You do not have to pick a network. After you land, your phone registers by itself with one of the two operators, depending on which one carries better where you are, and there is nothing to enter by hand. If nothing happens after a few minutes, switch flight mode on and off and check that data roaming is on for the eSIM. Leave network selection on automatic – if you pick a network by hand, you can end up with no connection at all.
The plan runs on 4G. Along the coast and in the cities coverage is dense; going south – Tozeur, Douz, Matmata – it thins out and is often slower. On the desert tracks the signal can disappear completely, and that is true for any SIM card and any eSIM.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Tunisia?
Tunisia rewards the eSIM: your passport stays in your bag, and you skip hunting for dinar you may not bring in or out. A local card gives you a Tunisian number, but only after the counter and a SIM swap.
Why roaming on your home contract gets expensive in Tunisia
From your first connection in Tunisia your domestic allowance stops and your operator's international price list takes over – usually per megabyte, sometimes as a day pass that charges every started travel day in full. What adds up is in no tariff summary, only on the bill. That hits package holidaymakers in Hammamet or on Djerba just as much as business travellers in Tunis.
What costs money is rarely what you do on purpose. It is the photos syncing to the cloud, the app updates and mail checking in the background. A prepaid data plan separates that cleanly: you pay a fixed amount up front, your normal plan stays in the phone only for calls and texts, and you switch its data roaming off.
Where the networks actually reach in Tunisia
Along the coast, coverage is dense: greater Tunis with Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, Bizerte and Tabarka in the north, Hammamet, Nabeul, Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia on the gulf, plus Sfax, Djerba and Zarzis. Inland, in Kairouan, El Jem or Dougga, you are online as usual.
Going south it thins out. In Tozeur, Douz, Tataouine and Matmata you normally have a signal inside the towns, often slower than on the coast. In the open desert – Ksar Ghilane, the Grand Erg Oriental, the salt flats of the Chott el Djerid – the signal can disappear entirely, and that applies to both networks equally. Plan for offline maps, and on desert tours rely on your guide rather than on the signal.
