies to e-Mali from Eswatini Mobile – carry a card and some cash.
Google Maps
Eswatini is mapped properly: border posts, filling stations, lodges and the MR3 main road from Ngwenya via Mbabane to Manzini are all reliably there.
Download the offline map of the whole country beforehand. On gravel roads, in Malolotja Nature Reserve and on the Lubombo plateau the connection disappears, and that is exactly where you need the navigation.
Big Game Parks
biggameparks.org is where you book Hlane, Mkhaya and Mlilwane – the three reserves Big Game Parks runs. It runs in the browser; there is no dedicated app.
Mkhaya takes no self-drivers: you are collected at 10:00 or 16:00 at the Phuzumoya meeting point on the MR8, and you must have booked in advance. Sort this out while you still have a solid signal.
