Whether you arrive in Almaty (ALA), Astana (NQZ), Shymkent (CIT), Aktau (SCO) or Atyrau (GUW): switch off airplane mode after landing and turn on data roaming for the Simbye line.

Connecting usually takes a minute or two, and only then does your time start running. If it takes longer, toggle airplane mode once, or switch from Beeline to Tele2 in the settings. There is no APN for you to enter anywhere.

Which networks will you be on in Kazakhstan?
Your phone picks whichever network is strongest where you are standing — there is nothing for you to set.

46Mbit/s | 16Mbit/s | 51ms |

The eSIM can use two networks in Kazakhstan: Kar-Tel, which everyone in the country calls Beeline, and Tele2. Your phone connects to whichever carries better at that moment and switches on its own when one gets weak. There is nothing to type in, no APN either. Only if a spot refuses to work at all is it worth opening the settings: set network search to manual and pick the other network.
Both networks cover the inhabited parts of the country well. Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Karaganda, Aktobe, Atyrau, Aktau, Oskemen and Turkistan have solid 4G, and parts of Almaty and Astana have 5G. Between the cities, though, Kazakhstan is very empty: the road to Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai Lakes, Altyn-Emel National Park and the mountains behind Almaty all drop out, and in the steppe desert of Mangystau around Bozjyra you should plan for no signal at all. Download the cities in 2GIS before you go and you will still find your way back without a connection.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Kazakhstan?
Kazakhstan is where the eSIM saves the most hassle: roaming devices skip the handset registration, so no Kazakh tax number and no passport at a counter — a local card gets blocked after about a month without it.
| Feature | Local SIM card | |
|---|---|---|
| ID and paperwork | None. You buy online and show nothing to anyone. | Passport at the counter, and to keep the card working beyond 30 days, a device registration with a Kazakh tax number (IIN) on top. |
| Device registration (IMEI) | Not required. You connect as a guest, and devices in roaming are exempt. | Your handset must be registered within about 30 days or the card gets blocked. |
| When it starts | Set up before departure, online one to two minutes after landing in Almaty. | Only once you reach a shop or the airport desk, with a queue and a form. |
| Language | Everything in English, in the order and in the email. | Advice at the counter is usually in Russian or Kazakh. |
| Paying | Online before the trip by card, in the shop's currency. | Cash in tenge — Kaspi QR, which locals pay with, is not open to visitors. |
| Phone number | None. Pure data plan, no calls, no SMS. | A Kazakh number is included, and with it SMS codes. |
| Topping up | Add data online any time, without going anywhere. | Credit from a machine or a kiosk, menus in Russian. |
| After the trip | The eSIM simply expires. No contract, nothing to cancel. | The card sits in a drawer, and your registration stays in the system. |
For most travelers the eSIM is the simpler choice: set up before departure, no queuing on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kazakhstan eSIM
Data, calls, real phone numbers, top-ups and setup — everything you need to know before you buy a Simbye eSIM.
Yes, an eSIM actually works in Kazakhstan. An eSIM for Kazakhstan is a digital SIM card built into your phone. Your phone connects as a guest to one of the two networks, Kar-Tel (Beeline) or Tele2, technically the same way it would when roaming on your home contract. You install it before the trip and are online one to two minutes after landing.
No need to register or apply for an IIN. Anyone using a local SIM card in the country has to have their ID and device number recorded, and as a foreigner that requires a Kazakh tax number (IIN) applied for in person at a public service centre. Without it the card gets blocked after about 30 days. None of that applies to this eSIM.
No, it doesn't matter which country. Whether your phone contract runs in Istanbul, Dubai, São Paulo or Berlin changes nothing. The eSIM connects to the same two networks in Kazakhstan either way.
The eSIM covers the whole country. You do not need a separate eSIM just for Almaty: Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Turkistan and Aktau all run on the same package.
No, you can't make calls or receive SMS with it, so know that before buying. It is a pure data plan with no Kazakh phone number. You can call and message over WhatsApp or Telegram. SMS codes from banks or apps still arrive only on your home number, and only if you leave that line switched on.
Yes, you can use a hotspot with it. You can share your data over a hotspot with a laptop, a tablet or the people travelling with you.
You get an eSIM for Kazakhstan by buying it online on this page and installing it before departure. Pick the data volume, pay, and the QR code arrives by email; scanning it loads the profile onto your phone. After landing in Almaty, Astana or Shymkent you switch the line on and you are connected.
An eSIM for Kazakhstan starts at 2,95€; the final price depends on how much data you need and how long you stay, and the table above lists every Kazakhstan plan with its volume and validity. A few days of maps and messaging need much less than weeks of streaming and hotspot use on the road.
How much data you need for Kazakhstan is about 3 GB for a week or two. Maps in Almaty and Astana, messenger and taxi apps sit near 100 to 150 MB a day. Photos from Charyn Canyon or the Kolsai Lakes add a few hundred MB. Because the steppe and the mountain roads often have no signal, download offline maps over Wi-Fi first, which saves more than any pack size.
The eSIM that's best for Kazakhstan depends on how much of the country you cross. This line uses Beeline and Tele2 and takes whichever is stronger, giving solid 4G in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, Aktau and the other cities. Between them Kazakhstan is empty: Altyn-Emel, the Kolsai Lakes and Mangystau drop out on every network, and no eSIM changes that. Then it is data volume and days.
