Arriving in Uganda
Almost every traveller lands at Entebbe – Uganda's only international passenger airport, about 40 kilometres from Kampala. If you come overland you cross at Malaba or Busia from Kenya, Katuna or Cyanika from Rwanda, Mutukula from Tanzania or Elegu from South Sudan. There you switch the Simbye line on in your settings and enable data roaming.

Which networks will you be on in Uganda?
Your Uganda eSIM runs on the Airtel network – here is where 4G reaches, and where it does not.
You do not have to pick a network by hand. Once you land in Uganda with data roaming switched on, your phone finds Airtel Uganda on its own, usually while you are still walking through Entebbe airport. If nothing appears after a few minutes: turn flight mode on and off again, and check that data roaming is enabled for the Simbye line. If it still stays empty, switch network search from automatic to manual once in your settings and pick Airtel. There is no APN to type in.
Airtel has 4G in the cities and along the main roads: Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale, Masaka, Lira, Hoima, Fort Portal and Kabale, and the road from Kampala via Masaka to Mbarara as well as the highway east to Jinja stay covered between the towns. Airtel has also rolled out 5G in Kampala and several regional cities – but 5G is not guaranteed when roaming, so plan around 4G. In the national parks it thins out, and honestly it thins out fast: park gates, ranger posts and the larger lodges usually have signal, the tracks in between often do not. In Bwindi you get coverage at Buhoma and Rushaga, but not inside the forest. At Murchison Falls the southern side around Paraa is better served than the Buligi plains in the north. Queen Elizabeth sits somewhere in between, and Kidepo Valley in the far north-east is the thinnest of all. Download your maps and bookings for offline use before you set off.
eSIM or a local SIM card in Uganda?
Uganda rewards the eSIM if your trip is short: no passport, visa copy or photo at a kiosk in Entebbe, and no card that expires with your visa — a local SIM is only registered for as long as your visa runs.

Why roaming on your home contract gets expensive in Uganda
Wherever you fly in from – Dallas, Istanbul, São Paulo, Dubai or Frankfurt – Uganda is a foreign network for your home contract. Your provider buys the connection from a Ugandan operator and passes the cost on, and without a booked travel add-on that means per-megabyte billing or a daily fee that starts the moment your phone wakes up at Entebbe.
Megabytes add up faster than you expect: a map through Kampala traffic, a few voice notes to your guide, uploading the gorilla photos in the evening. The exact rate is in your provider's price list – look it up once before you fly, and the question usually answers itself.
The second reason is the local alternative. A Ugandan SIM card is cheap, but it costs you your passport, your visa, a passport photo and a personal visit to a shop, and it only runs as long as your visa does. After a twelve-hour flight into Entebbe, most people would rather get going than queue. This eSIM is prepaid and needs none of that: you buy it online, scan the QR code at home and arrive connected.
Where the networks reach – and where they do not
Uganda has several mobile networks. This eSIM runs on Airtel, with 1 to 3 GB over 7 to 15 days. You get 4G in Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara, Gulu, Mbale, Fort Portal, Masaka, Hoima, Lira and Kabale, and Airtel has additionally rolled out 5G in Kampala and several of those cities; but 5G is not guaranteed when roaming. Along the main roads between towns, coverage is usually continuous.
On safari the picture changes. Signal is typically there at park gates, ranger posts and the larger lodges – and often not on the tracks in between. Bwindi is reachable at Buhoma and Rushaga, but not inside the forest. At Murchison Falls the southern side around Paraa works better than the wide Buligi plains to the north. Kidepo Valley in the far north-east is the country's loneliest park, and the network makes that obvious.
Plan around it rather than fighting it: save maps offline, screenshot your booking confirmations, send the important messages at the park gate or from the lodge. Lodge Wi-Fi is a nice supplement, but rarely stable enough to rely on.
Network blocks and registration – what you should know about Uganda
Uganda intervenes in internet access, and you should know that before you travel. Facebook has been blocked in Uganda since January 2021. There have been reports in the meantime that the site was reachable again, but the regulator UCC never officially confirmed it, so do not count on it. Around the January 2021 election, public internet access was shut down nationwide for five days; interventions like that are possible around election dates. No eSIM helps against that, ours included – it runs on the same Ugandan network as any local SIM card. The regulator has also publicly warned against circumventing blocks.
Local SIM cards in Uganda carry a registration requirement: foreigners must appear in person at a shop with an original passport, a valid visa or residence permit and a passport photo, and the card is only activated for the duration of the visa. This eSIM is a prepaid roaming eSIM – you buy it online, there is nothing to register, no shop visit and no expiry tied to your visa.
