eSIM Paraguay
In Paraguay this eSIM from 3,95€ runs on the Claro network — data plans from 1 to 10 GB, prepaid and with no contract. Set it up before you fly and you are online within minutes of landing in Asunción.
Your Selection
Your plan only starts counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination — so you can buy today and travel in three weeks.
How does Simbye eSIM work for Paraguay?
Get connected in under 2 minutes
Set it up before you fly
After your purchase you get an email with an install link and a QR code. Set the eSIM up at home on Wi-Fi — it takes a few minutes and uses none of your data allowance. Your normal SIM stays in the phone alongside it.
Switch it on in Paraguay
Whether you land at Silvio Pettirossi airport (ASU) in Luque near Asunción or at Aeropuerto Guaraní (AGT) in Minga Guazú near Ciudad del Este: pick the new line as your mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. The connection is usually up within a few minutes.
Use it and top up
Your validity only starts with that first connection. Hotspot for a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone is allowed. When data runs low you top up online — the eSIM stays on the phone and does not need reinstalling.
Check Device Compatibility
Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing
Which networks will you be on in Paraguay?
In Paraguay the eSIM books itself onto the Claro network — there is nothing for you to set up.
Average measured mobile internet performance, nPerf barometer (measured 01.04.2025 - 31.03.2026). What you actually get depends on where you are, the time of day and your phone.
There is nothing to insert and nothing to type in: once you have landed in Paraguay and pick the eSIM as your mobile data line, your phone finds Claro on its own. You do not have to set anything by hand. The one switch that matters is data roaming — it has to be on for this line, otherwise the connection stays empty. If nothing shows up after a few minutes, switch network selection from automatic to manual once and pick Claro from the list.
In Asunción and the metro area 4G is steady, and so it is in Ciudad del Este and Encarnación. Along the main routes between Asunción, Coronel Oviedo, Ciudad del Este and Encarnación you stay reachable while travelling. The further you go into the Chaco, the bigger the gaps get — more on that below. Also expect that coverage on a long-distance bus is not the same as in the city: download maps and tickets before you set off.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Paraguay?
Paraguay favours the eSIM: your line is up as you step off the plane at Asunción, while a local card needs a counter, your passport, guaraní cash and a conversation held almost entirely in Spanish.
| Compared | Simbye eSIM | Local SIM card |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | QR code from the email, done at home | Only after you arrive, hunting for a counter or shop |
| ID | No registration needed | Your passport is asked for at the counter |
| Paying | Online in advance with your own card | Guaraníes in cash, foreign cards not accepted everywhere |
| Language | Purchase and email in your language | Counter advice almost entirely in Spanish |
| Time at the airport | None, the line is up as you step off | Queueing at ASU instead of heading straight out |
| Phone number | No Paraguayan number included | Local number included |
| Calls and SMS | Data only, calls via WhatsApp and similar apps | Calls and SMS over the network |
| Topping up | Online, from anywhere, in minutes | Top-up voucher at a kiosk, usually cash only |
Why your contract from home gets expensive in Paraguay
Paraguay is included in very few mobile contracts. Depending on your provider you pay per megabyte, buy a day pass, or get nothing at all and only notice on the bill. What it adds up to is usually impossible to know beforehand — and the invoice reaches you weeks after the trip, long after you are back home.
The eSIM turns that around. You pay once upfront, see the data amount before you buy, and cannot slide into an extra charge. No contract, no notice period, no registration with an ID document. When the plan is used up you top up or you don't — nothing happens on its own. That is why this works the same for travellers from any country, whether you fly in from São Paulo, Istanbul, Tokyo or Berlin.
Claro Paraguay: eSIM coverage from Asunción to the Chaco
In Asunción and the metro area — Luque, San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Capiatá — you have reliable signal, and so you do in Ciudad del Este and Hernandarias by the Itaipú dam, in Encarnación including the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue, in San Bernardino on Lake Ypacaraí, and in Concepción and Pedro Juan Caballero. Along the main routes between Asunción, Coronel Oviedo, Ciudad del Este and Encarnación you stay reachable on the move.
It thins out in the Chaco. Around the colonies of Filadelfia and Loma Plata there is signal, but on the Ruta Transchaco in between expect long dead zones, and in Defensores del Chaco National Park or up the Río Paraguay towards Bahía Negra silence is normal. If you are heading there, download maps, bookings and contacts in advance and save your calls for the stops in the towns.
How much data do you need in Paraguay?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
At the border your phone happily jumps to the neighbouring country
Ciudad del Este sits right at the Friendship Bridge to Foz do Iguaçu, Encarnación faces Posadas across the river, and in Pedro Juan Caballero the border runs through the middle of town — the Brazilian city of Ponta Porã starts on the other side of the street. In these spots the Brazilian or Argentinian signal is sometimes stronger than the Paraguayan one. Your phone then registers there and the eSIM sits without a connection, because this plan is valid in Paraguay only.
The fix takes less than a minute: set network selection from automatic to manual and pick Claro. And plan for a day trip to the Iguazú Falls on the Brazilian or Argentinian side to happen without data — this plan does not cover it.
