Which networks will you be on in Cambodia?

There is no operator to pick in Cambodia: the line has Metfone and Smart behind it, and the phone registers on whichever it finds first. Arrive at Phnom Penh's airport or Siem Reap–Angkor and you are typically online while you are still walking to the visa desk. Nothing waits for you in the settings — no APN to enter, no profile to select, no app that has to be opened before data works. If the signal bar stays stubbornly empty, switch airplane mode on, count to ten, and switch it off again; the phone will search the network fresh and usually latches on straight away. Should that not do it, turn off automatic network selection and pick Metfone or Smart manually from the list — whichever one you were not on.
Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang and the coast around Sihanoukville, Kampot and Kep are well covered, and so is the whole Angkor park — signal holds at Ta Prohm and out at Banteay Srei. The gaps are where you would expect them. The boat crossings to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem drop out mid-channel, and on the quieter beaches of Samloem — Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach among them — you should plan to be offline. Inland it thins in the Cardamom Mountains, on the red roads through Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, and in Virachey National Park. Remote temple runs to Preah Vihear and Koh Ker have long quiet stretches, as do the floating villages far out on the Tonlé Sap.

How much data do you need in Cambodia?

Do you have to register your phone's IMEI in Cambodia?
There is a real rule behind the rumour. Sub-Decree No. 41, issued on 3 February 2023, set up Cambodia's Equipment Identity Registration System, a national database that checks the IMEI — the serial number of every SIM-capable device — before an operator connects it to the network. It exists to keep fake, stolen and illegally imported handsets off Cambodian networks. The same sub-decree writes in the carve-out for visitors: equipment belonging to tourists or travellers staying no more than sixty days does not have to be registered.
So you land, switch the profile on, and nothing is asked of you — no counter, no form, no local subscriber file, because the eSIM roams rather than joining a Cambodian operator's books. Two honest limits: the visitor exemption is tied to a short stay, and you get no Khmer number, so apps that text a +855 code to sign you up stay out of reach.
