Which networks will you be on in Indonesia?

The eSIM runs on Telkomsel, Indosat and XL Axiata. There is nothing to set up: once you land in Indonesia and switch data roaming on for the eSIM, your phone finds a network by itself. You never have to type in an APN by hand. If reception is weak somewhere, go into your mobile network settings, switch network search from automatic to manual and pick another network – that usually helps more than restarting the phone.
On Bali, coverage is consistently good in Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Ubud and Uluwatu, while 5G so far only exists in parts of Denpasar and in Jakarta. On Java – Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Surabaya – as well as in Medan, Makassar and on Lombok, the network is stable too. It thins out on Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands, on the boat crossings to get there, in the mountains around Bromo and Ijen, and on Flores, in Labuan Bajo and in Raja Ampat. In those places Telkomsel usually reaches further than Indosat and XL Axiata.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Indonesia?
Take the eSIM to Indonesia. A local card is registered with a face scan and asks foreigners for a passport plus a residence permit, which most visitors simply do not have, while the eSIM installs at home and works on arrival.

Why roaming on your home contract gets expensive in Indonesia
Indonesia sits in the most expensive roaming zone of almost every mobile contract in the world. Wherever your contract comes from, Southeast Asia is rarely part of the included data, and the terms are buried in a table you have to go looking for.
Two billing models are common. Either you buy a daily pass that counts every started day, even if you only opened a map for a minute. Or you are charged per megabyte, and then the meter keeps running when nothing more than background photo uploads or app updates are happening. Both are worth reading in your own tariff once before you fly.
A local data eSIM turns that around. You buy it prepaid, with no contract and no registration, and your home contract stays active in the phone for calls and SMS codes without any data going through it. The only thing that matters is the setting: data roaming off for your home SIM, on for the eSIM. That is exactly why many travellers run both side by side instead of queueing for a local card on arrival.
Where the networks actually reach
Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, and the network behaves accordingly. In Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Ubud and Uluwatu you have reception throughout, and the same goes for Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Makassar. 5G is still the exception and limited to parts of Jakarta and Denpasar, so day to day you will be on 4G.
It gets weaker as soon as you leave the main routes. On Nusa Penida reception depends heavily on exactly where you are, and on the Gili Islands and the boat crossings out there the connection drops more often. The same applies to the early climbs at Bromo and Ijen, to parts of Flores around Labuan Bajo, and to Raja Ampat, where you should plan for whole days without a signal. On Sumatra the coast is well covered, while the interior around Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba is noticeably worse.
In practice that means: download offline maps in your navigation app, take screenshots of boarding passes, hotel addresses and your tourist levy QR code, and order your ride from a café with WiFi rather than from the beach. If you have bars but nothing loads, switch network search from automatic to manual once and work through Telkomsel, Indosat and XL Axiata one by one.
How much data do you need in Indonesia?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
SIM registration in Indonesia – and why it does not apply here
Since 2026, Indonesian prepaid cards only work after registration. The basis is Regulation No. 7 of 2026 from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. Locals register with their national ID number and are captured biometrically, while foreigners present their passport. It cannot be done online – you have to go in person to a counter or an operator's shop. Anyone buying a local card at the airport handles it right there.
This eSIM, by contrast, is bought online and activated by you with a QR code. Your phone then runs on the Indonesian networks as a device from abroad. That is also why the IMEI registration, which becomes a topic when using a local card for longer stays, does not come up here. No counter, no queue, no passport photo.
