Which networks will you be on in the Dominican Republic?

There is no operator to choose. The line runs on Altice and your phone finds it by itself — no APN to type, no profile to install, no app to open before it works. Land at Punta Cana, at Las Américas outside Santo Domingo or at Puerto Plata, switch on data roaming for the Simbye line, and the bars are usually up before you reach the immigration hall. If nothing appears after a couple of minutes, put the phone into airplane mode, wait ten seconds and turn it back off — that clears most cases. If it is still blank, go into the network settings, switch off automatic selection and pick the Dominican network from the list by hand.
Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana, Puerto Plata and the whole resort strip from Bávaro to Punta Cana are dependable, and so are Sosúa, Cabarete, Las Terrenas and Samaná town. The main roads carry well — the Autopista del Coral out to the east coast, the DR-1 up to Santiago, the coastal road along the north. It thins in the mountains and the far southwest. The climb to Jarabacoa and Constanza, the Valle Nuevo plateau and the tracks toward Pico Duarte lose it in the valleys, and so do the mangrove channels of Los Haitises, the Sierra de Bahoruco and the run past Pedernales down to Bahía de las Águilas and the Jaragua park. Boat trips count too: whale watching out in Samaná Bay or the crossing to Cayo Levantado is offline time, so save your map before you set off.
eSIM or a local SIM card in the Dominican Republic?
Take the eSIM: it is usually running before you reach immigration, needs no passport at a counter and no pesos in cash. The one thing it cannot give you is a Dominican number for local calls.

Dominican prepaid lines had to be validated — does that hit your eSIM?
In 2025 the Dominican regulator INDOTEL ordered every prepaid mobile line in the country to be matched to a real person. More than eight million lines had to be validated with a cédula, a passport or a residence card, and Resolution 073-2025 pushed the final window to the end of September: Claro's customers had until 28 September 2025, Altice's until 29 September. Miss it and the line is suspended, then cut off. Buying a local card now means handing over your passport at the counter.
That order applies to Dominican prepaid lines, and your eSIM is not one. It roams onto Altice as a visiting profile, so there is nothing to validate and no deadline hanging over it. The catch is the same one every roaming profile has: no Dominican number. A guide in Punta Cana or Samaná cannot call you back on a local line — WhatsApp does the job.
