Pick the data amount and the validity, pay online, and the email with the link and QR code arrives a few minutes later.
Set it up before you fly
Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, it takes a few minutes. After landing – at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Singapore Changi, Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Incheon, Kuala Lumpur or Sydney – your phone finds the network on its own.
Turn on data roaming
Select the new line for mobile data and switch data roaming on for it. Leave data off on your usual line so it stays quiet. There is no APN to type in anywhere.

One eSIM for the whole trip instead of one per country
An Asia trip rarely stays in one country. Bangkok, then Siem Reap, then Ho Chi Minh City, home via Singapore. Or Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong. With country eSIMs that means four purchases, four setups and four leftover data blocks that expire unused – plus the question, at every border, of whether there is Wi-Fi right now.
With a regional plan you buy once and draw from one pot. How much you need depends on what you do: maps, chats and bookings use little, video and video calls use a lot. For a short city break 1GB over 7 days or 3GB over 15 days is enough, for two to four weeks on the road 5GB or 10GB over 30 days is the right size, and for the long loop there is 20GB over 90 days.
Then there is the part you only notice on the road: after a night flight you are not standing in arrivals in front of a shop that opens at seven, you are booking your taxi while still waiting at the baggage belt.
Where the plan stops
The real limit is the country list, not the network. It stops at places that often belong to a round trip: Laos between Thailand and Vietnam, Taiwan as a side trip from Japan, Nepal after India, the Maldives after Sri Lanka. There you are offline until you reach a listed country again.
The same goes for changing planes: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Istanbul are not on the list, and that is exactly where many Asia travellers have their layover. Until the connecting flight, airport Wi-Fi is your only fallback.
And it stays a data plan: no phone number, no calls, no SMS over the network. For every app that sends you a code at sign-up you still need your own number – best to get those sign-ups done before you leave. Download maps, tickets and translations offline as well, and a dead spot stays an annoyance instead of a problem.
What this plan does not cover
The list holds 20 countries – and a few well-known destinations in the region are missing from it. Not included are Taiwan, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Brunei and Mongolia. From the Middle East only Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Israel are on the list: the plan does not apply to a stopover in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Istanbul, and that is exactly where many Asia travellers change planes.
Mainland China is included. In China, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and similar services are blocked. Whether this eSIM gets you past that depends on how your traffic is routed – we do not promise it, so better not to plan around it. Set up a VPN before you fly, since inside the country you will barely be able to install one. This does not apply in Hong Kong or Macao, which run their own networks.

Daily life in Asia runs on different apps than at home – the taxi through Grab, the messages through LINE in Japan or KakaoTalk in Korea, plus maps, delivery and payment. Download them before you leave and register with your own phone number: almost all of them send an SMS code at sign-up, and this is a data-only plan with no number of its own. Pure payment apps often stay closed to visitors altogether – GCash in the Philippines, for example, wants a Philippine number.
Grab
Taxis, motorbike rides, food and parcels in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia. The fare is fixed before you get in.
Sign-up runs through an SMS code. Create the account before you travel, using your own number – this plan has no number a code could go to.
Alipay
Paying in China: street stalls, restaurants, metro tickets and taxis nearly all run through the QR code in the app.
Sign-up needs an SMS code, and a foreign card has to be added first. Do both before you travel so you are not stuck at a street stall without a way to pay.
Naver Map
Maps, walking routes and live bus and subway times in South Korea. KakaoMap does the same job.
Google Maps is noticeably limited in South Korea, navigation most of all. Naver Map or KakaoMap will get you around better.
LINE
The messenger in Japan and Thailand. Hotels, guides, hosts and many restaurants reply there faster than by email.
Sign-up needs an SMS code sent to a real phone number, so set it up before you fly.
Careem
Ride-hailing in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Pakistan, with delivery on top in some of them.
Sign-up by SMS code. Uber also operates in Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan additionally has inDrive and Bykea.
Gojek
Indonesia's everyday app: motorbike rides, cars, food and shopping, Bali included.
Its GoPay wallet requires an Indonesian number and a local account. Many rides can be paid in cash instead.
