You do not pick a network. The moment you land in Thailand and switch off airplane mode, your phone finds the strongest signal from TrueMove H or DTAC on its own, and it switches between them as you travel. There is nothing to enter by hand. Two things matter: data roaming has to be on for the eSIM, and the eSIM has to be selected as your mobile data line, so your phone stops using your card from home.
In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Krabi and Hat Yai you get 4G almost everywhere and 5G across large parts of the cities. On the bigger islands – Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Chang, Koh Lanta – coverage is solid in the towns, on the beaches and at the piers, but it thins out inland and in the hills. On very small islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Lipe, in Khao Sok National Park and on the mountain roads around Pai and Mae Hong Son you should expect dead spots, and on the ferries between the mainland and the islands the signal drops out for stretches. SIM registration is mandatory in Thailand
Since August 2025 every newly issued prepaid card in Thailand has to be registered in person: you show your passport and a staff member takes a live photo of your face on the spot, which goes to the regulator. This applies in shops, at dealers and at the counters in the arrivals hall. An unregistered card is switched off within a day, and tourist SIMs are additionally capped at 60 days.
Your eSIM, by contrast, arrives by email and is set up at home, so you never queue for it in Thailand. Separately, entry requires the Thailand Digital Arrival Card: every foreign visitor completes it online for free, at the earliest 72 hours before arrival. Do it on your Wi-Fi at home, because without the confirmation border control can turn you away.

Why your home contract gets expensive in Thailand
Inside the EU you simply take your plan with you. Thailand is outside it, and that rule ends at the border. What your provider charges there is buried in the international roaming small print: either a day pass billed for every day of your trip that usually contains a thin data allowance, or, if you book nothing, a per-megabyte price that turns a single navigation session into the most expensive journey of the holiday.
There is a second point most people only notice at the airport. In Thailand daily life runs through apps, not through the reception desk. The driver calls you, the restaurant sends its menu over LINE, the boat transfer is confirmed by QR code, and at the market stall you hold up your phone to a code instead of cash. Rationing your data out of fear of the bill does not save money, it leaves you standing in Bangkok at night with no taxi. A line of your own with a Thai number costs something once and is then off your mind.
Where the networks actually reach
Since True and dtac merged, TrueMove H and DTAC are one network on shared towers. In Bangkok and east towards Pattaya, in Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Hua Hin and Hat Yai, 5G is the norm and 4G the fallback. On the big islands too – Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Chang, Koh Lanta – you are reliably online in the towns, on the beaches and at the piers, and across greater Bangkok including both airports without question.
It thins out as soon as you leave the coast. In Khao Sok National Park, on the mountain roads of the Mae Hong Son loop around Pai, inland on the islands and on small islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Lipe there are spots with no signal at all. On the ferries between Surat Thani and the islands the connection drops for stretches, and the same happens on the train towards Isaan and on long bus routes through the north. Download offline maps, tickets and the address of your accommodation beforehand. In Thailand that is not a workaround, it is normal preparation, and it applies to any SIM from any provider.

Les applis vraiment utiles en Thaïlande
Daily life in Thailand runs through a handful of apps you will not know from home. Uber is not there, the main messenger is not WhatsApp, and more and more places are paid by QR code. These six cover rides, food, public transport and payments. Install them before you fly while you still have Wi-Fi, and read the warnings in particular, because two of them need a Thai number.
Grab
Taxis, motorbike taxis, food delivery and courier runs in one app, and the replacement for Uber, which left Thailand in 2018. You can sign up with your normal number and pay in cash or with a foreign credit card.
No Grab on Koh Tao, Koh Lipe or the smaller islands. Grab is not permitted at Koh Samui airport, and at Phuket airport only from a dedicated pick-up point at the terminal.
LINE
The messenger everything runs on in Thailand: hotels, guesthouses, guides, restaurants and drivers give you a LINE ID instead of an email address. Without LINE, many small operators simply cannot reach you.
A LINE account is tied to one phone number. If you already use LINE, do not sign up again with the Thai number, or you start with an empty account and your old chats are gone.
LINE MAN
Food delivery from street stalls to restaurants, across all 77 provinces, so it reaches places where Grab gets thin. Menus can be shown in English and your messages to the driver are translated into Thai automatically.
The app sits in the Thai app store. If you cannot find it, you have to switch your store country to Thailand. Do not bother looking for Foodpanda, it left Thailand in May 2025.
ViaBus
Live tracking for buses, BTS, MRT, the Airport Link and ferries. You see on the map where your bus actually is instead of waiting at a stop with no timetable. Covers Bangkok plus Chiang Mai, Phuket, Udon Thani and other provinces.
Outside the larger cities there is barely any data. In rural areas songthaews run without a fixed schedule and appear in no app at all.
TrueMoney Wallet
The wallet for QR payments at stalls, cafés and small shops that do not take cards. You top it up with cash at any 7-Eleven.
Registration needs a Thai number, because the confirmation code arrives by SMS, and this eSIM gives you one.
