What Is an eSIM? The Clear Guide to Embedded SIMs in 2025

by Maria Vergadoro 23 Jul 2025

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable SIM built directly into your device on an eUICC chip. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a mobile plan (a “profile”) over the air using secure GSMA standards called Remote SIM Provisioning.

How an eSIM Works

Your phone’s software securely contacts a carrier server (often via an SM-DP+ address), downloads the encrypted profile, and installs it automatically. No tray, no tiny card—just a digital setup.

Key Benefits vs. a Physical SIM

  • Instant activation & easy switching: Add or change carriers without waiting for mail or visiting a shop.
  • Multiple plans on one device: Many phones store several eSIM profiles (often one or two active at the same time).
  • Cheaper travel data: Buy local or regional plans online and skip expensive roaming.
  • More space, more durability: No SIM tray means tighter water sealing and more room for other components.
  • Perfect for IoT fleets: Businesses can provision thousands of devices remotely.

Which Devices Support eSIM?

Most flagship phones since 2018 support eSIM—e.g., iPhone XS and newer, recent Google Pixel models, and many Samsung Galaxy phones. Newer iPads and some laptops also include eSIM. Always check your device settings (“Add eSIM”) or ask your carrier to be sure.

How to Activate an eSIM

iPhone

  1. Get a QR or activation code from your carrier/eSIM provider.
  2. Open the Camera app, scan the QR, tap the notification, and follow the prompts.
Alternative: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, then choose manual entry if offered.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan.
  2. Select Add using activation code (or QR) and enter the details your provider gave you.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs.
  2. Tap + / Download a new eSIM, then scan the QR or choose Enter details manually if available.

Manual Activation & SM-DP+ Address (Optional)

If the QR code is missing or fails, you can often enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code manually. This address is the secure “gateway” your device uses to fetch the profile. You’ll receive it from your eSIM seller after purchase.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Double-check the activation code and SM-DP+ address.
  • Make sure you have a stable internet connection (Wi‑Fi or mobile data).
  • Restart the device and try again.
  • Update carrier settings or OS if prompted.
  • Contact your eSIM provider’s support if issues persist.

FAQ

Is an eSIM more secure?

Profiles are delivered via encrypted channels defined by GSMA. Physical SIM theft is eliminated, but overall security still depends on your device lock and carrier procedures.

Can I keep my physical SIM too?

Yes—unless your phone has no SIM tray (some newer models). Using both can help if your carrier doesn’t fully support eSIM features yet.

How many eSIMs can I store?

It varies by device. Most modern phones let you store several profiles and use at least one (sometimes two) at once.

Do I need the internet to activate?

Yes. You need an internet connection to download the eSIM profile.
