How does Simbye eSIM work for Lithuania?

Get connected in under 2 minutes

1
Choose eSIM data plan

Pick a plan and pay

Choose the amount of data that fits your trip: 1 GB covers a long weekend of maps and messaging, while 10 or 20 GB suits you if you work on the road or keep a hotspot running. The email with your link and QR code arrives right after payment.

2
Tap Install Button

Set it up at home

Install the eSIM calmly over Wi-Fi: tap the link or scan the QR code, done. That does not start the clock – the validity period begins with your first connection in Lithuania. So after landing at Vilnius (VNO), Kaunas (KUN) or Palanga (PLQ) there is nothing left to install.

3
Enable data roaming

Switch it on after landing

Turn off airplane mode, switch on data roaming for the Simbye line – that is how it is meant to work and costs nothing extra – and turn off mobile data on your main line. A few seconds later one of the Lithuanian networks appears in your status bar – shown as Telia, Omnitel, Bitė or Tele2, depending on the phone.

Check Device Compatibility

Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing

Which networks will you be on in Lithuania?

In Lithuania your eSIM picks the network on its own – there is nothing for you to set.

Omnitel (Telia) Lithuania
Bite Lithuania
Tele2 Lithuania
186Mbit/s
Typical download

Half of all mobile speed tests in the country come out above this, half below. Speedtest Global Index, July 2026. There are no separate figures per network for this country.

You do not pick a network. The eSIM is cleared for Telia (formerly Omnitel), Bitė and Tele2 at the same time, and your phone takes whichever has the best signal. When the signal drops, it moves on by itself. One thing matters: Lithuania's 3G networks are switched off – Telia back in 2022, Tele2 and Bitė in 2025. Your phone has to support 4G or 5G; a 3G-only device will no longer get a data connection there.

Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys are densely covered and have 5G. On the coast in Palanga and Šventoji, and in the resort villages of Nida and Juodkrantė on the Curonian Spit, you get a normal signal; in the forested stretches and among the dunes of the Spit it can drop out briefly. The same goes for the Aukštaitija and Dzūkija national parks, the forests around Druskininkai and the small country roads between Anykščiai and Zarasai. Trakai, the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai and the shores of the Curonian Lagoon are unproblematic.

eSIM or a local SIM card in Lithuania?

Lithuania makes the case for the eSIM by itself: since 2025 a local prepaid card has to be registered to you, and its menus and top-ups arrive in Lithuanian, while your eSIM is set up in English at home.

When a separate data eSIM makes sense for Lithuania

Many people flying to Vilnius already have data for Lithuania in their contract. For them this eSIM is not a replacement but a second line: on a work phone it keeps business and private use cleanly apart, without putting a foreign card into a company device.

The second case is mundane and happens to almost everyone once: your data allowance runs out halfway through the trip. Instead of buying an add-on and reading tariff terms, you switch on a second line with a clear amount of data, prepaid and without a contract. When it runs out you top up, or you don't – nothing is charged and nothing quietly renews.

And travellers coming from the US, Turkey, Brazil, Japan or India usually have no Lithuania coverage in their home plan at all. Then you pay per megabyte, often without knowing what the bill will say at the end of the month. A prepaid data eSIM costs what it costs, and that is the end of it.

Where you are actually online in Lithuania

Lithuania is compact, and the routes travellers take are well covered. In Vilnius Old Town, in Užupis, on the castle island of Trakai, in the new town of Kaunas and along the Klaipėda waterfront you have continuous signal, with 5G in the cities. On the motorway between Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda the connection holds and navigation does not cut out.

Away from that it gets thinner. In the forests of Aukštaitija National Park, around the lakes near Ignalina, in the pine woods around Druskininkai and on the Curonian Spit between Smiltynė and Nida, the signal can disappear for stretches. That is the landscape, not the eSIM – a Lithuanian contract has the same gaps there. If you are heading onto the Spit or planning a hike, download the map and route offline first.

One detail for the border regions: Nida sits only a few kilometres from the Russian border, and the east of the country borders Belarus. Very close to a border your phone can latch onto a network on the other side, where your plan does not apply. If data stalls although the bars look fine, switch network selection from Automatic to manual for a moment and pick Telia, Bitė or Tele2.

The registration rule applies to Lithuanian cards – not to your eSIM

Good to know

Since January 2025, Lithuanian operators may only issue prepaid cards to people who provide a name, address and identity document details; travellers from abroad identify with a photo of their ID or in a store. Your Simbye eSIM is not a Lithuanian prepaid card – it connects to the Telia, Bitė and Tele2 networks as a guest. There is nothing to register and nothing to show.

Two things are still worth knowing. Lithuania's 3G networks are switched off, so your phone needs 4G or 5G. And very close to the borders – Nida is a few kilometres from Russia, and the east borders Belarus – your phone can latch onto a network on the other side, where your plan does not apply. If that happens, open the network search and pick a Lithuanian network by hand.
