It depends on the country of purchase. The iPhone 17e has no SIM tray in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and several other countries and territories. Everywhere else it has a nano-SIM tray plus eSIM, so you can keep a physical SIM and add a travel eSIM.

Does the iPhone 16e have a physical SIM slot?

Yes, outside the US. The iPhone 16e is eSIM-only only in the US. Models sold in Europe, the UK, Türkiye, Asia and most other regions have a nano-SIM tray and support eSIM at the same time.

Both run two eSIMs at the same time and store eight or more, according to Apple's tech specs. On a model with a tray, you can also combine one physical SIM with one eSIM. Both lines stay on standby for calls and texts, and one of them carries mobile data.

How do I set up a travel eSIM on the iPhone 17e or 16e?

Setting up a travel eSIM takes about two minutes on both models. Do it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly.

  1. Buy the plan. Choose your destination on Simbye. The eSIM arrives by email right after payment, with an install link and a QR code.
  2. Install it. Tap the install link on the iPhone, or open Settings, Cellular (Mobile Service in some regions), Add eSIM and scan the QR code from another screen.
  3. Name it. Label it "Travel" so the two lines are easy to tell apart.
  4. Pick the roles. Keep your home number for calls, iMessage and FaceTime. Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data.
  5. Roaming. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM only, and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.
  6. After landing. Turn off airplane mode. The phone joins the local network by itself.

Every screen is shown in our iPhone eSIM installation guide. Most Simbye data plans start counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination.

Can I use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time?

Yes, on any iPhone 17e or 16e with a tray. Leave your home SIM card in the tray and add the travel eSIM as the second line. On an eSIM-only model, both lines are eSIMs, and the result is the same: two numbers on standby, data on the travel line.

Does my iPhone 17e or 16e need to be unlocked?

Yes. A travel eSIM installs only on a phone without a carrier lock. Check Settings, General, About: Carrier Lock should read No SIM restrictions. Phones bought from Apple are usually unlocked, phones on a carrier contract can be locked for a period.
