Which networks will you be on in Mauritius?
Two island networks are open to your phone, Cellplus Mobile and Chili, and it takes whichever one is stronger where you stand.

You are not committing to either island operator, and there is no counter to visit at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport. Switch roaming on for the Simbye line as you taxi in and the phone has picked one of the two before you reach the car hire desk. Nothing to configure: no APN, no profile, no app to open first. If the bars stay stubbornly empty, put the phone into airplane mode, count to ten and turn it back off. That forces a fresh search and clears it up nearly every time. Should it still refuse, open the network settings, switch automatic selection off and choose the other name from the list yourself. It takes about fifteen seconds in the network menu.
The coast is the easy part. Port Louis, Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin, Belle Mare, Mahébourg and the central towns of Curepipe and Quatre Bornes are all well served, and so is the motorway that ties them together. It gets thinner inland and up high: the interior of Black River Gorges National Park, the Macchabée forest trails, the climbs up Le Morne Brabant, Le Pouce and Pieter Both, and the back roads over the Chamarel plateau can drop out mid-walk. Boat trips to Île aux Cerfs or out across the lagoon lose it at some point, and the crossing to Rodrigues is its own world. Where one network fades the other often still holds, so turn off automatic selection and pick it by hand.
