How does Simbye eSIM work for Latvia?
Set it up before you fly
Pick a plan, buy it, and the QR code arrives by email. Scan it at home on Wi-Fi and then leave the new line switched off for now. Installed is installed — that alone does not start the clock.
Arrive in Latvia
Whether you land at Riga (RIX), arrive by ferry in Riga or Ventspils, or come by coach from Tallinn or Vilnius: once you are in the country, switch the Simbye line on and turn data roaming on for it. After a minute or two LMT, Tele2 or Bite appears on your screen, and that is when your plan starts running.
Stay online
Set the Simbye line as your data connection and keep your usual number active for calls and texts — but with data roaming switched off on that one. When your data runs low you top up online; the eSIM stays installed and there is nothing to scan again.
Check Device Compatibility
Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing

There is nothing to choose. The eSIM is cleared for the Latvian networks — LMT, Tele2 and Bite — and your phone picks one of them automatically when it connects. Which one it takes is its own decision; you cannot pin it to a particular network. Only if nothing at all comes through after landing is it worth opening the settings: switch network search from automatic to manual, pick one of the three by hand, then set it back to automatic. You never have to enter an APN.
In Riga you have reception almost everywhere, from the airport through the Old Town out to the suburbs. The networks are built out to 5G across much of the city; whether your connection runs on 5G or 4G depends on the network and your phone. Jūrmala, Jelgava, Valmiera, Liepāja, Ventspils, Daugavpils and Rēzekne are covered just as well, and so are the main roads, above all the Via Baltica towards Tallinn and Vilnius. It thins out where almost nobody lives: in the forests and bogs of the Ķemeri and Gauja national parks, on the coast around Cape Kolka, and between the lakes of eastern Latgale. Enough for maps, messages and music nearly everywhere — not always enough for a video call deep in the woods.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Latvia?
Even in Latvia, where nothing has to be registered, the eSIM still saves you the trip: you scan the code before you fly and land online in Riga, with your own number still ringing beside it.
| Feature | Local SIM card | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Before you fly: scan the QR code from the email, done | After arrival: find a shop or kiosk, swap the card |
| ID and registration | Not needed, you order online | Latvia currently requires no registration, but you still have to go to the shop in person |
| When you are online | Straight after landing in Riga | Only once a shop or kiosk is open |
| Your existing number | Stays active, WhatsApp and calls keep working | Goes offline if your phone has only one SIM slot |
| Calls and SMS | Not included, calls go through WhatsApp and similar | Latvian number included, calls and texts work normally |
| Paying | Online with your own card before you leave | On the spot in euros, cash or card |
| Topping up | Any time online, the eSIM stays installed | Top up in a shop, in an app or online |
| If something goes wrong | Support by email, new access by link | Back to the shop with your receipt |
For most travelers the eSIM is the simpler choice: set up before departure, no queuing on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions about Latvia eSIM
Data, calls, real phone numbers, top-ups and setup — everything you need to know before you buy a Simbye eSIM.
Yes, you're online right after landing in Riga if you installed the eSIM beforehand. At the airport you switch the line on, turn data roaming on for it, and you are connected within a minute or two. The scanning itself needs Wi-Fi, so do that before you fly.
No, you can't make calls or receive SMS with it. This is a pure data plan with no Latvian phone number, and the network carries neither calls nor texts. You can still call through WhatsApp, FaceTime or Signal, which run on data. Verification texts from banks or apps keep going to your own number.
No, no need to register or show ID. Latvia requires no registration for this eSIM, there is no form to fill in and no passport to show. All you need is a phone that supports eSIM and is not locked to one operator.
The network you'll be on in Latvia is LMT, Tele2 or Bite. Your phone decides for itself which of the three it takes when it connects; you cannot pin it to one. There is nothing for you to set.
No, this plan doesn't also work in Estonia or Lithuania. If your trip continues across the border to Tallinn or Vilnius, take an eSIM that covers the whole region instead.
You get an eSIM for Latvia online and install it before you leave. Choose your data size on this page, pay, and the QR code arrives by email in minutes. Scan it over Wi-Fi at home, then switch the line on when you land in Riga, with no shop, no paperwork and no waiting at the airport.
An eSIM for Latvia is a digital line that connects on local networks, just like a plastic SIM. You get 4G and 5G data in Riga, Jurmala, Liepaja and along the main roads, so navigation, messaging and mobile tickets work from the moment you arrive and switch the line on.
An eSIM for Latvia starts at 1,95€; the final amount depends on the data size and the number of days you pick, and the table above lists every option with its current price. A long weekend in Riga needs a small bundle, while a longer Baltic trip is worth a bigger one.
How much data you need for Latvia comes down to roughly 250 to 400 MB a day for maps, messengers and tickets in Riga. Add photo uploads and social and you are near 1 GB. Streaming or tethering a laptop costs the real data, 2 to 3 GB daily. A long weekend in Riga and Jūrmala usually fits inside 3 GB; two weeks touring the country lands closer to 10 GB.
The eSIM that's best for Latvia depends on where you go, how much data you need and how long you stay. This eSIM is cleared for LMT, Tele2 and Bite, and your phone picks one by itself, which covers Riga, Jūrmala, the larger towns and the Via Baltica. Forests, bogs and the Latgale lakes stay thinner on any network. Data only, no Latvian number.
