How does Simbye eSIM work for the Åland Islands?
Get connected in under 2 minutes
Set it up at home
Buy the plan and an email lands in your inbox with an install link. One tap on it and the eSIM is set — it sits quietly next to your normal SIM in the phone. Nothing starts counting yet, so you can do this days before the ferry or flight.
One switch on arrival
In Mariehamn or Godby you only switch on data roaming for the Simbye line and you are set. The phone latches onto the Ålcom network without any help from you. Everything else — APN, profile, number — was already handled when you installed the eSIM back at home.
Keep your number, top up anytime
Your everyday number stays live, since your own SIM remains in its slot — calls and messages arrive as always while Simbye handles the data. Need more during the island days? A few taps in the app and extra data is on the line, without any second setup.

Which networks will you be on in the Åland Islands?
Your phone rides the Ålcom network across the archipelago, from Mariehamn's harbour out to the small islands in the east.
You are not signing anything with a local shop and you are not tied to a counter at the ferry terminal. Step off the boat at Mariehamn's West Harbour, or land at the little airport just north of town, and the line is already looking for signal while you are still finding your bag. There is no APN to type in, no profile to import, no app to open first — the eSIM you installed at home carries all of that. If the bars stay empty for a while after you arrive, put the phone into flight mode for ten seconds and let it back out; that forces a fresh search. Still nothing? Turn off automatic network selection in your mobile settings and choose Ålcom by hand.
Around Mariehamn, Jomala and Godby you will barely think about coverage — the towns, the harbours and the main road west to Eckerö and Storby all behave. Sund and Saltvik, Kastelholm castle, the Bomarsund ruins and the cycle paths through Finström are fine too. It gets thinner the further east you go. The outer archipelago — Föglö, Sottunga, Kumlinge, Kökar and Brändö — is a scatter of small islands with long stretches of open water between them, and on the inter-island ferries the signal tends to come and go with the crossing rather than hold steady. The same is true out on the rocks at Kobba Klintar, on the forest tracks up in Geta, and on the water if you take a boat away from the main routes. Save your ferry timetable offline before you head out that way.
eSIM or a local SIM card in the Åland Islands?
For a short stay on Åland the eSIM wins: you arrive already online, skip the shop hunt in Mariehamn and keep your own number — the local SIM only adds an Åland number.
| Compared | Simbye eSIM | Local SIM card |
|---|---|---|
| When you're online | Installed at home; the line registers as your ferry docks in Mariehamn. | You stay offline until you find an open shop in Mariehamn. |
| ID and registration | Nothing to register and nothing to show; you set it up at home. | There is no prepaid registration, but you still turn up in person. |
| Where you get it | Ordered online, in your own language, before you leave home. | Ålcom shops and kiosks in Mariehamn; very little out on the outer islands. |
| Paying | Card or PayPal at home, in a checkout you can actually read. | Cash or card at the counter, with the receipt printed in Swedish. |
| Your own number | Your usual SIM stays in, so calls and bank codes still reach you. | You swap your SIM out, and your home number goes quiet. |
| Topping up | Top up from the app or the site whenever your data runs low. | Buy a voucher in a shop, then work through a Swedish menu. |
| Reception | Runs on Ålcom, the island network, from Mariehamn out to the ferry routes. | The same Ålcom masts — only the paperwork in front of them differs. |
| A local phone number | No Åland number with this data plan; WhatsApp calls still work fine. | You get an Åland number, useful if a local host rings back. |
How much data do you need in the Åland Islands?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
Will the eSIM work on the ferry crossing to Åland?
Åland is reached by ship, and that is where most connection worries start. Phones hold on to land masts for a while, but on the Baltic crossings from Stockholm, Turku or Helsinki the signal thins out once you are well offshore and can drop away in the middle of the route. What some ships offer instead is an onboard maritime network — a separate service at sea, not one of the land networks a travel plan is built on.
Your data comes back as soon as you are within reach of Åland's masts, and on the islands you ride Ålcom — steady in Mariehamn, Jomala, Godby and Eckerö and along the main roads. Two honest limits: the outer archipelago around Kökar, Sottunga and Föglö is thinner, and the crossing itself is not covered. Download your tickets and maps before you sail.
