The eSIM connects to AT&T and Verizon. Which of the two you get in a given place is decided automatically, and your phone switches when it needs to. You don't select anything and you don't enter any settings. The one thing that matters is that data roaming is switched on for the Simbye line: in the US you are a guest on someone else's network, and without that switch the line stays silent. If things stall in the terminal after landing at JFK, Newark or Los Angeles, ten seconds of airplane mode is usually enough – the phone then searches again.
In the cities coverage is dense: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, Boston, Washington, Seattle, Las Vegas, Orlando and the suburbs in between. Along the big interstates and on both coasts you have signal almost everywhere, and in New York's underground stations too – in the tunnels between stations only on some lines so far. It thins out in the West: Death Valley, Monument Valley, large parts of Yellowstone and long stretches through Nevada, Utah and Arizona simply have no signal, and that hits every American carrier just the same. Why roaming on your home contract gets expensive
Travelling to the US on your own mobile contract almost always means special rates. With most providers they sit under world zone or rest of world, and behind that is either a price per megabyte or a day pass with a small allowance in it. Working out which one applies takes a while, and it changes without notice.
You rarely notice on day one. It becomes obvious after a week, once car navigation, boarding passes, photos into the family chat and a few videos have added up. How far the networks actually reach

Between the stations, inside the tunnels, only part of the lines is wired so far.
The West is a different story. Death Valley, Monument Valley, large parts of Yellowstone, the long stretches through Nevada, Utah and Arizona, and in places the coast road near Big Sur: the dead zones there run for miles. That is not a quirk of this plan, it is a matter of terrain and population density, and it hits American contracts just the same.
If you are planning a road trip, download maps, routes and park information beforehand and tell people at home you will be offline for a few hours. In the cities and along the coasts you will never notice it.
No registration needed – but no phone number either
The US has no registration requirement for prepaid plans and no block on foreign eSIMs. There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to unlock and no ID to show. The point that does affect you is a different one: this is a data-only plan with no phone number. Calls, SMS and emergency calls to 911 do not run over it.
So keep your normal SIM active in the phone, with its data roaming switched off. You stay reachable on your usual number and keep receiving SMS codes from your bank – you need those more often in the US than you would expect, for instance when a card payment at Uber or a hotel has to be confirmed. Before you fly, check in your settings that mobile data is set to the Simbye line and calls to your home number.
