Set it up before you fly

After the purchase you get an email with the QR code. Scan it at home on Wi-Fi and add the eSIM to your phone — it takes a few minutes. The validity does not start yet.

2

Switch it on after landing

Whether you arrive at Tocumen (PTY) near Panama City or at David (DAV) on your way to Boquete: flight mode off, data roaming on for the Simbye line — and you are online while still in the arrivals hall.

3

Keep an eye on your data

Your phone shows how much you have used in the mobile data settings. When it runs low you top up online at any time. The eSIM stays on your phone, nothing needs to be scanned again.

Your phone picks the network on its own — you never have to choose one by hand.

Cable & Wireless Panama
Telefonica Panama
50Mbit/s

Once you land, switch on data roaming for the Simbye line and your phone registers by itself with whichever network has the stronger signal: Cable & Wireless, which trades in Panama as +Móvil, or the country's second network, which you will see locally as Tigo (formerly Movistar). There is no APN to type in. If nothing happens in the arrivals hall after a couple of minutes, flight mode off and on again fixes it almost every time; if it does not, you can turn off automatic network selection in your settings and pick one of the two networks by hand.

Coverage is strongest where most travellers actually go: Panama City with Casco Viejo, Cinta Costera, Bella Vista, Albrook and Amador, the whole run out to Tocumen airport, Colón, the Panamericana, David and the highlands around Boquete, the beaches at Río Hato and Playa Blanca, El Valle de Antón, Pedasí on the Azuero peninsula and Bocas Town on Isla Colón. It thins out beyond that: in Guna Yala, the San Blas islands, only a few islands close to the mainland get a signal, on the outer Bocas islands such as Bastimentos or the Cayos Zapatillas the signal drops away, and in the Darién or on Coiba you should not count on any connection at all. Download your maps and tickets while you are still in the city.

Why your contract from home can get expensive in Panama

With many mobile contracts Panama sits outside what you already pay for at home — whether you travel from the United States, Germany, Turkey, Brazil or Japan. Depending on your plan you are billed per megabyte, a day pass kicks in that counts even if you only opened the map app for a minute in the morning, or your data runs heavily throttled.

The real problem is not the price alone, it is that you only see it afterwards. A few voice messages, a backup starting in the background, a video playing by itself — and the bill turns up weeks later. So many people switch data off entirely and then stand at Tocumen with no connection, exactly when they need to reach the driver.

The data eSIM turns that into one fixed amount: prepaid, no contract, no registration. Nothing beyond the package you bought can be charged, and when it runs out you either top up or leave it.

Where you actually get a signal in Panama

Around Panama City coverage is solid: Casco Viejo, Cinta Costera, Bella Vista, Albrook, the Amador causeway, the road to the Miraflores visitor centre at the canal and the whole run out to Tocumen. It looks much the same along the Panamericana, in Colón, in David and the highlands around Boquete, at the beaches near Río Hato and Playa Blanca, in El Valle de Antón, in Pedasí on the Azuero peninsula and in Bocas Town on Isla Colón.

Then there are the corners where no provider can help. In Guna Yala, which most people know as San Blas, only a handful of islands near the mainland have a signal; the rest of the archipelago is offline. On the outer Bocas islands such as Bastimentos or the Cayos Zapatillas the signal falls away, in the Darién and on Coiba there is effectively nothing, and on the mountain roads around Boquete or towards Santa Catalina it keeps dropping.

The conclusion is simple: download offline maps, boarding passes and booking confirmations while you are still in the city, and plan island days as time without a network. That is not a quirk of this eSIM, it is the state of mobile coverage in those regions.

Registration: yes for a local SIM, no for this eSIM

If you buy a local prepaid SIM in an official shop in Panama, it has to be registered in your name and you need to show your passport — including at the counters in the Tocumen arrivals hall. None of that applies to this data eSIM: you buy it online, set it up before you fly, and there is no form to fill in and no queue to join on arrival.

Two things to be ready for, though. On the San Blas islands, the outer islands off Bocas del Toro and in the Darién there is no reliable network — from any provider. And you still need cash in US dollars, because plenty of small businesses take only cash or the local Yappy app, which requires a Panamanian bank account.

Daily life in Panama runs on a handful of apps — and on WhatsApp. These six are the ones that actually help while you are there. Each comes with the catch: three of them need a phone number for verification, one does not work at all without a Panamanian bank account, and for public transport your phone alone is not enough.

Uber

Uber

Runs in Panama City and at Tocumen airport. The fare is fixed before you book and you can pay by card or in cash.

At Tocumen drivers do not pick up at the curb — you walk to the signposted "Aplicaciones" zone, and the app shows you the way. Set up the account and finish the SMS verification before you fly.

inDrive

inDrive

Widely used across Panama: you name a price and drivers accept it or counter. Often cheaper than Uber, and cash is normal.

Sign-up needs a code sent by SMS. A data-only eSIM has no number, so register at home with your own phone number.

PedidosYa

PedidosYa

The country's delivery app, grown out of Panama's own Appetito24: food, groceries and pharmacy runs in Panama City and the larger towns.

Panamanian addresses are often given as a building name rather than a street number — drop the pin on the map yourself. On the islands and in small towns almost nobody delivers.

Yappy

Yappy

Panama's everyday payment app. Plenty of small shops, market stalls and drivers take Yappy instead of a card reader.

Not usable for visitors: Yappy requires an account with a Panamanian bank. Where a sign says "efectivo o Yappy" you need cash — Panama pays in US dollars.

Metro de Panamá

Metro de Panamá

Lines, timetables and card balance for the metro and Metrobus in Panama City. A branch of Line 2 runs to Aeropuerto station at Tocumen airport, and free shuttle buses take you from there to Terminals 1 and 2.

At metro gates you can simply tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard. On the Metrobus you cannot: there you need the physical Metrobus card (about 2 US dollars from a machine in a metro station), and buses do not take cash.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp

The default channel in Panama: hotels, tour operators and the boat transfers to Bocas del Toro or Guna Yala answer there faster than by email.

The eSIM has no phone number. Set WhatsApp up with your own number before the trip, because the verification code arrives as an SMS on your home SIM.
