How much data do you need in Portugal?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
Which networks will you be on in Portugal?
Your phone picks NOS, MEO or Vodafone by itself, there is nothing for you to set up.

In Portugal you connect through NOS, MEO or Vodafone. Which of the three you get is decided by your phone based on the signal where you are, usually the moment you switch on after landing in Lisbon, Porto or Faro. You do not pick an operator and you do not type anything in by hand. If reception is poor in one spot, you can turn off automatic network selection in your settings and choose one of the other networks yourself. The only thing that matters is that data roaming is switched on for the Simbye line.
Coverage is dense along the coastal strip where most travellers actually go: Lisbon with Sintra, Cascais and the Costa da Caparica, Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia and Braga, the whole Algarve from Lagos through Portimão and Albufeira to Tavira, plus Coimbra, Aveiro and Évora. On the A1 and on the Alfa Pendular between Lisbon and Porto the connection normally holds. According to the regulator ANACOM there is at least one 5G station in every municipality on the mainland as well as on Madeira and the Azores, which still does not mean 5G everywhere. It gets thin where hardly anyone lives: the interior of the Alentejo, the Serra da Estrela, the steep slopes of the Douro valley, the Peneda-Gerês national park and the levada trails on Madeira. If you are hiking or driving there, download your maps and tickets in advance.

Why roaming on your home contract runs into limits in Portugal
If you fly in from the United States, Brazil, Turkey, the Gulf states or Japan, mobile data in Portugal is usually billed as a daily fee or by the megabyte, and while you are travelling you cannot see how much has piled up. The bill reaches you after the trip.
It gets tight with a flat rate too. Many tariffs release far less data abroad than at home, and anything beyond that is charged on top. If your allowance runs out mid-holiday, your provider tops it up on its own terms, often in small and expensive packages. Then there is the practical hassle: swap out your SIM and you are unreachable on your own number, and picking up a Portuguese card on the spot means a counter, an ID document and opening hours.
In all of these cases a separate data eSIM is simply the calmer option. You buy a prepaid allowance between 1 and 50 GB or an unlimited plan, choose a validity of 7 to 180 days, need no contract and no registration, set everything up by QR code before you fly, and end up with no bill that follows you home.
Where the networks actually reach
Three networks share the country: NOS, MEO and Vodafone. According to the regulator ANACOM there are 5G stations in every municipality on the mainland and on Madeira and the Azores too, though still not in every village. Full bars do not mean the same thing everywhere in Portugal.

The eSIM runs beside your home number, you set it up by QR code before you fly, and the validity only starts with your first connection in Portugal. Hotspot is allowed and you can top up at any time.
What is not included is a Portuguese phone number. SMS codes from your bank, from MB WAY or from Portuguese services will not arrive on the eSIM, your home number stays responsible for those, so leave that line switched on. Calls through WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram work normally, because they run over data.

The apps you actually need in Portugal
These are the apps that actually matter in Portugal: maps and timetables, Bolt and Uber for the ride in from the airport, the CP app for the trains, delivery services and WhatsApp, which is how most arrangements get made day to day. Almost all of them run on data, so internet is all you need. The exceptions are spelled out as warnings: those are the points where an app wants a Portuguese bank card or a Portuguese number, MB WAY being the best known example, and as a traveller you get stuck.
Bolt
Ride-hailing app and the most used taxi alternative in Lisbon, Porto and along the Algarve. Uber runs in parallel and the prices are close to each other.
Free Now left the Portuguese market in 2023, so that app is of no use to you here. In small towns and outside the season there are often no drivers waiting at all.
MB WAY
The payment app accepted almost everywhere in Portugal: send money to friends, pay in shops, settle parking fees.
You need a Portuguese bank card. Without a Portuguese account you cannot get in, not even with a foreign credit card. Use your own card, Apple Pay or Google Pay instead.
CP - Comboios de Portugal
Timetables and tickets for the railway, meaning Alfa Pendular and Intercidades between Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and Faro, plus the regional trains.
You cannot buy the suburban trains around Lisbon here, for example to Sintra or Cascais. Those need a Navegante card from the machine at the station, and in Porto an Andante card.
Via Verde
Portugal's toll system. Many motorways no longer have booths, your plate is read as you drive through and billed afterwards.
With a foreign plate you have to register first, through Via Verde Visitors or Easytoll at the border crossing. Rental cars almost always come with a device already, so do not sign up a second time.
Glovo
Delivers food, groceries and pharmacy items to your door and is the most used delivery service in Portugal. Uber Eats and Bolt Food deliver as well.
The courier calls you when he cannot find the entrance. A data-only plan gives you no number he can reach, so use the chat in the app and put the floor and doorbell straight into the order.
Meteo IPMA
The official weather app of the state institute IPMA, with sea conditions for the Atlantic beaches, the UV index and the wildfire risk in summer.
The data is refreshed only twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, which makes it too slow for sudden changes on the coast.
