How does Simbye eSIM work for Russia?

Get connected in under 2 minutes

1

Set it up before you fly

After your purchase you get an email with a link and a QR code. Install the eSIM calmly at home over Wi-Fi, because the first day in Russia is often the hardest one to get online. Nothing happens until you land, and your normal contract keeps running as usual.

2

Switch it on after landing

Whether you land in Moscow at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo or Vnukovo, in St Petersburg at Pulkovo, or in Sochi, Kazan or Yekaterinburg: turn on the eSIM line and enable data roaming for it. Your phone then registers with Beeline or t2 by itself.

3

First connection starts the clock

Your validity starts with that first connection, not with the purchase. Expect the Russian block on foreign cards at the beginning (see the notice above): it runs down your validity while the eSIM is not yet usable. Use airport or hotel Wi-Fi until it lifts.

Check Device Compatibility

Make sure your device supports eSIM before purchasing

Which networks will you be on in Russia?

Your Russia eSIM picks between Beeline and t2 on its own – there is nothing for you to set up.

The Simbye eSIM uses 2 networks in Russia: Beeline · Tele2.

Beeline
Tele2

When your phone first registers it picks whichever of the two networks has the better signal, and it will switch again as you travel. If nothing works in one spot, turn off automatic network selection in your settings and pick Beeline or t2 by hand – that often does the trick. The one thing you have to switch on is data roaming for the eSIM line, otherwise it stays silent.

Coverage in the big cities is solid: at the Moscow airports Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, at Pulkovo in St Petersburg, and in the Moscow metro you have a signal underground as well. Once you leave the cities it thins out fast – but a Russian SIM card has just as little signal there as your eSIM. So download maps, timetables and translations for offline use before you go.

eSIM or a local SIM card in Russia?

Russia tips towards the eSIM for two blunt reasons: a local SIM needs Gosuslugi registration with biometrics, which for foreigners can take days, and you pay in cash roubles because foreign cards are not accepted there.

Feature Simbye eSIM Local SIM card
Ready before you travel Yes, you buy and install it at home over Wi-Fi No, only after arrival in a shop
Registration and ID Not needed, you buy the eSIM online Passport, registration on the state portal Gosuslugi and biometric data; for foreigners this often takes several days
Paying Online with the card you already use, before you fly Cash in roubles on the ground – foreign Visa and Mastercard cards are not accepted in Russia
First 24 hours in the country Mobile internet is blocked at the start, see the notice above No block, but the registration comes first
Phone number None, data only A Russian number is included
SMS and calls Not possible Possible, useful for apps that send an SMS code
Topping up Any time online, even before you travel At a machine or in a shop, and as a visitor only with cash
After the trip Stays on your phone, you book new data online The number lapses if you stop paying for it
For most travelers the eSIM is the simpler choice: set up before departure, no queuing on arrival.
