كيف تعمل شريحة Simbye eSIM لجنوب أفريقيا؟

تصبح متصلاً في أقل من دقيقتين

1
اختر خطة بيانات eSIM

Set it up before you fly

After the purchase you get an email with a link and a QR code. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, it takes a few minutes. That does not start the validity yet. Keep the email in case you need it again.

2
اضغط على زر التثبيت

Switch it on after landing

Whether you arrive at O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg, Cape Town International, King Shaka in Durban, Kruger Mpumalanga near Mbombela or George on the Garden Route: turn on data roaming for the Simbye line. The phone finds the network itself, there is nothing to enter by hand.

3
فعّل تجوال البيانات

Validity, data, top-ups

The days start counting from your first connection in South Africa. You can see how much data is left in the Simbye app or through the link from your email. When it runs low, you top up right there – no shop, no new eSIM.

The eSIM connects as a guest to a South African network; here that runs over Telkom SA. You do not pick a network and you do not type anything in by hand: switch it on, allow data roaming for the Simbye line, done. Whether you get 4G or 5G depends on your phone and where you are – the big cities have 5G, outside them it is usually 4G. This is not a Vodacom or MTN card: the network is part of the plan and cannot be swapped.

Coverage is densest where people live: Johannesburg, Pretoria and the rest of Gauteng, Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, plus the winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and the Garden Route through George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. You are online as soon as you land at O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg or Cape Town International, and the Gautrain run from the airport via Sandton to Pretoria stays inside that well-covered metro area. Along the N1, N2 and N3 highways you have signal almost the whole way. Off those routes it gets patchy: in Kruger National Park the main camps usually have signal, the roads between them and the north of the park often do not, and in the Drakensberg, the Karoo and the Northern Cape reception can disappear for long stretches. For a safari or a road trip that means one thing: save your maps and bookings offline beforehand.

Roaming on your own contract in South Africa – why it gets expensive

What your provider charges for mobile data in South Africa is purely its own pricing: sometimes a day pass, sometimes a price per megabyte, sometimes an international add-on you have to book first. Some plans include a worldwide pack, plenty do not – reading your own price list before you fly saves you the surprise on the bill when you get home.

The second part is quieter. Many phones connect to the first available network the moment you land, before you even think about it. A map update, a few photos syncing to the cloud, and the meter is already running. With an eSIM that is set up before departure you reverse the order: data roaming off for your home number, data through the Simbye line, and you know in advance where you stand.

Where the networks reach – and where they do not

South Africa has solid mobile coverage, but it is very uneven. In Gauteng with Johannesburg and Pretoria, around Cape Town, in Durban, Gqeberha and Bloemfontein, in the winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and along the Garden Route to Plettenberg Bay you get ordinary city reception. The N1 heading north, the N2 along the coast and the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban are covered almost the whole way.

As soon as you head into open country it thins out. In Kruger National Park camps like Skukuza, Satara or Berg-en-Dal usually have signal, the roads in between and the north of the park often do not. In the Drakensberg, the Karoo, the Northern Cape and along the Wild Coast you should simply expect to be offline for hours. That is not a quirk of this plan, it is true of every network in the country, Vodacom and MTN included. So build it into your planning: download offline maps, write down addresses and booking references, and do not promise anyone that you will be reachable the whole way.

RICA: why a local SIM card costs you time at the airport

من المفيد أن تعرف

In South Africa every SIM card has to be registered under the RICA law, whether it comes from Vodacom, MTN, Telkom or Cell C. At the counter they ask for your passport and proof of where you are staying – usually a booking confirmation with a proper street address will do. The stands at O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International handle it on the spot, but it is form-filling after a long flight, and without that proof of address it gets awkward.

With an eSIM you bring from home, that step disappears: you are on the network as a guest and register nowhere. In exchange you also get no South African phone number. If you genuinely need a +27 number, for a local account or an official matter, there is no way around RICA.

التطبيقات التي تحتاجها فعلاً في جنوب أفريقيا

One thing applies to almost all of these apps: sign-up runs through an SMS code. Our eSIM carries data only and cannot receive SMS. So keep your normal SIM in the phone, or set the apps up at home while you still have signal there. WhatsApp is the default messenger in South Africa – guesthouses, guides and drivers will message you there, and it runs on data, so it works normally over the eSIM. One more app worth having: EskomSePush shows power and water outages for the suburb you are in. There has been no nationwide load shedding for a long stretch since mid-2025, but local outages still happen.

Bolt

Bolt

The most used ride app alongside Uber, and usually a bit cheaper. It runs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha and many smaller towns. Uber works there too – plenty of travellers keep both and compare the fare.

Signing up needs an SMS code. That code goes to your normal number, because the data eSIM cannot receive SMS. Best to set the app up before you travel.

Gautrain

The fast train from O.R. Tambo airport to Sandton, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The app shows departure times, your nearest station and the fares.

You cannot buy a ticket in the app. You need a Gautrain Gold Card at the station for a small issue fee and load it with a card at the machine.

MyCiTi Cape Town

MyCiTi Cape Town

The official bus app for Cape Town: routes, live arrivals, nearest stop, fare calculator. It covers the airport, the city centre, the V&A Waterfront and the Atlantic seaboard.

No ticket buying in this app either. You need a myconnect card from the kiosk at the station, and you cannot pay cash on the bus.

Checkers Sixty60

Checkers Sixty60

Grocery delivery, often within the hour in the cities. Handy for apartments, self-catering places and stocking up before a safari.

It only delivers to South African addresses, and payment needs a Visa or Mastercard with a CVV. The confirmation code at sign-up arrives by SMS on your normal number.

Latest Sightings

Latest Sightings

Real-time wildlife sightings for Kruger National Park and Pilanesberg: other visitors post where the lions, leopards or wild dogs are right now.

It only helps where there is signal, and in Kruger that is patchy, especially between camps and in the north. Download the park map offline beforehand.

Namola

Namola

South African safety app with an emergency button: you share your location, a control room calls you back and sends help. It is also listed on Cape Town's official tourism site.

The full emergency service is a paid monthly subscription. Sign-up runs through a phone number with an SMS code, so through your normal number.
