The eSIM isn't tied to one single provider. It uses the Romanian networks Orange România, Vodafone România and Telekom România, and your phone picks whichever comes in best where you are. If you ever have bars but no internet, it often helps to go into your settings under Network selection, switch from automatic to manual and pick another network. Normally there's nothing to set — which of the three networks you end up on is decided where you are.
In Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Brașov, Sibiu, Craiova, Galați and Oradea coverage is solid across the city. The larger ones have 5G; whether your phone gets 4G or 5G depends on the network and your device. Between Otopeni airport and central Bucharest you have signal the whole way, and so you do on the train to Brașov. Along the Black Sea coast around Mamaia, Constanța and Vama Veche, and in the Transylvanian tourist towns — Sighișoara, Bran, Sinaia, Brașov — you'll have reliable signal in town. It gets thin where hardly anyone lives: on the hiking trails in the Făgăraș, Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains, on the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina mountain roads, and out between the channels of the Danube Delta beyond Tulcea. No eSIM is better than another out there — that's simply the coverage on the ground, so download your offline map before you go.

Buying a Romania eSIM: when it pays off and when it doesn't
Let's start with what argues against us: if your mobile contract already covers data roaming in Romania at no extra charge, you keep surfing on your normal terms and our eSIM saves you nothing. We write that down because it's true. Check your plan summary before you buy.
It gets expensive or awkward in four situations. First, if your provider doesn't list Romania in its roaming package at all — with contracts from Turkey, the UK, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Brazil or the Gulf states, the price per megabyte lives in the small print, and it's rarely cheap. Second, if your plan does allow roaming but caps the allowance for abroad: the domestic allowance is generous, the one for abroad is small, and past the limit you get billed on top. Third, if you don't want a contract at all but a prepaid option with no tie-in, no notice period and no registration. And fourth, if your employer's work phone has data roaming switched off entirely — then a second, cleanly separated line is usually the simplest route.
One thing we won't dress up: this plan has no Romanian phone number and can't receive SMS. For bank one-time codes, for the Bolt driver calling you back, and for any app sign-up with a confirmation code, you still need your usual number in the second slot. That's how it's meant to work: data through us, the number stays yours.
Where the networks reach — and where they don't
Romania has several mobile networks; this eSIM uses Orange România, Vodafone România and Telekom România. Which one your phone takes is decided where you are — there's nothing for you to set. In the cities, signal is a non-issue. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța, Brașov, Sibiu, Craiova, Galați and Oradea have solid coverage. The larger ones have 5G; whether your phone gets 4G or 5G depends on the network and your device.
More interesting is where it gets thin, because people rarely ask until it's too late. Along the Black Sea coast between Mamaia, Constanța and Vama Veche you'll have signal, but in high summer you share the same cells with an awful lot of people. In the Carpathians the rule is simple: signal in the valley and in the village, unreliable on the ridge. That covers the classic routes in the Făgăraș, Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountains and the two mountain roads, Transfăgărășan and Transalpina, which are only open in summer anyway. In the Danube Delta, Tulcea is well connected and you'll get online in Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe, but out between the channels and in the reeds, no signal is the normal state.
Practical advice for both: download the map of your region offline beforehand. And if you head into the mountains, carry a line you can actually make calls from. You reach the Salvamont mountain rescue through 112, and an emergency call is a call, not a data packet.
How much data do you need in Romania?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
Romania is an EU country — what that means for you
Romania has no registration requirement for prepaid cards. The law that would have allowed sales only against an ID document was struck down by the Constitutional Court in 2019. There's also no network block there and no block on calls over WhatsApp or Signal. The eSIM simply works once you switch on data roaming after landing — no form, no passport copy, no trip to a shop.
