كيف تعمل شريحة Simbye eSIM لكازاخستان؟
تصبح متصلاً في أقل من دقيقتين
Order before you fly
Pick your data amount, pay, and the QR code plus an installation link arrive by email. Install the eSIM calmly at home over Wi-Fi — that does not start the clock yet.
Land in Kazakhstan
Whether you arrive in Almaty (ALA), Astana (NQZ), Shymkent (CIT), Aktau (SCO) or Atyrau (GUW): switch off airplane mode after landing and turn on data roaming for the Simbye line.
Get online
Connecting usually takes a minute or two, and only then does your time start running. If it takes longer, toggle airplane mode once, or switch from Beeline to Tele2 in the settings. There is no APN for you to enter anywhere.

Your phone picks whichever network is strongest where you are standing — there is nothing for you to set.

The eSIM can use two networks in Kazakhstan: Kar-Tel, which everyone in the country calls Beeline, and Tele2 Kazakhstan. Your phone connects to whichever carries better at that moment and switches on its own when one gets weak. There is nothing to type in, no APN either. Only if a spot refuses to work at all is it worth opening the settings: set network search to manual and pick the other network.
Both networks cover the inhabited parts of the country well. Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau, Oskemen and Turkistan have solid 4G, and parts of Almaty and Astana have 5G. Between the cities, though, Kazakhstan is very empty: the road to Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai Lakes, Altyn-Emel National Park and the mountains behind Almaty all drop out, and in the steppe desert of Mangystau around Bozjyra you should plan for no signal at all. Download the cities in 2GIS before you go and you will still find your way back without a connection.
شريحة إلكترونية أم شريحة محلية في كازاخستان؟
| المقارنة | شريحة Simbye الإلكترونية | شريحة محلية |
|---|---|---|
| ID and paperwork | None. You buy online and show nothing to anyone. | Passport at the counter, and to keep the card working beyond 30 days, a device registration with a Kazakh tax number (IIN) on top. |
| Device registration (IMEI) | Not required. You connect as a guest, and devices in roaming are exempt. | Your handset must be registered within about 30 days or the card gets blocked. |
| When it starts | Set up before departure, online one to two minutes after landing in Almaty. | Only once you reach a shop or the airport desk, with a queue and a form. |
| Language | Everything in English, in the order and in the email. | Advice at the counter is usually in Russian or Kazakh. |
| Paying | Online before the trip by card, in the shop's currency. | Cash in tenge — Kaspi QR, which locals pay with, is not open to visitors. |
| Phone number | None. Pure data plan, no calls, no SMS. | A Kazakh number is included, and with it SMS codes. |
| Topping up | Add data online any time, without going anywhere. | Credit from a machine or a kiosk, menus in Russian. |
| After the trip | The eSIM simply expires. No contract, nothing to cancel. | The card sits in a drawer, and your registration stays in the system. |
Why your home contract gets expensive here
Check your tariff before you fly. With most providers Kazakhstan sits in no inclusive zone at all and is billed per megabyte or through a daily pass. The real problem is less the individual price than the lack of clarity: you cannot tell in advance what a day of navigating Almaty, one uploaded video from the Kolsai Lakes, or a background update in a hotel Wi-Fi dead spot will cost. The bill turns up weeks later, and if the phone switched networks in between it gets murkier still.
The eSIM turns that around. You pay a fixed amount up front for a fixed amount of data, here 1, 3 or 5 GB with 7 to 30 days of validity. When it is used up you top up or you do not — nothing is added afterwards. There is no contract, no notice period, no monthly fee. You leave your home line active alongside so calls and texts still reach your old number, and simply switch data roaming off there.
How far the networks reach — and where they stop
Kar-Tel (Beeline) and Tele2 carry the inhabited parts of the country reliably. Almaty and Astana have 4G everywhere and 5G in places, and it runs just as steadily in Shymkent, Karaganda, Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau, Oskemen, Turkistan and Semey. Along the main highways and in the resorts around Burabay it works normally too.
But Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country on earth and practically empty between the cities. On the drive to Charyn Canyon, at the Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes, in Altyn-Emel National Park, up at Big Almaty Lake and above all in the steppe desert of Mangystau around Bozjyra you should expect dead zones — and no other eSIM or local card will fix that. Plan for it: download the maps in 2GIS offline, save tickets and boarding passes as screenshots, and tell someone where you are heading. On the long train routes between Almaty, Turkistan and Astana the signal comes and goes as well.
Registration rules apply to the local SIM card, not to you
Anyone using a local SIM card in Kazakhstan has to have the handset registered: the device number (IMEI) and an ID document go into a state register, and foreigners additionally need a Kazakh tax number (IIN), applied for in person at a public service centre. Skip it and the network blocks the card after roughly 30 days — and activating a new one afterwards is not straightforward.
An eSIM you buy abroad before the trip is not affected. It connects as a guest on the Kazakh networks, technically the same thing your home contract does when it roams, and devices in roaming are explicitly exempt from the registration. So there is no IIN and no trip to a government office.

التطبيقات التي تحتاجها فعلاً في كازاخستان
One thing up front that matters more here than elsewhere: this plan gives you data, but no Kazakh phone number. Anything that signs you up with an SMS code — WhatsApp, Telegram, both taxi apps — should therefore be set up at home with your own number before you fly. After that the apps run on data and never need the SMS again.
Yandex Go
This is the default taxi app here, not Uber. The price is fixed before you get in, and in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent or Karaganda a car usually turns up within minutes.
Sign-up runs on an SMS code, and with a foreign number it often only works through the sister app Yango. Set Yango up at home before you fly.
inDrive
You propose a price yourself and the driver accepts or counters. The better choice for long trips across the country, where hardly any other car shows up.
Sign-up here also runs on an SMS code. Many drivers settle in cash in tenge, so never set off without notes.
2GIS
The map app people here actually navigate with: house numbers, building entrances, opening hours, bus and metro lines. Download a city in advance and it works entirely without a connection.
-
Kaspi.kz
Almost everything in Kazakhstan is paid by Kaspi QR: in cafes, in taxis, at market stalls. For locals the app replaces the bank, the transfer and the wallet.
As a visitor you cannot get in. Kaspi requires a Kazakh phone number, a Kazakh tax number (IIN) and an account opened locally. Carry cash in tenge; some Kaspi QR codes now also take international wallets through Alipay+.
ONAY
Buses and the metro in Almaty. You create a virtual card in the app, top it up with Visa or Mastercard and hold the QR code to the gate.
Astana is not included — the app covers Almaty, Karaganda, Taldykorgan, Oskemen and a few other cities. If the card payment refuses to go through, buy a physical Onay card at the metro counter.
Wolt
Food and grocery delivery in Almaty and Astana. English interface available, foreign credit cards usually work, and delivery rarely takes long.
Those two cities only. Glovo and the Kazakh service Chocofood deliver as well, but their apps run mostly in Russian.
