Which networks will you be on in Vietnam?
You set nothing up – after landing the eSIM picks between Viettel and Vinaphone on its own.

Two networks are enabled on this eSIM: Viettel and Vinaphone. You don't pick one. After landing the eSIM connects on its own and switches while you travel if the other network is stronger. Viettel is the country's largest operator and carries furthest into the provinces, Vinaphone is strongest in the cities and along the coast. If nothing appears after you switch on: turn on data roaming, then flight mode off and on once. You never have to type in an APN. Worth knowing if your phone is older: Vietnam is switching off 2G completely from 15 September 2026, so your handset should support 4G. 3G is set to run until 2028.
In Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Da Lat and Can Tho, 4G is everywhere and the big cities also have 5G – but the national 5G rollout is still far from finished and does not reach every province. Along the coastal route, in Ninh Binh, across the Mekong Delta and on Phu Quoc you'll get through fine. It thins out in the mountains and on the water: on the Ha Giang Loop, on the passes around Sapa, inside the caves at Phong Nha and on boats in Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay, signal can disappear for hours. Download maps, tickets and translations offline before you go.

Vietnam splits by what you need: the eSIM is ready before you land and asks for no ID, while a local SIM means a shop photographing your passport — but it brings the +84 number that Zalo and MoMo want.

Buying a Vietnam eSIM before you fly
Travel to Vietnam on your home contract and you pay foreign rates. Most carriers either bill per megabyte or sell you a day pass that costs money for every travel day you touch and usually includes only a small allowance. Spend three weeks riding from Hanoi to Saigon and you pay for the days you only glanced at the map twice – and you see the total only on the bill after the trip.
Then there's daily life on the ground. In Vietnam almost everything runs through your phone: ordering a Grab, finding the driver in the crowd, sending the hostel your arrival time, booking the sleeper bus, showing an address in Vietnamese. Without data you're standing at the roadside haggling with a taxi driver over a price you have no way to judge.
The eSIM is pure prepaid: no contract, no notice period, no registration, no bill afterwards. Where the networks reach – and where they don't
In the north, Hanoi is solidly covered, and so are Ninh Binh and Ha Long. But once you're on a boat in Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay, or climbing the passes on the Ha Giang Loop, it turns patchy. Around Sapa you'll have signal in town and often nothing on the trails out to the villages. Plan Ha Giang so your route and accommodation are already offline on your phone.
Through the centre, the coastal corridor is steady: Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An and everything in between work without trouble, and Da Nang is fast. The outlier is Phong Nha. Inside the caves and in the karst gorges around them the signal is gone, on Viettel as much as on Vinaphone – that's geology, not a plan problem.
In the south, coverage carries reliably through Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne, Da Lat, Can Tho and across Phu Quoc. It thins out on the smaller Mekong Delta channels and at the homestays between the canals, and on the crossing to Con Dao you shouldn't count on it at all. Rule of thumb: where tour buses and scooters go, the network goes. Where you need a boat or a mountain road, download first.
How much data do you need in Vietnam?
So you can work it out instead of guessing: how much an hour costs in the apps you actually use on holiday.
The Netflix and Spotify figures come from the providers themselves (Netflix Help Center, Spotify Support, retrieved 28 Aug 2026). The rest are network-operator estimates (o2, Vodafone, EE) and vary with picture quality and reception.
No registration – but no Vietnamese number either
SIM cards in Vietnam have had to be registered to a person since 2016. Buy a card locally and the shop photographs your passport and enters your details. None of that applies to our data eSIM: you buy it online as a traveller, no ID is asked for, and you don't have to register with anyone.
The flip side comes with it. You get no +84 number, which shuts you out of the services that insist on one – above all Zalo, the MoMo wallet and confirmation texts from Vietnamese banks. And regardless of which SIM you use: Telegram has been blocked at operator level in Vietnam by government order since May 2025.
