How does Simbye eSIM work for Azerbaijan?
Set it up at home
After your purchase you get an email with a link and a QR code. Install the eSIM calmly over Wi-Fi before you fly. The validity does not start yet, it begins with your first connection inside Azerbaijan.
Arrive in Azerbaijan
Most people land at Heydar Aliyev Airport in Baku; there are also airports in Gəncə, Qəbələ, Naxçıvan and Lənkəran. Switch off airplane mode after landing and the eSIM registers on the network.
Turn on data roaming
Set the Simbye line as your mobile data connection and switch data roaming on for it. That is part of using an eSIM from abroad and costs nothing extra. You do not need to enter an APN.
Check Device Compatibility
Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing
Which networks will you be on in Azerbaijan?
You travel as a roaming guest on the Azercell and Bakcell networks, and your phone registers itself the moment you switch on in Baku.
The Simbye eSIM uses 2 networks in Azerbaijan: Azercell · Bakcell.

There is nothing to set up. The moment you land at Heydər Əliyev Airport in Baku and switch off airplane mode, your phone looks for one of the two networks and registers on it. The only thing that matters is that data roaming is switched on for the Simbye line, which is completely normal for an eSIM from abroad and does not cost you anything extra. You never have to type in an APN. If reception is poor in one spot, you can turn off automatic network selection in your settings and switch between Azercell and Bakcell by hand. In the mountains in particular, one of the two can have a signal where the other does not.
Baku and the Abşeron peninsula with Sumqayıt are covered throughout, as are the roads towards Qobustan, to Gəncə in the west and to Lənkəran in the south. In the northern destinations too – Quba, Şəki, Qəbələ and the ski areas Şahdağ and Tufandağ – you normally have reception inside the towns themselves. It gets thinner on the mountain passes and in the villages of the Greater Caucasus, for example on the way to Xınalıq, where the signal can disappear for stretches at a time. The eSIM works in the Naxçıvan exclave as well. This eSIM connects over 4G/LTE.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Azerbaijan?
The eSIM saves you the paperwork in Azerbaijan: no passport at a counter, no IMEI device registration that can block your phone, and you land in Baku already online — a local SIM does give you an Azerbaijani number, though.
| Feature | Local SIM card | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Before departure, via the link or QR code in your email | Only after landing, at a counter in the arrivals hall |
| ID | Not needed, there is nothing to sign up for | Your passport is required for registration |
| Phone registration (IMEI) | Not applicable, you travel as a roaming guest | Mandatory within 30 days, otherwise the device is blocked |
| Payment | Prepaid in your own currency, before the trip | In manat (AZN) on site, often cash only at the counter |
| Phone number | None, this is a data-only plan | An Azerbaijani number is included |
| Time on arrival | None, you are online as you step off the plane in Baku | Queue and paperwork at the airport |
| Data and validity | 1 to 10 GB, 7 to 30 days, top up online at any time | Bundles set by the operator, credit in a shop or a local app |
| Home number | Stays active, you remain reachable for calls and SMS | Only with a second SIM slot or a second phone |
For most travelers the eSIM is the simpler choice: set up before departure, no queuing on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions about Azerbaijan eSIM
Data, calls, real phone numbers, top-ups and setup — everything you need to know before you buy a Simbye eSIM.
You can buy an eSIM for Azerbaijan online, before you fly. The link and the QR code arrive by email, and you install the eSIM at home without the validity starting. That way you walk past every counter at Baku airport, and you need no ID and no contract.
This is both, an Azercell eSIM and a Bakcell eSIM. Your phone registers on Azercell or Bakcell automatically, and you can switch by hand in your network settings at any time — in the mountains one of the two often has a signal where the other does not.
You only need to register your phone in Azerbaijan if you use an Azerbaijani SIM card. In that case the device number has to be registered within 30 days, otherwise the phone is blocked inside the country. Visitors roaming on a foreign operator's SIM are explicitly exempt, and that is exactly how this eSIM works.
No, no Azerbaijani phone number here. This is a data-only plan without a local number. Your existing number stays active on your normal SIM and people can still reach you on it.
You can choose how much data and how many days: 1 to 10 GB, valid for 7 to 30 days. If the allowance runs short you top up online at any time — the eSIM already on your phone simply stays where it is, so you never need a second one.
If you've landed in Baku with no signal, try three things in order: switch on data roaming for the Simbye line, select it as your mobile data connection, and turn airplane mode on and off again. If that does not help, restart your phone once and then pick the network by hand in your settings, trying Azercell and Bakcell one after the other. You never need to enter an APN.
Yes, the eSIM does work in Naxçıvan, using the same networks there. In mountain towns such as Şəki, Qəbələ and Quba, and in the ski areas Şahdağ and Tufandağ, you normally have reception. On mountain passes and in remote villages like Xınalıq the signal can disappear entirely, so download your map offline before you head up.
Yes: an eSIM for Azerbaijan is a data profile connecting to local networks like a plastic SIM on landing. The mobile networks in Baku and across the rest of the country carry eSIM data exactly like a plastic SIM, so nothing is missing. You install the profile at home and switch it on when you arrive.
An eSIM for Azerbaijan starts at 3,95€, but the final price depends on the data amount and number of days you choose - see the table above for every option. A short city break in Baku needs far less data than a two-week road trip, so you only pay for the size you pick.
The eSIM that's best for Azerbaijan depends on where you travel, how much data you need and how long you stay. This one runs on Azercell and Bakcell over 4G, covering Baku, the Absheron peninsula, Ganja, Lankaran, Quba and Sheki, and it works in Nakhchivan too. It is data only, without a local number, and the Greater Caucasus passes towards Khinalug can go quiet whatever you buy.
