Along the coast, where almost the whole country lives, it is straightforward: Bandar Seri Begawan, the Kampong Ayer water village, Gadong, Jerudong, Muara and the beaches, and westwards Tutong, Seria and Kuala Belait on the coastal highway. Bangar in Temburong is fine too, and so is the drive over the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien bridge across Brunei Bay. Inland is a different story. Once you turn up the Temburong river by longboat towards Batang Duri and Ulu Temburong National Park, the rainforest and the ridges take over and the signal goes with them — do not count on one at the canopy walkway. The same holds in the Belait interior around Labi and Sukang, in the Andulau and Batu Apoi forest, and out on the mangrove creeks and Tasek Merimbun.

Do I have to register a SIM with my passport in Brunei?
Brunei really does police who holds a mobile line. Under the Code of Practice for prepaid SIM registration issued by the regulator AITI, in force since 4 September 2024, every prepaid SIM sold in the country has to be tied to a named person before it works. A visitor buying one at a counter shows a valid passport; residents show their identity card. The rule is aimed at lines issued by Brunei's own providers.
That counter is one you never reach. This eSIM is issued outside Brunei and roams onto a Bruneian host network, so there is no local subscription to put your name on and no shop visit after landing. What you give up is a Bruneian +673 number: calls and texts run through your own line or through apps, and anything that insists on a local number stays out of reach.
