How does Simbye eSIM work for Latvia?
Get connected in under 2 minutes
Set it up before you fly
Pick a plan, buy it, and the QR code arrives by email. Scan it at home on Wi-Fi and then leave the new line switched off for now. Installed is installed — that alone does not start the clock.
Arrive in Latvia
Whether you land at Riga (RIX), arrive by ferry in Riga or Ventspils, or come by coach from Tallinn or Vilnius: once you are in the country, switch the Simbye line on and turn data roaming on for it. After a minute or two LMT, Tele2 or Bite appears on your screen, and that is when your plan starts running.
Stay online
Set the Simbye line as your data connection and keep your usual number active for calls and texts — but with data roaming switched off on that one. When your data runs low you top up online; the eSIM stays installed and there is nothing to scan again.
Check Device Compatibility
Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing
Which networks will you be on in Latvia?
Your eSIM is not tied to one operator — in Latvia your phone can use LMT, Tele2 or Bite.
The Simbye eSIM uses 3 networks in Latvia: Latvijas Mobilais · Tele2 · Bite.
Half of all mobile speed tests in the country come out above this, half below. Speedtest Global Index, July 2026. There are no separate figures per network for this country.
There is nothing to choose. The eSIM is cleared for the Latvian networks — LMT, Tele2 and Bite — and your phone picks one of them automatically when it connects. Which one it takes is its own decision; you cannot pin it to a particular network. Only if nothing at all comes through after landing is it worth opening the settings: switch network search from automatic to manual, pick one of the three by hand, then set it back to automatic. You never have to enter an APN.
In Riga you have reception almost everywhere, from the airport through the Old Town out to the suburbs. The networks are built out to 5G across much of the city; whether your connection runs on 5G or 4G depends on the network and your phone. Jūrmala, Jelgava, Valmiera, Liepāja, Ventspils, Daugavpils and Rēzekne are covered just as well, and so are the main roads, above all the Via Baltica towards Tallinn and Vilnius. It thins out where almost nobody lives: in the forests and bogs of the Ķemeri and Gauja national parks, on the coast around Cape Kolka, and between the lakes of eastern Latgale. Enough for maps, messages and music nearly everywhere — not always enough for a video call deep in the woods.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Latvia?
Even in Latvia, where nothing has to be registered, the eSIM still saves you the trip: you scan the code before you fly and land online in Riga, with your own number still ringing beside it.
| Compared | Simbye eSIM | Local SIM card |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Before you fly: scan the QR code from the email, done | After arrival: find a shop or kiosk, swap the card |
| ID and registration | Not needed, you order online | Latvia currently requires no registration, but you still have to go to the shop in person |
| When you are online | Straight after landing in Riga | Only once a shop or kiosk is open |
| Your existing number | Stays active, WhatsApp and calls keep working | Goes offline if your phone has only one SIM slot |
| Calls and SMS | Not included, calls go through WhatsApp and similar | Latvian number included, calls and texts work normally |
| Paying | Online with your own card before you leave | On the spot in euros, cash or card |
| Topping up | Any time online, the eSIM stays installed | Top up in a shop, in an app or online |
| If something goes wrong | Support by email, new access by link | Back to the shop with your receipt |
When this eSIM is actually worth it for Latvia
Honestly, up front: a good share of travellers to Latvia already have data included in their home plan. If that is you and your allowance covers the trip, you do not need to buy anything here. We would rather say that than sell you something you already own.
The eSIM earns its place for three reasons. First, when your data allowance is small or was already used up before the trip — otherwise you are tied to hotel Wi-Fi. Second, as a second line next to a work phone: maps, Bolt and Wolt run on the eSIM, and the company contract stays cleanly out of it. Third, because this is prepaid. No contract, no commitment, no operator account, no registration — you pay a fixed amount up front and there is nothing to reconcile afterwards. And for anyone whose mobile contract comes from further away, from Turkey, the US, Brazil or Japan, Latvia is rarely part of any bundle to begin with; then prepaid is simply the easiest route.
Where the networks reach — and where they don't
Latvia is a small country with surprisingly dense coverage. Riga and the airport, the beaches of Jūrmala, the castles and trails around Sigulda and Cēsis in the Gauja valley, Liepāja and Ventspils on the Kurzeme coast, Daugavpils and Rēzekne in the east: you can count on a stable signal in all of them, and the networks in the larger cities are built out to 5G. Along the main roads, on the Via Baltica and on the train lines to Jūrmala, Valmiera or Daugavpils, the connection rarely drops out either.
It thins out away from those, and that is not particular to this eSIM — it applies to every network in the country: in the bogs and forests around Ķemeri and Slītere, near Cape Kolka where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga, and across the thinly populated lake country of Latgale. Expect a slower connection there rather than none at all — usually fine for maps and messages, not always for a video call. If you are planning a hike in a national park, download the map for offline use first.
How much data do you need in Latvia?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
No registration — but check the network in the east
Latvia currently requires no registration for prepaid mobile service. For this eSIM that means no form, no passport, no waiting in a shop. You install it at home, land in Riga and you are online. Buying a physical card locally still means finding a shop and queuing there — that step simply disappears here.
One point applies only to the east of the country: in Latgale, close to the border around Zilupe, Kārsava or Pāternieki, the networks on the other side can be nearer than the Latvian ones. If the Simbye line latches onto one of those, it simply does not work — you have no data until your phone is back on a Latvian network. It does not cost you anything extra. In those areas, glance at the network name on your screen. If it does not say LMT, Tele2 or Bite, set network selection to manual and pick one of the three.
