Which networks will you be on in Croatia?
Your phone connects to Hrvatski Telekom, A1 or Telemach on its own, and there is nothing for you to set up.

You do not pick a network yourself. The moment you turn off airplane mode in Croatia, your phone searches and connects to one of the country's three networks: Hrvatski Telekom, A1 (formerly VIPnet) or Telemach (formerly Tele2). If reception is poor in one spot, go into your mobile settings, switch network selection from automatic to manual and try another operator. Only two things matter: data roaming has to be switched on for the Simbye line, and your phone needs 4G or 5G, because the old 3G networks in Croatia are being switched off.
Along the Adriatic coast, on the motorways and in the cities, coverage is dense: Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar, Šibenik, Dubrovnik and Pula, plus the holiday regions of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia and the big islands Krk, Pag, Brač, Hvar and Korčula. It thins out inland and in the mountains: the Velebit range, Gorski kotar, parts of Lika, the canyons at Plitvice and Krka, the long motorway tunnels Sveti Rok and Mala Kapela, and small, far-out islands such as Vis, Lastovo or the Kornati. On the open sea between two islands the connection almost always drops. So download maps, tickets and the ferry timetable for offline use before you set off.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Croatia?
In Croatia the eSIM wins: it is set up at home and your own number stays on, while a card from Hrvatski Telekom or A1 means a counter and your passport — but it does bring a Croatian number.

What mobile data in Croatia costs on your home contract
Every provider bills roaming differently: some sell a day pass, some charge per megabyte, and even plans that include data abroad usually cap how much you get. Once you hit that cap you are throttled or every further gigabyte costs extra, and that lands exactly when you are standing mid-holiday with no map, no ferry timetable and no booking confirmation.
This eSIM turns that around. You know what you are getting before you fly: prepaid, with no contract, no registration, no deposit and nothing that keeps running once you are home. The QR code arrives by email, you set it up in peace on your Wi-Fi at home, and nothing counts down until you first connect to a Croatian network.
Your usual number stays active on your normal SIM the whole time, so calls, bank codes and verification texts still reach you while the data runs over the Croatian line. If your allowance runs low, you top up online: the same eSIM stays in the phone and there is no second QR code to scan.
Where the networks reach, and where they do not
Croatia has three mobile networks: Hrvatski Telekom, A1 and Telemach. All three cover the Adriatic coast, the A1 motorway between Zagreb, Zadar, Split and Ploče and the cities with 4G, and the urban areas and larger coastal towns with 5G as well. For navigation, maps, messaging and video calls that is enough there without a second thought.
Away from those corridors it gets patchy. The Velebit range, Gorski kotar, parts of Lika and the canyons at Plitvice and Krka have dead spots, as do the long motorway tunnels. On small, far-out islands such as Vis, Lastovo, Susak or in the Kornati, reception depends on exactly where you are standing, and on the crossing between two islands it almost always drops.
If you are planning a hike in a national park or a boat trip, download the map, your ticket and the return ferry timetable first. That goes double for Plitvice: entry tickets are tied to a time slot, and your phone should be able to show the proof with no signal at all.
How much data do you need in Croatia?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
Data only, please read this before you buy
This plan does not give you a Croatian phone number. You cannot make calls or receive texts over the Croatian network, the eSIM carries mobile data and nothing else. Your usual number stays active and reachable on your normal SIM, and the eSIM sits alongside it as a second line.
Two things follow from that. Paying for parking by text message, standard in many Croatian towns, only works from a Croatian number, so use a parking app such as PayDo or bmove instead. And confirmation codes from banks or apps still arrive on your home number, not on the eSIM. Validity only starts with your first connection in Croatia, so you can set everything up at home.
