Which networks will you be on in Gibraltar?
Your eSIM runs on the GibTel network in Gibraltar - there is nothing to pick, your phone connects on its own when you arrive.
You do not choose a network. As soon as you arrive in Gibraltar with data roaming switched on for the new line, your phone finds the GibTel network and you are online - in town just as much as at North Front airport. There is one quirk, though: Gibraltar is under seven square kilometres, and radio signals do not respect borders. Close to the frontier, along the east side and up on the Rock, your phone can latch onto a Spanish network instead. Your data then stops, because this plan is valid in Gibraltar only. The fix takes ten seconds: in your mobile network settings, switch network selection from automatic to manual and pick GibTel or Gibtelecom. Leave network selection on manual while you are near the frontier - on automatic your phone can drift back onto the Spanish network.
In town the coverage is consistently good: Main Street, Grand Casemates Square, Irish Town, Ocean Village and Marina Bay, Queensway Quay, the frontier crossing to La Línea de la Concepción, the airport, and the beaches at Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay. Europa Point at the southern tip and the road up to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve are covered as well. Where it stops is inside the Rock itself: in St. Michael's Cave, in the Great Siege Tunnels and in the Second World War tunnels there are hundreds of metres of limestone above you, and no operator has a signal there - that is not a quirk of this plan. If you are spending the whole day up top, save your map offline while you are still down in town.

Why your home contract gets expensive here
Gibraltar is a mobile territory of its own. Your operator at home has a separate price list for it, and that list is rarely where you go looking. Some tariffs bill the Rock like a long-haul destination, some fold it into a travel bundle, others leave it out altogether. What they have in common is that you find out afterwards.
On top of that there is a trap you will hardly meet anywhere else. The Rock has water on three sides and Spain on the fourth, and masts do not respect borders. Standing in La Línea de la Concepción, your phone can latch onto a Gibraltar mast and bill you for roaming without you ever crossing the frontier. It happens the other way round too, with phones in Gibraltar hanging off a Spanish mast. A fixed prepaid plan for the days you are there takes the guesswork out: you pay an amount you know in advance and simply leave your home contract's data switched off.
That matters most for the many visitors who come over from the Costa del Sol for a single day. Walking into a shop is not worth it for a few hours, but a small data bundle is.
Where the network reaches - and where it does not
Gibraltar is under seven square kilometres, and almost all of it is either built up or nature reserve, so the network sits densely. In town - Main Street, Grand Casemates Square, Irish Town, Ocean Village, Marina Bay and Queensway Quay - you have signal throughout, and the same goes for the frontier crossing, North Front airport and the beaches at Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay and Sandy Bay.
Up on the Upper Rock it is mixed. On the viewing terraces at the cable car station, among the macaques at the Apes' Den and out on the Windsor Suspension Bridge you are usually online. The moment you go inside the Rock, it stops: in St. Michael's Cave, in the Great Siege Tunnels and in the Second World War tunnels there are hundreds of metres of limestone above your head. That is not a weakness of this plan, it is physics - no operator has a signal in there. If you are spending the day at the top, load your map and your tickets down in town first.
And once more, the frontier point: on the north side and along the east coast your phone can slip onto a Spanish network. Your data then stops even though you are in the middle of Gibraltar. Switch network selection to manual, pick GibTel, and you are back.
How much data do you need in Gibraltar?
