Set it up at home

Which networks will you be on in Malta?
You never pick a network — the eSIM automatically takes whichever one carries best where you are.

Once you land, your phone picks one of Malta's three operators by itself: GO, Melita or Vodafone Malta, which trades as Epic today. If it loses the network somewhere, it looks for another one by itself. You select nothing, unlock nothing and type in no APN. If something ever stalls, switch automatic network selection off and on again in your network settings — that is the only manual step you will ever need.
Malta is barely 27 kilometres long and densely populated, so the masts stand close together. You have steady reception in Valletta and the Three Cities, in Sliema, St. Julian's and Paceville, in Buġibba, Qawra, St. Paul's Bay, Mellieħa, Mdina, Rabat, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and around the airport at Luqa. The same goes for Victoria, Xlendi, Marsalforn, Mġarr and Ramla Bay on Gozo. On Comino you do get reception at the Blue Lagoon, but weaker than on the main islands — in high summer, with thousands of day trippers on the same beach, it can crawl.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Malta?

When a Malta eSIM is worth it — and when it is not
The honest part first: if your mobile contract already includes data in Malta at no extra cost and your allowance covers the whole trip, you do not need us. We are not going to invent a saving that may not exist for you.
Plenty of reasons remain why people buy exactly this eSIM. The most common one: after four days of maps, photos and video calls the allowance is gone, and buying more through your home provider is expensive or awkward. The second: a separate line next to the work phone, so private data does not land on the company bill. The third: your home provider bills Malta as a foreign country — and mobile internet on your own contract gets expensive and hard to keep track of, fast. And for everyone: prepaid, no contract, nothing to cancel, no ID.
How far the networks reach — and where they stop
Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, so the mobile network is packed in tightly. 5G is built out in the urban areas; elsewhere 4G carries the load.
It thins out where it thins out everywhere: underground in the Hypogeum at Paola and the catacombs of Rabat, inside the caves of the Blue Grotto, deep under the Dingli cliffs. On the ferry between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr the signal can drop briefly mid-channel and comes straight back on the Gozo side. And the further you get from land — a boat trip to Comino, the crossing to Sicily — the less the land network reaches you.
How much data do you need in Malta?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
Every SIM card in Malta needs an ID
In Malta every mobile SIM has to be registered to a person. The rules set by the Maltese regulator MCA have been in force since 2018, and anonymous prepaid cards do not exist there. Buy a local card in a shop and you hand over your passport or ID card and wait for the registration to go through.
None of that applies to this eSIM. There is nothing to register, no document to show, no Maltese address and no shop to visit — the eSIM joins the Maltese networks as a guest. Just watch where it is valid: Malta, Gozo and Comino. It is not meant for a day trip to Sicily or the crossing there.
