Airtel is one of Malawi's two nationwide networks and generally covers more ground outside the cities than TNM, and that is the network this eSIM runs on. The first time you switch on your phone in the country it finds the network and registers by itself. There is no APN to type in and no hidden setting to hunt for. Your phone will show the operator's name on that line rather than "Simbye" — that is normal. If nothing happens after ten minutes, two things fix it almost every time: toggle airplane mode off and on, and switch on data roaming for the eSIM line.
Coverage is solid where most travellers actually go. Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Zomba have 4G, and since November 2025 Airtel has switched on 5G at a limited number of sites across ten districts, among them Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu, Zomba, Kasungu, Mangochi, Mchinji and Mzimba — whether your phone actually gets 5G rather than 4G there depends on the location and on your handset. Along Lake Malawi the lakeside towns are covered: Salima and Senga Bay, Mangochi, Monkey Bay, Cape Maclear, Nkhotakota and Nkhata Bay. Away from those it thins out fast. On Likoma and Chizumulu islands, during the Ilala ferry crossing, up on the Nyika Plateau in the north, on the Mulanje Massif and in parts of Liwonde, Majete and Kasungu the signal can drop to something slow or disappear entirely. Download your maps, booking confirmations and tickets before you head into places like that.
