Cómo funciona Simbye eSIM para Noruega?
Conéctate en menos de 2 minutos
Set it up at home
You buy the plan and get an email with a one-click link and a QR code. Install the eSIM over your own Wi-Fi before you fly. It takes a few minutes, and the validity does not start yet.
Land and switch on
After landing at Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen Flesland, Trondheim Værnes, Stavanger Sola, Tromsø Langnes, Ålesund Vigra or Sandefjord Torp, turn on data roaming for the Simbye line. Your phone then registers with a Norwegian network by itself.
Get going
The clock starts with that first connection. You can check your usage any time, and when data runs low you top up online — no new eSIM, no scanning the QR code again.
¿En qué redes estarás en Noruega?
Your phone picks a Norwegian network by itself after you land — there is nothing for you to set up.
La mitad de las mediciones móviles del país queda por encima y la otra mitad por debajo. Speedtest Global Index, julio de 2026. No hay valores separados por red para este país.
You do not pick a network. After landing, your phone finds a Norwegian network itself and stays there as long as the signal holds. There is no APN to type in anywhere. If you are somewhere with full bars but no data, the same trick almost always works: turn airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again so your phone registers afresh. If that changes nothing, switch from automatic to manual network search in your mobile settings and see whether another Norwegian network is open to you. If your phone cannot register with one, switch back to automatic — otherwise you end up with no data at all.
Norway is thinly populated, with a lot of rock in between. Along the towns and the main routes the signal is good: Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Kristiansand, Ålesund, Bodø and Tromsø, the E6 heading north, the E39 along the west coast, plus fjord villages like Geiranger, Flåm, Odda and Svolvær. The gaps sit where nobody lives either: in the long road tunnels, up on the summer passes such as Trollstigen and Sognefjellet, across the Hardangervidda plateau, in narrow fjord arms below steep walls, and out at sea once the ferry leaves the coast. Download maps, tickets and music beforehand, and a dead spot is just a nice view.
Do not plan on Svalbard (Spitsbergen)
Longyearbyen and the rest of the archipelago run on their own network, one that is not part of mainland Norway and where the European roaming rules do not apply. Please do not plan on using this eSIM there. On the mainland everything is normal, including the far north: Tromsø, Alta, Kirkenes and the North Cape are all covered.
For the mainland there is no registration requirement for you — no ID, no sign-up, no waiting. That is exactly the difference to a local prepaid card: in Norway you have to buy that one in a shop with ID, and without a Norwegian ID number you cannot activate it online at all.

¿eSIM o tarjeta SIM local en Noruega?
| Comparación | eSIM Simbye | Tarjeta SIM local |
|---|---|---|
| ID required | No, you buy and activate it yourself | Yes, Norwegian law requires ID at the point of sale |
| Where you get it | By email, before you even fly | In a shop on arrival; without a Norwegian ID number there is no online activation |
| When you are online | Right after you land | Only once a shop is open and the card is activated |
| Payment | Prepaid with your own card | On the spot in Norwegian kroner — almost nobody pays cash in Norway any more |
| Your home number | Stays reachable as a second line | Has to come out if your phone has only one SIM slot |
| Calls and SMS over the network | Not included, data only | Usually included, with a Norwegian number |
| Topping up | Online any time, no new eSIM | In a shop or through a Norwegian payment app |
| Svalbard (Spitsbergen) | Do not count on it there — the archipelago runs its own network | A Norwegian Telenor card does work in Longyearbyen |
Why your home contract gets expensive here — and when it does not
Norway is part of the EEA. If you hold an EU contract, you use data there at domestic rates. In that case this eSIM would not save you roaming fees, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
It gets expensive in four other situations. First, if you are travelling from outside the EU: coming from the US, Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Asia or Australia, the European rule does not apply, and daily roaming fees add up to a three-figure sum over a two-week trip. Second, on prepaid tariffs where use abroad simply is not included. Third, when your contract does have EU roaming but caps it at a few gigabytes abroad — on a Norway trip with navigation, ferry timetables, maps and photos syncing to the cloud, that goes faster than you expect. And fourth, when you need a second line, because a work phone is not allowed to roam, or because two of you are travelling and only one has enough data.
Where the networks reach — and honestly where they do not
In Norway the signal is good practically everywhere people live, which matters especially here: nearly all travel runs along a handful of routes. On the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen, on the Flåm Railway, along the Atlantic Road, at the viewpoints of the National Tourist Routes and on the E10 through Lofoten out to Å, you will normally have signal.
Signal will be missing in the long road tunnels, up on the summer passes, across the Hardangervidda between Geilo and Eidfjord, in narrow fjord arms below steep rock walls, and on the long sea stretches towards the North Cape. If you are hiking, assume there is nothing from the car park onwards and download your map and route beforehand. This is not a quirk of our eSIM: in tunnels, on high passes and out at sea a Norwegian card rarely has signal either. The one real difference is Svalbard (Spitsbergen): a local Telenor card works there, and you should not count on ours.

Norway is largely cashless and runs on apps — tickets, weather, hiking maps, taxis. Nearly all of them need data while you are out: timetables update live, tickets are bought on the spot in the app, and in the mountains the forecast is a different one every hour. Two things up front to save you effort: paying itself works everywhere with a card or Apple Pay, no Norwegian app required. And food delivery through Foodora and Wolt is mainly a city thing.
Vipps
Norway's payment app. It is how Norwegians send each other money and pay at flea markets, farm stalls and small cafés.
Without a Norwegian bank account, BankID and Norwegian phone number you usually cannot even sign up. There is now a limited version for visitors with a European Visa or Mastercard; from outside Europe it does not work. You do not need Vipps anyway: card or Apple Pay works everywhere.
Entur
Timetables for the whole country in one app — bus, train, metro, tram and many ferries — plus tickets from many operators across regional borders; in Oslo you buy through Ruter.
Adding a payment card often fails with cards issued outside Europe. If yours is rejected, pay through Apple Pay or Google Pay instead.
Ruter
The app for Oslo and the surrounding region — metro, bus, tram and the small island ferries on the Oslofjord.
Activate the ticket before you board, not once you are on. A ticket that is bought but not activated does not count during an inspection. Same card hurdle as Entur.
Yr
The forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and broadcaster NRK that Norwegians use themselves — hour by hour, plus sunrise and sunset.
-
Bolt
Taxi by app in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and Tromsø; Uber runs in several of those cities as well.
Neither app operates outside the bigger cities — there the only option is to phone the local taxi company, and you do that on your normal number, since this plan is data only. Better to book in an app where the price is fixed in advance than to flag one down in the street.
UT.no
Hiking routes, cabins and maps from the Norwegian Trekking Association DNT — the standard app for trips from Lofoten to Jotunheimen.
Download the map offline first: in the mountains you are regularly out of signal from the car park onwards. You can stay at staffed cabins without a DNT membership, you just pay more; the unstaffed ones only open with the DNT key, which is members-only.
