iPhone 18 Pro eSIM Guide (2026): SIM Tray by Country, Dual eSIM & Travel Setup

iPhone 18 Pro eSIM Guide (2026): SIM Tray by Country, Dual eSIM & Travel Setup
Quick answer: Yes, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support eSIM and dual eSIM, with two active lines and room for eight or more stored eSIMs. Models sold in 12 markets, including the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are eSIM-only. Everywhere else they keep a nano-SIM tray next to eSIM. A travel eSIM installs on either version in about two minutes.

Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, and both went on sale on September 18, 2026. Whether your phone has a SIM tray depends only on where you bought it. This guide shows the SIM setup by country, how many eSIMs fit, the two-line setup that works best abroad, and which Simbye eSIM suits your trip.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro eSIM-only?

The iPhone 18 Pro is eSIM-only only in 12 markets. Apple lists them as Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the US and the US Virgin Islands. In every other country, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max ship with a nano-SIM tray and full eSIM support.

Where the iPhone 18 Pro was bought SIM tray What it means when you travel
US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Guam, US Virgin Islands ✗ No tray, eSIM-only A local plastic SIM card will not fit. Mobile data abroad comes from an eSIM.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE ✗ No tray, eSIM-only Same as above: travel data only through an eSIM.
Europe, the UK, Türkiye, Australia, most of Asia, Africa and South America ✓ Nano-SIM plus eSIM You can keep a SIM card in the tray and add a travel eSIM as the second line.

The rule is the same for both sizes: an iPhone 18 Pro Max from the US is eSIM-only, while one bought in Germany or the UK has a tray. A phone keeps its configuration when you take it to another country.

How many eSIMs can the iPhone 18 Pro hold?

The iPhone 18 Pro runs two eSIMs at the same time and stores eight or more, according to Apple's tech specs. Two active lines means your home number and a travel eSIM can be switched on together. The stored profiles stay on the phone, so you can keep plans for different destinations and switch on the right one before each trip.

Both lines use Dual SIM Dual Standby. Both numbers can receive calls and texts, but only one line carries mobile data at a time. For travel, that data line should be the travel eSIM.

What the iPhone 18 Pro changes for travelers

Feature iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max Why it matters abroad
Dual eSIM Two active eSIMs, eight or more stored Home number and travel data run side by side.
Cellular modem Apple C2 on the iPhone 18 Pro, with 5G and mmWave support in the US Apple quotes faster uploads and 15% lower modem energy use.
Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 7 through Apple's N1 chip Faster setup of a travel eSIM on hotel or airport Wi-Fi.
Satellite Emergency SOS, Messages, Roadside Assistance and Find My via satellite A fallback where there is no mobile network at all.
Battery (Apple figures) Up to 36 hours of video playback on the 18 Pro, up to 45 hours on the 18 Pro Max Long travel days with maps and hotspot use.

Apple's figures come from its September 2026 press release. Satellite features and their availability depend on the country, so check Apple's list before you rely on them on a trip.

How do I set up a travel eSIM on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Setting up a travel eSIM on the iPhone 18 Pro takes about two minutes and works the same on eSIM-only and tray models. Do it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly.

  1. Buy the plan. Choose your destination on Simbye. The eSIM arrives by email right after payment, with a one-tap install link and a QR code.
  2. Install it. On the iPhone, tap the install link in the email. On another screen, open Settings, then Cellular (Mobile Service in some regions), tap Add eSIM and scan the QR code.
  3. Name the line. Pick a label such as "Travel" so you can tell the two lines apart.
  4. Choose the roles. Keep your home number as the default line for calls, iMessage and FaceTime. Set the travel eSIM as the line for mobile data.
  5. Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM only. Leave roaming off on your home line to avoid charges from your home carrier.
  6. Switch it on at your destination. After landing, turn off airplane mode. The phone registers on the local network by itself.

Our step-by-step iPhone eSIM installation guide shows every screen. For the timing of a plan, most Simbye data plans start counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination, not on the day you buy it.

Which two-line setup works best abroad?

Task Home line Simbye travel eSIM
Mobile data, maps, ride apps Off ✓ On
Bank and login codes by SMS ✓ Receives them Not needed
WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime ✓ Stays on your number, runs over the travel data Carries the data
Data roaming Off On

One setting is easy to miss. Under Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching. Otherwise the iPhone may fall back to your home line for data when the signal drops, and that can trigger roaming charges.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro need to be unlocked for a travel eSIM?

Yes. A travel eSIM only installs on an iPhone 18 Pro that is not locked to one carrier. Phones bought directly from Apple are usually unlocked. Phones bought on a carrier contract can be locked for a period. Check it under Settings, General, About: next to Carrier Lock it should say No SIM restrictions. If it does not, ask your carrier to unlock the phone before your trip.

Can I still buy a local SIM card abroad?

On an eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro from the US, Canada, Japan or the Gulf, no: there is no tray for a plastic card. On a tray model you can, but in many countries a local SIM card now means a shop visit with your passport. In Thailand, for example, every new prepaid card has been registered in person with a passport and a live photo since August 2025. A travel eSIM arrives by email and is ready before you land.

iPhone 18 Pro eSIM: frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 Pro eSIM-only?

Only in 12 markets: Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the US and the US Virgin Islands. iPhone 18 Pro models sold anywhere else have a nano-SIM tray plus eSIM.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max have eSIM?

Yes. The iPhone 18 Pro Max has the same SIM setup as the iPhone 18 Pro: dual eSIM with two active lines and eight or more stored eSIMs, eSIM-only in the same 12 markets and with a nano-SIM tray elsewhere.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro eSIM-only in the UK?

No. iPhone 18 Pro models sold in the UK have a nano-SIM tray and also support eSIM. The same applies to models sold in Germany, France, Türkiye and most other countries outside the 12 eSIM-only markets.

How do I activate an eSIM on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Tap the install link from your eSIM email on the iPhone, or open Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM and scan the QR code. Then set the travel eSIM as the mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line only.

How many eSIMs can the iPhone 18 Pro use at once?

Two eSIMs can be active at the same time, and the phone stores eight or more. On a tray model, you can also combine one physical SIM with one eSIM.

Can I use a US iPhone 18 Pro in Europe or Asia?

Yes. An eSIM-only US model works abroad with any eSIM from a carrier or travel eSIM provider, as long as the phone is not carrier-locked. It cannot take a local plastic SIM card.

What is the downside of an eSIM-only iPhone?

You cannot move a line by swapping a card into another phone. Moving a number needs eSIM Quick Transfer or your carrier, and a lost or broken phone means the eSIM has to be reissued. For travel, the eSIM is an advantage: no shop visit and no card to lose.

Is there a standard iPhone 18?

Not yet. Apple's September 2026 event introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the foldable iPhone Duo. The iPhone 17 stays Apple's standard model for now.
