Move your number to eSIM before you switch, and add a travel eSIM for trips abroad.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, introduced on September 9, 2026. It opens from a 5.4-inch outer display to a 7.6-inch inner display. Like the iPhone Air, it has no SIM tray in any market. This guide explains what eSIM-only means for your number, how to set up two lines, and how to get mobile data abroad without a local SIM card.

How do I move my number to the iPhone Duo?

Your number has to be an eSIM before it can run on the iPhone Duo. There are three ways, depending on your carrier.

  1. eSIM Quick Transfer from your old iPhone. During setup, the iPhone Duo offers to transfer the line from your previous iPhone. This works if your carrier supports it, and it also converts a physical SIM.
  2. Conversion by your carrier. If Quick Transfer is not offered, your carrier can issue a new eSIM for your number, usually in its app, online or in a shop.
  3. Carrier activation link. Some carriers send an activation QR code or link that you scan in Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM.

Do this before a trip, at home and on Wi-Fi. Converting a number abroad can fail if your carrier needs an SMS confirmation that you cannot receive without the line.

Traveling with an eSIM-only phone: what changes?

With the iPhone Duo you cannot buy a local plastic SIM card at the airport, because it will not fit. You have two options abroad: roaming on your home line, or a travel eSIM for local data. Many local carriers sell eSIMs too, but they often want a passport check in a shop. A travel eSIM such as Simbye arrives by email and is installed before you leave.

The iPhone Duo keeps two lines active at once. Your home number stays reachable for calls, SMS and login codes, while the travel eSIM carries the mobile data at local rates.

How do I set up a travel eSIM on the iPhone Duo?

Setting up a travel eSIM on the iPhone Duo takes about two minutes and works the same folded or unfolded.

  1. Buy the plan. Choose your destination on Simbye. The eSIM arrives by email right after payment, with an install link and a QR code.
  2. Install it. Tap the install link on the iPhone Duo, or open Settings, Cellular (Mobile Service in some regions), Add eSIM and scan the QR code shown on another screen.
  3. Name it and pick the roles. Label it "Travel", keep your home number for calls and iMessage, and choose the travel eSIM for mobile data.
  4. Roaming settings. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, so the phone never falls back to your home line for data.
  5. After landing. Turn off airplane mode. The iPhone Duo registers on the local network by itself.

The full walkthrough with screenshots is in our iPhone eSIM installation guide. Most Simbye data plans start counting when the eSIM first connects at your destination.

Does the iPhone Duo need to be unlocked?

Yes, a travel eSIM only installs on an unlocked phone. An iPhone Duo bought from Apple is usually unlocked. One bought on a carrier contract can be locked for a period. Check Settings, General, About: Carrier Lock should say No SIM restrictions.

iPhone Duo eSIM: frequently asked questions

Can I put a physical SIM card in the iPhone Duo?

No. The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray in any country and is not compatible with physical SIM cards. Every line, including your home number, has to run as an eSIM.

Why is the iPhone Duo eSIM-only?

Apple says the eSIM-only design saves internal space, which goes into battery capacity. In a foldable phone, the room a SIM tray would take is especially valuable.

Can the iPhone Duo use two numbers?

Yes. Two eSIMs can be active at the same time, for example your home number and a travel eSIM, and eight or more eSIMs can be stored.

When can I buy the iPhone Duo?

Pre-orders start on October 16, 2026. The iPhone Duo is in stores from October 23, 2026 in more than 70 countries, and in 28 more countries from October 30. It starts at $1,999 in the US.

Does a travel eSIM work on the iPhone Duo?

Yes, on an unlocked iPhone Duo. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, set it as the mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it after landing.

Can I use one eSIM on two iPhones?

No. One eSIM profile runs on one device. If you switch to the iPhone Duo, transfer the eSIM or ask for a new one. Your old phone loses the line.

What happens to my eSIM if the iPhone Duo breaks?

The eSIM cannot be pulled out like a card. Your carrier issues the line again on a new device. Keep your carrier's contact details and your travel eSIM email at hand before a trip.
