Once you land, your phone connects to a Finnish network on its own – Elisa, DNA or Telia. If one network drops out, your phone can move to another one; that can take a few minutes, and switching airplane mode on and off usually speeds it up. You do two things once: move mobile data to the new line and switch on data roaming.
In Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku and Oulu you normally get 5G, and in inhabited areas it is mostly 4G. Rovaniemi, Kemi, Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä and Inari are well covered too, as is the main north-south road through Lapland and the rail corridor from Helsinki via Oulu to Rovaniemi. It gets thin away from the roads: deep inside Urho Kekkonen National Park or the Pallas-Yllästunturi area the signal can disappear completely, and so it can in the archipelago off Turku and on some ferry routes.
